I’m a champion. I’m winning at life.I’ll do my best; ready to go in Christ!

I’m running ahead to bring good news,The news that God loves me and you. It’s an honor to run, I’m gonna run to win.Lord, guide my feet till I get to the end.

I’ve got my eyes on the prize and the prize is high;Beyond what I know, beyond the sky.Reaching for the goal, lifting as I climb;Don’t want nobody to get left behind.

Help me, Jesus, so I will not fallI’ll give the effort. You gave your all!You reached out to put me on higher ground.I once was lost but now I’m found!

I’m a champion. I’m winning at life.I’ll do my best; ready to go in Christ!

    Help me, Lord! Amen.

But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength;they will fly up on wings like eagles; they will run and not be tired; they will walk and not be weary. (Isaiah 40:31)

Bible and Background 1 Samuel 20:18-23, 35-41 – Jonathan protects his friend, David

King Saul orders his son Jonathan and all of his servants to kill David. But Jonathan is David’s friend. He warns David and gets Saul to rescind the order (1 Samuel 19:1-8). With David’s dominance in battle against the Philistines, Saul renews his efforts to kill him. Though it puts him in jeopardy, Jonathan promises to use his status to discover Saul’s intentions (20:4-17).Jonathan tells David not to come to the monthly celebration of the Festival of the New Moon (Numbers 28:11-15). Though David was supposed to attend the royal dinner, Jonathan tells him to hide. By the third day of the festival, Jonathan will use his archery skills to secretly send David a message. Shooting the arrow to one place will mean that David is safe; to another, will mean he must flee. David will know by hearing Jonathan’s instructions to the servant. These plans are an eternal testimony to God concerning their friendship and loyalty. At dinner, Saul gets so angry at David’s absence that he tries to kill Jonathan (20:32-33). The next morning, Jonathan and the boy go near David’s hiding place. Jonathan shoots an arrow beyond the servant boy’s reach. When the boy retrieves the arrow, Jonathan sends him back to

town. As soon as they are alone, David comes out of hiding and bows low to the ground three times to Jonathan. The friends kiss and cry.Known as the GOAT— Greatest Of All Time—Serena Williams has won more Grand Slam singles championships than anyone since 1968. She even made a comeback after complications of childbirth in 2017.*In the 2018 U.S. Open, after being penalized for reacting to referee calls, Williams lost to Naomi Osaka. Even as Osaka had used her skills and done her best to win the match, the crowd booed. Looking out for the good of this young tennis player, and using her status as the greatest athlete, Williams shushed the crowd and affirmed Osaka’s win. Osaka (whose Haitian father modeled Williams’ father, Richard Williams, in teaching her the game of tennis) then bowed to her childhood idol, Japanese style, and proudly accepted her win.*In 2018, a Vogue magazine article featured Serena Williams and illustrated that black women, no matter the socio-economic status, suffer more from the health risks that can come with childbirth, often due to racial bias among those who practice medicine.

Heritage Link• Comic Book Story #2 “BOLO (Be on the Look-

out!)” Champions in Life Comic Book, Vol. 2, pages 6-10; Also read-along video file

    • Look Out for Others story, (from page 15, Heritage/Drama/Games book.

Look Out for Others Have you ever seen a game of tennis? Two people use rackets to hit a ball back and forth over a net. Serena Williams is a tennis champion who has won many games for over 20 years. WOW! And in 2018, Naomi Osaka is a newcomer. You heard about both of them in the Bible story time. They often play against each other. At the 2018 US Open, they had a great tennis match!

Serena had won many big games, 23, and she was trying to get another one. But she lost the match! However, even in her loss, she was a champion because she showed the world how you’re supposed to look out for others. She stood up for Naomi, when others were being hurtful.

When people hurt your feelings, it is good when someone else bigger and stronger protects you, right? And that’s what happened! From the time Naomi was little, she looked up to Serena. She wanted to play tennis just like Serena. She worked hard and at this big game, she played against Serena and won.

But some people did not like it. They got mad and started to boo. The booing hurt Naomi and made her cry. But they were not booing Naomi. They were booing because they thought that the game had not been fair. Every game has rules with someone like a referee to make sure the players keep the rules. The people thought that the referee had been unfair to Ms. Williams.

Serena’s behavior showed us what we should do:• if we are disappointed.• if we think someone has been unfair to us.• if we lose the game.

Like our Memory Verse says, Instead of each person watching out for their own good, watch out for what is better for others (Philippians 2:4).

Serena looked out for Naomi. She made sure Naomi’s feelings didn’t get hurt anymore. That’s a sign of FRIENDSHIP. Serena was disappointed that she didn’t win, but she was more disappointed at the crowd, who booed instead of cheering for Naomi Osaka’s win.

What about you? How do you look out for friends, and your sisters and brothers when someone is mistreating them, when they are bullied?

Let’s learn a secret code* to let our friends know we are looking out for them. The words to our secret code are LOOK OUT FOR OTHERS.

    • For LOOK OUT, hand over eyebrows, like a visor.• For the word FOR, raise four fingers.• For OTHERS, point to someone.

Listen. Mychal and Debbie were best friends. They went to the playground. Jabari was there. Jabari loved to mess with Debbie, but Mychal was watching. When she ran to get the ball, Jabari ran after her. Debbie would have been scared but she saw Mychal doing the secret code.* She picked up the ball and walked right around Jabari, knowing that Mychal was looking out for her.

Here’s another story.DeMari forgot to clean the kitchen. There was no way he could finish before their mama got home. His brothers, DeQuan and DeShan, had looked in the door and seen him. They looked at each other and made the signal.* Then without saying a word, they started to help DeMari. When their mama got home, they were having fun. She started having fun right along with them! Soon the kitchen was clean and everyone was happy! Everyone wins when we look out for each other!

The Me, Myself, and I mentality is often perpetuated by capitalism, commercialism, and consumerism. Christian champions, however, exist within a community of faith and are our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers. Maybe this video can prompt ideas for how your family can look out for others.

Quick Tips for Parents #1 Model Friendship for Your Child!• Be more loyal to your child than to digital devices.

§ Avoid checking your phone or catching up on social media when you and your child are alone.

§ Set aside specific tech-free times, such as prayer time, mealtime, or during parent-child/family time activities.

    • Your children will learn more about friendship from the example you set than from anything you say to them about looking out for others. Your care for and loyalty to others offers the most powerful of lessons. Expect your children to do what you do, not what you tell them to do.

    • Being an example doesn’t have to be elaborate. Simple acts of kindness:§ Inviting a neighbor over for coffee.§ Taking food to a bereaved church member.§ Offering a neighbor a ride.

    • Prayer is one way to lovingly care. Rather than complaining about your friends, let your kids hear you speak to the Lord on their behalf. Invite them to join you in prayer on behalf of their friends.

    • Share memories about your childhood friendships.§ Highlight stories where you were helped by a

friend or when you were the helper. § Show pictures, videos, greeting cards, toys,

or souvenirs that bring back your cherished memories of those relationships.

§ Help them to know when you and the people in your life right now became friends.

    • Let your child see you use your skills and resources to benefit and support others.

    • Demonstrate how you use social media for the good of others. Share your social media pages with them and explain the values that guide you in selecting messages and photos to post.

    • Watch media with your child. When you see something in a television show, video, advertisement, or app that does not promote friendship, point it out and explain why.

  • 14

#2 Encourage Your Child to Be a Friend• Notice and affirm friendly behavior in your

child. Celebrate the times that they stand up for friends, show loyalty, or use their gifts and skills for the good of others. Encourage them to repeat the behavior.

    • Listen deeply when your child talks about what’s going on at school, youth group, children’s ministry, and so on.§ Pay attention to stories about children who are

left out, bullied—those who are different in some way from the majority. Encourage your child to find ways to show care for them.

§ Advise your child to report bullying or cyberbullying to an adult. Make sure the child knows that seeking help for a bullied child is not tattling, but is a way of showing loyalty and looking out for the safety of others.

CHAMPION’S MEALToday’s menu honors tennis champions Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka. Like Williams, Osaka learned tennis from her dad, Leonard Francois, who emulated Serena’s father, Richard Williams, in his teaching style and methods. With a skillfully-played game, Naomi Osaka won the 2018 US Open Tennis Championship. Afterwards, she wanted to eat chicken katsu with curry sauce and matcha ice cream, a Japanese flavor of ice cream—green tea and ginger. Serena Williams says her favorite meal is, “My mom’s chicken with rice and gravy. It was my favorite dish as a kid, and it still is now.” As a lean meat that provides protein, chicken is considered a power food. Broccoli and yogurt are considered to be super foods. Add yogurt treats and fruit as a snack or dessert and you have a meal for champions.

Ingredients (adjust according to your needs)• 1 can (10½ ounces) condensed cream

of broccoli soup• 1 box (14 ounces) uncooked long

grain white rice• large skinless, boneless chicken breast

    halves• 1 quarts water• 3 cups broccoli florets• 2 pinches paprika
