Downtown Lisle
Summer is finally here and we are enjoying outdoor activities once again. First I need to brag
a bit about my grandson Logan Althoff who entered the 26th Annual Lisle Woodridge Fire
Fighters Union Fishing Derby on Saturday May 24th. This community event was put on by
our member Fire Fighters Union and was held at Lisle Community Park. Prizes were
awarded for the largest fish in six categories of fish species. I am proud to say that Logan
caught the largest catfish of the day and overall the Biggest Fish of the Day! It was a five
pounder which was about a foot and a half long. The Fire Fighters Union did a great job in
coordinating the event and we thank them for providing a fun activity for our youth.
Lisle’s Memorial Day Parade and Picnic were held on May 26th. A major event of the Lisle VFW this year’s
Grand Marshall was Dennis Regan, a member of the Ross Bishop Post, former head of the St. Joan of Arc
Knights of Columbus and a Village of Lisle Community Service officer. Congratulations to this tremendous
community leader and honored veteran.
The picnic following the ceremony at the Lisle Cemetery was attended by a large group of parade attendees. I
want to thank the following chamber members for their generous donations for the picnic: John Morrell
Foods (Armour Eckrich), Family Video, Pizzeria Bombola, Fox Restaurant, Hilton Lisle/Naperville,
Jewel Foods, Sherwin Williams, The Nook, and Walgreens. There were an estimated 750 people who
enjoyed the free picnic. We also want to thank the Lisle Teens with Character for all of their help serving the
food. Lori and Bob Mandel were the on-site coordinators for set-up, serving, and cooking. Lori is with Lisle
Teens and Bob is with them, a member of the St. Joan Knights of Columbus, and a village trustee. Their
children are/were leaders in Lisle Teens and at Lisle High School. This is truly a family dedicated to
community service. Finally, the Lisle Woodridge Fire District was invaluable for the parade and picnic. The
picnic food was delivered and stored at Fire Station 51 on School St. and the newly hired fire personnel
delivered the picnic items to the museum campus and even cooked the sausages and hotdogs. I want to thank
them in particular for all they did.
On Saturday May 31st we had our first Cruise Night. The weather was gorgeous and we had a huge number of
cars (well over 100) and many visitors. Kitty Murphy of The Nook, Chair of the Downtown Business Council,
and Chair of our Board of Director’s did a great job in organizing the event. We also want to say thanks to Lee
Ernst of Remax for his continued sponsorship, as well as Rob Salerno of Evviva for always being there for
us. This year we also welcome Bill Kay Chevrolet as a presenting sponsor. We look forward to seeing their
new Corvette and Classic Car facility which they just opened in Downers Grove.
Congratulations to SEASPAR on the opening of their new special needs room at the Lisle Park District
Recreation Center. The establishment of the room was a joint effort between the Lisle Park District and
SEASPAR (South East Association of Special Parks and Recreation). Cathy Morava of SEASPAR
coordinated the entire project which is truly a “Wonder”. Congrats also to Dana Corporation on the award
they received from Giant Steps for financial and other support. Rich Kozerski, head of the Lisle facility
accepted the award.
June has some great opportunities ahead so check out LENG, the ribbon-cutting at Riedy’s Tee Time, the
workshop on Social Security presented by Valerie Janke, Waddell & Reed, Inc.,our Business after Hours at
the Museums of Lisle Station Park and Chamber night at the DuPage Hounds. Also please volunteer for
Eyes to the Skies (July3-5) for the Chamber. Just go to eyestotheskies.org and select your time and the
job. This is how we are able to provide multiple scholarships to graduating high school students
every year. Have a great June!

So, did any of you take my advice to get involved last month? Did you set a goal to
attend at least one event in May? Why, you ask? For YOUR sake! All the activities
this Chamber plans are with YOU in mind. They are all opportunities to network.
They are all designed with our members in mind.
What a fun month we have had, right up until the end on May 31st with our first 2014
Cruise Night Block Party. A beautiful evening, a huge turnout (biggest one yet), 2
Presenting Sponsors – Evviva & Bill Kay Chevrolet. Many Chamber businesses got
involved by setting up displays for their business during the event. Cost for that is only $50 – you
can’t go wrong! Lots of good business connections made between sponsor businesses and at-
tendees too!
All of the events hosted by the Chamber hold great potential for your business – and they are fun
gatherings! Here are a few opportunities for June. Put a couple of them on your calendar. Bring a
friend or coworker with you. Successful Chamber Members are Active Chamber Members:
June 5th Ribbon Cutting at Riedy’s Tee Time 5 p.m. (these are always fun!)
June 9th Cruise Night Plng Mtg, The Nook in Lisle 5p.m. (new members always welcome)
June 12th Charity Event at Evviva – (Mayor Broda is cooking for us.)
June 17th LENG Meeting at Wheatstack 5-6p.m. (come check it out)

June 19th DuPage Hounds Game, Benedictine University – 5 p.m.
June 28th Cruise Night/Block Party on Main Street – 6-10 p.m.
Your Chamber Board Members are hard at work behind the scenes as well. We are getting
involved on committees, attending events, and helping to implement some great ideas from our
Marketing Plan. Current activities include recruitment of a Junior Board (made up of College
Business Majors) to assist us with ideas and processes to improve our social media marketing. As
your governing board, responsible for the direction of our Chamber, we are also working on our
own job descriptions and key responsibilities to you, the members. Another summer endeavor will
be to draft and send out a member survey. We want to gather feedback on ways we can improve
YOUR experience as Chamber Members.
Great momentum going for 2014 – let’s capitalize on it!! Grow our business contacts, grow our
involvement, and grow our businesses -- together!! Have a great month!

The General Membership Luncheon took place on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at the Hilton Lisle/
Naperville. This was a particularly special event as we awarded $500 scholarships to the ten high
school students thoughtfully selected by our Scholarship Committee. Congratulations to our scholarship
recipients: Carrie Castenello, Jefferson Chan, Kevin Coppin, Sharad Crosby, Samaneh Ghassemi,
Melanie Holland, Valeria Melo, Scott Provenzano, Max Tarasewicz, and Andrew Trzeciak, we wish
you all the best of luck!!
This event also featured guest speaker, Dr. Cassandra Sheffield, who discussed the main types of social
media most prevalent today. She really emphasized the importance of determining the type of presence
you want to have in the social media world. Once you have an established purpose, you can focus your
efforts on the social media site(s) that will help you achieve your goal. All social media sites serve
different purposes, so instead of joining every site, determine which one best aligns with your goals and
develop your identity there. A crucial part of being in the social media world is making a point of
staying relevant. Make sure your information is current, and that you are regularly posting, tweeting or
updating your profile. For more information about this presentation, or to view Dr. Sheffield’s
PowerPoint, go to www.lislechamber.com.

Allison Cooper of Liberty Mutual Insurance has been in the industry for over six years,
beginning in college as an Agency Intern and continuing on as agent support staff before
becoming an agent in 2013. Her primary duties at Liberty Mutual include selling auto, home
and life insurance products while being very active in the community which allows her to
meet and connect with new people while assisting them with their insurance needs.
Allison has been a Lisle Area Chamber of Commerce member since December 2013, and
became an Ambassador in January 2014. She enjoys her time as an Ambassador because it has provided
her the opportunity to meet and welcome new members while also serving as their liaison for any
questions they may have as a new member.
Allison lives in Lisle with her spouse, two dogs, and a cat. She and her spouse are currently expecting
their first son at the end of this summer. She enjoys trying new restaurants and spending time with her
friends and family. She is a self-proclaimed sports fanatic and loves watching and attending as many
sporting events as possible, especially when it comes to the Green Bay Packers. Allison shares a favorite
quote, “Winning is a habit. Watch your thoughts, they become your beliefs. Watch your beliefs, they
become your words. Watch your words, they become your actions. Watch your actions, they become your
habits. Watch your habits, they become your character.” -Vince Lombardi

The Lisle Area Chamber held a New Member Orientation on
Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at the Hilton Lisle/Naperville. In
attendance were Board Members, Ambassadors, Chamber Chairs
and staff, as well as several of our new members. Tom Althoff
led the meeting and provided information about various
upcoming Chamber events. Each Committee Chair spoke about
their committee and the importance of getting involved in order
to reap as many benefits as possible from Chamber membership.
The Ambassadors discussed how their participation provides
them numerous opportunities to meet with new members and act
as a mentor, providing assistance to them as needed. Whether you attend Chamber events, or become
involved in a committee or as an Ambassador, active involvement in the Chamber presents many
opportunities to learn about local businesses, showcase your own business and develop relationships
with various members of the business community.
