Social Media – What’s all the fuss about? The Facts and Figures Important to Your Business Today
Kelli C. McLaughlin Communications Professional and Owner iGrow
What Does the Term “Social Media” Mean Exactly??
In Plain English….
Keep it in Perspective – when compared to Traditional Media
“Traditional” Media
“Traditional Media” is a one way instrument of
communication
Content is
Educational
Informative
Entertaining
Advertisers “place” their message around
the type and style of content their target
consumer is most likely to be frequenting
Limited opportunity for consumers to “react”
immediately and directly to the content.
“Social Media”
Also an instrument of communication.
A means to develop a relationship.
A two-way street that validates the customer
relationship and builds loyalty!
It’s another way to build the relationship….
Improve WOM, increase customer service and
encourage repeat customers
Give your audience an opportunity to be involved in content creation, along
side your brand –.
Keep YOUR content Educational, Informative
Entertaining!!
“Social” Media
Another way to communicate – and so much more!
Wait!!... Do not abandon your traditional media!!
People still watch TV
People still listen to the radio
People can respond to a billboard or OOH advertising
People still get print magazines
People still respond to in-store POS displays
And yes… people still read the local paper
It’s still about finding the right “mix” for reaching your TARGET and accomplishing a MARKETING OBJECTIVE!
Use the traditional as a means to raise awareness for your social activity
Think Integration!
Then why is “Social Media” causing such a fuss?
It took 38 years for radio to attract 50 million listeners.
13 years for television to attract 50 million viewers.
It took from Feb 2004 till October 2007, just over 4
years for Facebook to reach 50 million worldwide users
Facebook currently has more than 400 million active users
100 million active users currently accessing Facebook through their mobile devices
The answer is a resounding, YES!!

YouTube
•Right now it’s about building relationships, getting the customer to move because of the value!!
NOT selling...
What value is your content providing?
Education, Information or Entertainment??
BROADCASTING JUNK!!
It’s not enough to simply have a presence…
Have a plan to interact…
But I’m a local small business – this doesn’t really apply to me…
Really…
