Business owners and staff strive for successful networking within the Chamber environment with the goal of increasing their business. There are many different ways to do this and suggestions were published in a recent edition of the National Chamber Review as follows:

Go to a chamber luncheon Introduce yourself to a few people Take a few business cards—if someone asks, give them one while asking for theirs but don’t

pitch. Ask people what they do and inquire how they got into that line of work—let your new

acquaintances do most, if not all, of the talking. Listen for ways you might be able to help them. Build a relationship—you are planting seeds today, not reaping.

Exciting News From Springhill Suites

Springhill Suites by Marriott in Burr Ridge just began a full-scale renovation! Slated to be completed in late February 2015, all of the hotel, from the meeting space to the Market to the guest suites will have a new look. The hotel will still be an all-suites, entirely non-smoking place and still feature a Market, business center, fitness center and indoor pool. As always, a hot breakfast, wireless internet and parking will still be included in the rates. Also, Springhill Suites is sponsoring “SaveArt Promotion”. They are currently accepting donations towards supplying Taylor Park Elementary School in Freeport, Illinois, with art supplies so they can continue to be inspired and inspire. Who knows, we could be helping along the next Picasso! Please contact Springhill Suites if you are interested in making a donation. Lastly, Abigail Nelson, Director of Sales and Marketing, will be relocating Indianapolis at the end of December. The person who replaces her will have big shoes to fill!

National Do Not Call Lists for Cell Phones

Did you know that Cell Phone Numbers have gone public? All cell phone numbers have been released in October to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sales calls that YOU will be charged for. To prevent these calls, you need to call the National Do Not Call list at (888)382-1222 and register your cell phone number. You need to call the number from the cell phone you are registering in order for it to work. This will block your cell phone number from telemarketing companies for five (5) years. It is quick, easy and will help you avoid those annoying telemarketing sales calls on your cell phone.

DuPage County – 175th Anniversary In celebration of the 175th anniversary of the founding of DuPage County in Illinois, the DuPage Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) is conducting a photo contest on the county’s behalf through the end of the year. The contest will be held entirely on social media—specifically Instagram and Twitter—and will run through December 31st. An entry must be either a historical or current photographic image taken in DuPage County. The person submitting the image must be at least 21 y ears old and legal ownership or or proof of permission by the owner to use the photo. Hinsdale South HS Food Drive

Once again, the generosity of our Chamber members added 48 lbs of food to the Hinsdale South Food Drive. Collected items are distributed to local food pantries.

Clothing Drive

On December 5th, FAI (Fauske & Associates) and Friends of FAI will be having a Clothing Drive for the students at the Alaine Locke Charter Academy. This is an amazing school in East Garfield Park, Chicago. They are in the need of cold weather gear for the younger students (Pre-K to 4th grade). We are looking for new or gently used (clean) coats, snow pants, boots, fleece, scarves, hats and mittens. Please drop off any items you wish to donate at Fauske & Associates, 16W070 83rd Street, Burr Ridge, on Friday, December 5th between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm. Thanks and Happy Holidays!

VILLAGE OF BURR RIDGE

Filing Deadline for Village Election The election of three Burr Ridge Trustees to serve four-year terms on the Board will be on April 7, 2015 ballot. Village Clerk Karen Thomas reminds residents that the filing period for candidacy petitions is between 8:00 a.m. on December 15, 2014 and 5:00 p.m. on December 22, 2014 at the Burr Ridge Village Hall, 7660 County Line Road, Burr Ridge, Illinois. Required material and information on the number of signatures required to place a candidate’s name on the ballot are available from the Village Clerk between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at the Village Hall, Monday through Friday. County Line Road Bridge Construction Process Continues Lanes on either side of the bridge will be closed and subject to change as they progress. Please slow down through these areas, especially when merging traffic from I-55 is present. Be ssafe! Governor Signs Two Important Bills for Municipalities The bill Governor Quinn signed is House Bill 961 which requires that the local share of State collected income tax revenue be transferred to the Local Government Distributive Fund within 60 days of it being certified. This bill will guarantee the prompt transfer of revenues to local governments.

The second is House Bill 3885, which permits the Department of Revenue to furnish sales tax information for individual businesses to all municipalities, if the municipalities agree in writing to the Act’s confidentiality provisions. In the past, this information was only provided to municipalities with a local municipal sales tax. The Village does have a 1-1/4% local municipal sales tax; therefore, Burr Ridge was able to sign this confidentiality agreement last year. VILLAGE OF WILLOWBROOK

Village Board Openings

There are several Willowbrook Board positions to be filled at the April 7, 2015 Consolidated Election as follows: (3) Village Trustees for 4-year term. Please be advised that the filing period for the April 7,2015 Consolidated Election is December 15, 2014 at 8:30 a.m. through December 22, 2014, at 5:00 p.m. Petition packets are available at the Village Hall. Village Appoints New Trustee Due to the recent resignation of Trustee Dennis Baker, the Village Board appointed Willowbrook resident, Gayle Neal to fill the vacancy at its October 13th meeting. The Chamber expresses its best wishes and thank you to Dennis Baker for his many years of service to the Village of Willowbrook. The Chamber also extends its congratulations and best wishes to Gayle Neal on her recent appointment. DuPage County Route 66 Icon a ‘Delicious Destination’ The Illinois Office of Tourism and DuPage Convention & Visitors Bureau recently announced Chamber member, Dell Rhea’s Chicken Basket, located in Willowbrook, is a recipient of an “Enjoy Illinois: Delicious Destination” award, which honors local food establishments around the state that are beloved destinations for visitors and locals alike. Dell Rhea’s is among a select group of Illinois establishments to receive the designation from the tourism bureau. Dell Rhea’s Chicken Basket opened in the summer of 1946 on Historic Illinois Route 66. Illinois is the only Route 66 state east of the Mississippi. Congratulations on this well-deserved award!

2014 Giving Tree Program Nancy DeYoung (De Young’s Insurance Service) will serve as chair of the Giving Tree Program spon-sored by the Willowbrook/Burr Ridge Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Women In Business.

Plans are underway to begin our Giving Tree program that helps numerous charitable organizations in our local area. In case you are not familiar with this program, which is in its 10th year, please read the simple explanation that follows. Christmas trees are put up in community centers and local businesses throughout our area. These host businesses are listed with their addresses so you can go to the one nearest your home. The ornaments have items listed that the charitable organizations are in need of and are wishing for this holiday season. You only have to go and choose an ornament, shop for the item(s) listed on the ornament, then bring it back unwrapped with the ornament attached. The Giving Trees will be up at their locations on Monday, December 1 and will stay up until December 24.
