centralized location and easy access provided by two major

Interstate systems (Interstates 235 and 80) and several main

Sam Thomasson describes the day his daughter Kate was born as the happiest of his life. However, when Kate was

a toddler she lost most of her hearing due to a sudden illness. Through the years, it became clear that the costly

traditional aids that were fitted for Kate were ineffective, causing discomfort as well as affecting her speech

development. Like other fathers, Sam Thomasson would do anything for his daughter. Sam set out

to completely redesign hearing aids, using Kate’s experiences as his guide. As an accomplished

electrical engineer who had worked on a wide array of products from computer chips to pace-

makers, Sam began pouring over design specifications of the leading hearing aids, determined

to find the aids that would solve Kate’s hearing problem. He installed an electronics lab in

their home and worked nights and weekends – with Kate often at his side – developing

new hearing technology. To date, Sam and his team of dedicated engineers have amassed

57 ground-breaking patents with technology that can only be found in Zounds products.

You’re going to like it here.As the ninth largest district in the state, the West Des Moines Community Schools serve more than 55,000 residents in the western portion of Polk County. The district serves more than 1,500 students living within the city of Clive. These students attend one of the following schools: Clive Elementary, Crestview Elementary, Crossroads Park Elementary, Indian Hills Junior High, Valley Southwoods Freshman High School or Valley High School.

Two of those schools–Crestview Elementary and Indian Hills Junior High–are located with the Clive city limits and have experienced major renovation projects over the past few years. A newly remodeled Crestview Elementary reopened in August of 2010 to 525 students in prekindergarten through sixth grade and 62 staff members.

Indian Hills Junior High, has 80 staff members serving 680 students. During the summer of 2009, the school also completed a massive remodeling project within the three-month summer break providing students with an updated, modern interior design.

WDMCS Community Education is the outreach department of the WDMCS. We provide opportunities for learning, service, and fun to people of all ages. We look to serve the needs of our community by connecting people, ideas, and resources.

Public art plays a significant role within a community. It

encourages civic pride, adds artistic distinction to important areas

within the community and enhances the aesthetic education and

appreciation of both residents and visitors.

To support this vision, the Clive Public Art Program and Public

Arts Advisory Commission were established in 2007. Some of the

current pieces include:

WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT CLIVE by Sarah Grant is located at

the Franklin Avenue crossing guard/bus shelter on N.W. 86th

Street. The initial commissioned piece is a collage based on

drawings by area school children which represent what they

“love about Clive.” The colorful display is assisting the Public

Art Program raise money for future pieces of artwork by

selling individual scenes on hand-crafted wooden tiles made

by artist Sarah Grant and her Sticks gallery.

PRAIRIE ENGINE by artist Marc Moulton is located in

Aasheim Plaza at the corner of N.W. 86th Street and University

Boulevard. A contemporary artwork, the piece represents the

important role the railroad and historic depot played in Clive’s

early history and incorporates aspects of the prairie in a nod to

the community’s environmental origin.

BLACK DIAMOND by Rebecca Ekstrand and Tom Rosborough

is located at Shuler Elementary near

Douglas and Berkshire Parkways.

This piece honors the history of the

Shuler Coal Mines and the memory

of the miners and their families who

established a community around the

mine.

The Art Along the Trail Exhibit

is held annually on six locations

along the Clive Greenbelt Trail from

May to September and features

works from Iowa artists. At the

end of each exhibit season the

City selects one of the works to

purchase for the Clive public art

collection. The exhibit program is supported by a grant from

BRAVO of Greater Des Moines.

PATHS UNITE by James Bearden is located adjacent to NW

114th Street on the Clive City Hall/Library property. This piece

was selected as the 2012 Art Along the Trail Exhibit winner.

HOPE by Hilde DeBruyne is located along 86th Street just

north of the Walnut Creek Bridge. This piece was selected as

the 2013 Art Along the Trail Exhibit winner.

A number of active civic organizations are based in Clive.

These organizations offer Clive residents the opportunity

to volunteer their time and talents and actively engage in

building a stronger community through their service.

Clive Chamber of Commerce: The Clive Chamber of

Commerce is focused on offering services and benefits

ribbon cuttings for new businesses, monthly networking

organization for young professionals in the greater

Clive Festival: The Clive Festival Committee has provided

an affordable community outdoor festival for more than

35 years. Led by a group of local volunteers, the event

has evolved into a two-day festival offering food, live

Clive Historical Society: The members of the Clive

Historical Society work to make a difference within their

community by preserving local historical landmarks,

sharing our history with students and adults, hosting

open house events and welcoming tourists and visitors.

artifacts and photos as well as financial contributions. To

Clive Lions Club: The Clive Lions Club has served the

local community since 1977. Dedicated to leadership

development through community service and following

their motto of “We Serve,” the Clive Lions Club sponsors

Scout Packs, conducts annual holiday food drives and

donates bikes to the Variety Club Bikes for Kids. The group

also holds an Annual Banquet in which they honor the

Clive Running Festival: The Clive Running Festival has

been taking place for more than 25 years providing

some of the most scenic and challenging courses in

the metro area. Traveling through local neighborhoods

and the Clive Greenbelt Trail, the organization uses the

Friends of the Library: The Clive Library is one of the

community’s strongest assets, highly utilized by both

local and numerous Des Moines metro area residents.

Clive’s tagline “Distinct by Nature” is truly accurate when

discussing the community’s many parks, green spaces and

the exceptional Clive Greenbelt Trail system. Twenty parks

are located within Clive’s city limits totaling nearly 450 acres

and 19 miles of multi-purpose recreational trails. The trails

are open year-round and provide a beautiful backdrop to

enjoy biking, running, walking, snowshoeing, cross country

skiing or rollerblading. The trails also offer a close up view of

Clive’s striking natural scenery and wide variety of wildlife.

The parks provide residents and visitors the opportunity

to participate in a number of activities including softball,

baseball, soccer, tennis, sand volleyball and basketball. For

those seeking a great spot to picnic and play, several parks

include open air shelters, grills and picnic tables as well as

updated playground areas.

The jewel of the Clive parks and trail system is the

exceptional Clive Greenbelt Trail. Adjacent to Walnut Creek,

a historical centerpiece for Clive, the trail is considered by

many as an iconic landmark. Dedicated in 1960, the Clive

Greenbelt Trail is home to the annual Clive Running Festival

and the annual Art Along the Trail Exhibit and is easily

accessible through a number of trailheads throughout

the local neighborhoods. The Greenbelt Trail connects to

several well-know, area trails including the 57-mile Raccoon

River Trail to the west, the Jordan Creek and Bill Riley Trails

to the east and the Urbandale trail system to the north.

The City of Clive was officially incorporated on Oct. 9,

1956, yet it shares a rich history and strong ties to the

area dating back to the 1870s when maps show Clive as

a small settlement clustered around the intersection of

the Walnut Creek, a railroad and a county road. The land

was originally platted on Jan. 18, 1882, by the Union Land

Company. This is the same year the railroad and Railway

Depot were built. The railroad played a vital role in Clive’s

growth as the community was a main shipping point

for the railroad and a coal mining area. It also brought

a wide range of visitors into Clive to use the post office,

blacksmith and other small businesses. Later on, the

railroad expanded west to Omaha, serving as a shipping

destination for the local farmers’ cattle.

As the city developed and grew into a marketplace

in the early 1900s, it included the Ravenwood School

and Swanson Grocery Store, which still stands on its

original foundation near the corner of N.W. 86th Street

and Swanson Boulevard. The store served as the city’s

main mercantile and post office from 1911-1929. In

1992, the store was left to the City of Clive following the

passing of Mildred Swanson, a daughter of the store’s

owner. Swanson held a high regard for Clive’s history and

wanted to ensure the preservation of her family’s store to

teach future generations about the community’s roots.

The land has been turned into a pocket park managed

by the City of Clive, and the Swanson store has carefully

been returned to its original format as depicted in 1915

photographs by the Clive Historical Society. The Clive

Depot and red caboose were donated and have been

moved behind the Swanson House to serve as a reminder

of Clive’s rich railroad heritage.

The northwest corner of Clive’s city limits holds another

key to Clive’s history. The Shuler Mining area was all

but forgotten until the recent construction of Shuler

Elementary School off of Douglas Parkway. During

discussions and research into a name for the new school,

volunteers and city leaders “unearthed” the rich traditions

and ties many area families have to the mine created by

the Shuler Coal Company in 1921. The mine employed

more than 450 miners whose families lived in camps

surrounding this area during the peak production era.

The miners’ children and grandchildren are proud to

share the stories of the mines and their camps and the

strong bonds the families have to the area.

Although Clive has grown into a thriving metropolitan

city of more than 15,000, the community remains

extremely proud of its rich history. We extend an

enthusiastic invitation to residents and visitors alike to

visit the Swanson House and Clive Depot to take a step

back in time and rediscover why Clive is a truly “distinct”

community!

Garbage, Recycling, Yard Waste Disposal

The City of Clive contracts with Waste Management of

Iowa for solid waste, recycling and yard waste disposal

services. For the weekly garbage pickup service schedule

in your neighborhood, contact Waste Management of

Iowa. Garbage and recycling billing is included on your

monthly water bill and residents should contact the Clive

Water Dept. to begin service.

Recycling carts are emptied every other week. Please

refer to the sticker on the lid for your pick up schedule. If

your pick up is missed, please call Waste Management of

Iowa.

The City of Clive also participates in the Compost It!

Program for yard waste disposal. Yard waste is collected

in Compost It! Bags or “Kraft-style” bags with a Compost

It! Sticker attached. Twigs and branches must be bundled

with a Compost It! Sticker attached. Bags. Stickers can

be purchased at City Hall. Bags and stickers can be

purchased at Dahl’s and Hy-Vee. Residents may also

participate in the Premium Yard Waste Program, utilizing

a toter for yard waste disposal. Contact City Hall for

details. Compost It! Pickup is on the same day as garbage

pickup. If your pickup is missed, please call Waste

Dog and Cat Licenses

Clive is a WestPet partner community with Urbandale and

West Des Moines for the purposes of animal control and

pet licensing. All dogs and cats six months of age or older

in Clive must have a WestPet license. A license application

can be obtained from www.cityofclive.com or from Clive

City Hall. License renewals are accepted Jan. 1 - April 30

each year without penalty. On or after May 1, a $25 per

pet late fee will be applied. Licenses purchased for newly-

acquired pets or for the pets of new residents are not

subject to late fees if purchased within 30 days. Licenses

must be submitted with a copy of rabies certificate and

proof of spay/neuter if applicable.

City Government Information

Clive is governed by the Clive City Council that consists of

a mayor and five city council members elected at-large.

The City Council meets in the evenings on the first,

third and fifth Thursday of each month in the Council

Chambers at City Hall, 1900 N.W. 114th St.

City Boards and Commissions

The Mayor and City Council have the authority to appoint

Clive citizens to city boards and commissions. Board and

commission members advise and make recommendations

to the City Council on specific policy issues.

Board of Adjustment

Meets on the third Tuesday of each month as needed at

6:30 p.m. in the Clive City Council Chambers 1900 N.W.

114th St.

Building Code Board of Appeals and Fire Code Board

of Appeals

Meets as required to determine appeals from applicable

staff interpretation of the Building or Fire Codes.

Civil Service Commission

Meets as needed to develop eligibility lists or hear

appeals on personnel-related police matters.

Meets on the third Monday of each month at 6 p.m. in the
