The Johnston Chamber of Commerce strives to provide a forum for

group advocacy, collaboration and shared learning to help our area busi-

nesses prosper. Our mission is to focus on advancing our economic suc-

cess and support the development of the community.

The Chamber has been consistently striving to be the voice for the

business community and will continue to do so. We remain commit-

this through events and year-long activities such as monthly luncheons,

breakfast before business, business after hours and education seminars.

With a bright future in front of us, it is important to continue the

momentum of growth and by having an active membership that is

Member Success – Organizes activities designed to help our business members succeed and grow in the Johnston community. We offer professional development and networking activities through workshops, lunch and learn events and other activities to help our members achieve their business goals.

Communications – We are working to strengthen communications among our members and the community. This will be accomplished through improvements in our website, advertising for Green Days, expanded information in our monthly newsletter and the creation of new channels of communications. Living × Learning × Growing.

These three words were selected as Johnston’s motto a decade ago

to describe our community, and they are as relevant today as

they were when they were first chosen.

As a community, Johnston continues to grow at an extraordinary pace.

The number of Johnston residents doubled in the 10 years extending

from 2000 to 2010. The most recent census put our population at more

than 17,000, making us the 24th largest city in Iowa and the fifth largest in

the Des Moines metropolitan area.

Many factors have contributed to our growth — our world-class

schools, our outstanding employers and our high quality of life, to name

just a few. In 2010, the National Teacher of the Year was an English

teacher in the Johnston School District named Sara Brown Wessling. In

2011, Johnston was recognized as the 13th best place in America to live by

CNN Money Magazine. Global businesses, like DuPont Pioneer and John

Deere Financial Services, literally have the entire world to locate and yet

they stay right here in Johnston to take advantage of our skilled workforce

and favorable business climate.

Across the country, the economic recovery has been slow, but in

Johnston business growth and development remains strong. We set a new

record in commercial development in 2011 with more than $56 million

in new construction. And while we did not beat the record again in 2012,

we experienced new commercial development exceeding $26 million last

year, an amount that is impressive by any measure.

As Johnston continues to grow, so does the need for improved services.

We’ve started construction on a new Public Safety Building on Merle Hay

Road that will serve as the main facility for Johnston’s Police and Fire

Departments. It will take about 18 months to complete the building, and

it is expected to open in February 2014. We just completed construction

of a second fire station on Johnston’s west side. Once staffed and fully

operational, the two new facilities will significantly enhance the ability of

our police and firefighters to protect our residents and businesses and to

respond to emergency calls.

Major road improvements also have been completed recently. Perhaps

the most talked about is the reconstruction of N.W. 62nd Avenue with its

four roundabouts that are designed to keep the traffic moving at all times

and are much safer than traffic lights. Also recreational opportunities

continue to be a priority as planning is underway to develop the area

around Terra Lake as a regional park and to add to the 30-plus miles of

trails in Johnston with a major extension along N.W. Beaver Drive.

Even though Johnston as a community has gotten bigger, it has

retained many of the good qualities of a small town. Our streets and

schools are safe. Our neighborhoods are strong. It’s a place where the

people know and care about the children and families living next door

Johnston is governed by the Johnston City Council, which consists of a mayor and five city council members elected at-large. The City Council meets for a regular meeting on the first and third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at Johnston City Hall, 6221 Merle Hay Road. Usually, a work session is held at 6 p.m., prior to the regular council meeting, for members to receive information and discuss city programs and operations in greater depth. City Parks and FacilitiesThe City of Johnston Parks maintains 14 beautiful parks and facilities,

including the 156-acre Beaver Creek Natural Resource Area. Nearly 30

miles of interconnected recreational trails provide additional outdoor

opportunities for Johnston residents. City facilities are available for rent

through the parks department. They include:

Simpson Barn: The fully-restored barn can accommodate up to 200

people and has a full kitchen in the lower level. Simpson Barn is located

at 6169 Northglenn Drive. (Please note, the upper level of the barn is

not climate controlled and may require fans (provided) or heaters (not

provided) depending on the weather.)

Crown Point Community Center: The remodeled center can

accommodate 180 people for special events and has a full kitchen. Crown

Point is located at 6300 Pioneer Parkway.

Dewey Park Shelters: Two picnic shelters are available for reservation

at Dewey Park, NW 64th Place.

The Johnston Green Days festival will celebrate its 17th anniversary with a weekend full of

activities starting on Thursday, June 13. Highlights include a carnival, parade, live bands,

beer garden, free family movie, free balloon artist and crafts for the kids, Bill Riley Talent

Search and much more. Green Days is organized by the Johnston Chamber of Commerce.

Why is it called Green Days? When the event was started in 1996, it focused on Johnston’s

agricultural and horticultural tradition. The Chamber worked with Johnston’s many nursery and

greenhouse operations, local garden clubs and other groups, to start this tradition — and helped

it grow to be one of Iowa’s leading summer festivals.

It is a community celebration for Johnston residents and a showcase of our city for the many

On behalf of the teachers and staff in the Johnston Community

School District, I’d like to welcome you to our community. In

Johnston, we enjoy the best of both worlds, having amenities

of a larger metro area nearby, while maintaining a close-knit community

within our city.

For the past 98 years, Johnston schools have been an integral part of

the community. Our dedicated faculty members take pride in teaching

the latest in 21st century curriculum and meeting the rigorous standards

defined by the Iowa Core. Our programs have received national, state

and regional attention for their effectiveness, which is a result of superior

instruction, motivated students, encouraging parents and a supportive

community committed to quality education.

Our district has accomplished some great things during the past year:

Johnston was named to the AP Honor Roll for the first time in school

history; six students were named National Merit Semifinalists; all fall

athletic teams qualified for the state meets or competitions; two students

were named Herbert Hoover Uncommon Students; and our music

department had a strong statewide showing in All-State band, orchestra,

choir and marching band competitions. We should all be proud of the

accomplishments of our students and staff.

These successes are fueled by the quality of students we attract at

Johnston. Over the past five years, the district has experienced an annual

average growth rate between 1 and 4 percent. The district’s budget,

facilities, staffing and programs and services are all greatly affected by

student enrollment. Total district enrollment is expected to show steady

growth as the economy, housing market and employment opportunities

improve in Johnston. With this growth comes the ability to provide new

facilities in a safe, clean and modern learning environment. Johnston

educators are committed to giving students the best in education so they

may reach scholastic, professional and civic goals.

We feel the next few years are going to be some of the best for Johnston

schools. In June, we will present a bond referendum to the patrons of the

Johnston Community School District that would fund the construction

of a new 10-12 high school, alleviating overcrowding and facility issues at

the current school. The bond dollars would also assist in a number of other

facility projects at the current middle school and Wallace Elementary. The

Board of Education and I feel that these projects enhance the quality of

education we can bring to current and future Johnston students.

The Johnston Community School District plays a significant role in the

growth and development of our community. The Board of Education and

district administration are committed to working together with civic and

business leaders, parents, district patrons and others to ensure a world-

class education for each and every student.

Johnston Community School District Mission Statement

Schools

Johnston Community School District serves approximately 6,600 students, grades pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The dis-trict has seen increasing enrollments each year since 1984, for a yearly growth average of 1 to 4 percent. The district is composed of five preK-5 elementary schools, one 6-7 middle school, one 8-9 middle school, one 10-12 high school, and one 9-12 alternative high school, shared with surrounding metro schools. Elementary class sizes average 20-26 students, while secondary class sizes average 25-27 students. JCSD is the 14th largest school district in Iowa, with an annual budget of $62.8 mil-lion. The district covers a 40 square mile area, and serves families from Johnston, and parts of Urbandale, Des Moines, Grimes and Granger. Johnston Community School District is the fourth-largest employer in Johnston, with approximately 1,000 employees, 464 of them teachers.
