Byrnes Health Education Center Celebrates Milestoneby Alexis Pacchiana, Chamber InternThe Byrnes Health Education Center celebrates a major milestone with its 20th anniversary in 2015.

When it first opened in 1995, the center only had two theaters. They have since expanded to five theaters and two delivery platforms, where they deliver uniquely rich health education.

“In these twenty years, we have erased all geographic boundaries and launched our first app, healthy4me,” said Anne Bahn, President of the Byrnes Health Education Center.

“Within this time, we have delivered over 7 million health education lessons.”

The Center has a robust partnership with the Hanover Public School District (HPSD), including an endowment for its benefit. The endowment allows for the cost of health education programming at HPSD to be fully funded annually. Last year, health educators from the Byrnes Health education center delivered 27 programs district-wide, and the schedule for 2015 is equally as full-bodied.

“Our team uses pre and post testing to measure knowledge gain and behavioral intent due to our award-winning, creative, cross-curricular, standards-based curriculum,” said Alexandra Affigne, Development Officer.

“We know first-hand the impact our health education has on the community, as well as the importance of offering high-quality health education programming early in life.”

Artwork Installed DowntownMain Street Hanover has commissioned local artist Jeff Aspers of Tossed and Found Art for the first public art sculpture, which was installed before the holidays in the Baltimore Street parking lot beside Club 2000. The concept for this initial art piece is an infinity sign, representing downtown Hanover’s boundless potential and made of a metal frame with interior components consisting of re-purposed items from Hanover’s agricultural and the industrial roots.

“When asked to create an art piece that symbolizes the agricultural and industrial heritage of Hanover, I envisioned [this piece],” said Aspers.

“Where one side flows from industrial to agricultural and every piece is holding the other together; they support each other. Without one, there is an imbalance, and Hanover has a rich history in both providing an underlying strength throughout the community. I have really enjoyed learning more about the people and the town as I created this; piece by piece, smaller stories are combined into a larger unified one. Thank you for stopping and sharing.”

This initial public art piece was made possible through grants received from the York County Community Foundation and PNC Bank. The piece will be officially dedicated in the spring.

Support MSH at Mardi GrasThe second-annual Mardi Gras Gala will be held on Sat., Feb. 21 in a secret downtown location. Proceeds from the event will support Main Street Hanover. Join fellow MSH supporters downtown for an evening of good food, fun games, and exciting entertainment.

Tickets can be purchased through the Chamber website at www.hanoverchamber.com/mardi-gras, or by calling the Chamber office.

Can’t attend? You can still support Main Street with a general contribution. Please see donation information below, or contact Justine Kilkelly, Manager, MSH, at [email protected].
