More than fifty years ago, the Canton community
came together to build Roaring Brook Nature Center. Since that time, hundreds of thousands of area children and families have visited the Nature Center to learn about local wildlife, habitats, and the environment. Some of those original supporters with their grandchildren are still visiting! Over the past few months, a new generation of supporters have rebuilt the Nature Center to ensure that it will remain a vital component of the community for the next fifty years. The size of the previous building limited Roaring Brook’s ability to meet demands for the activities they provide including field trips, outreaches, and a wide variety of other programs

to communities and schools throughout the state. Additionally, the Nature Center rescues and rehabilitates injured or orphaned wild animals that are brought to their doors by area residents – just last year they took in almost 400 such animals. Each year, there are fewer facilities that provide this vital service and the Nature Center is likely to face increasing demand to provide such wildlife care in years to come. While the past decade has seen many changes and upgrades to the Nature Center, it was time for a major expansion of the facilities. The newly completed renovations and additions will allow the Nature Center to meet these needs and more.
This barred owl named Harriet was rehabilitated at Roaring Brook Nature Center after being hit by a car. Once she demonstrated she could catch prey again, she was released to the wild.

A Bigger, Better Roaring Brook Nature Center, continued from cover
Renovations include:
• New and improved enclosures for wildlife providing improved viewing of resident birds;
• A state-of-the-art wildlife rehabilitation facility for improved treatment, rehabilitation and return of injured animals to the wild;
• Expansion of existing exhibit areas and educational programs;
• A new lobby designed for visitors and groups to gather before attending programs or touring exhibits.

With the generous help of supporters and friends, Roaring Brook reached and exceeded their initial financial targets. There remains, however, a bit more work to do and Roaring Brook continues to seek donors and volunteers interested in preserving wildlife and the environment to continue their mission.
A grand opening of the improved center is schedule on Earth Day, Sunday April 22.
