Chamber Volunteer of the Quarter Convention & Visitor Council Salutes Daphne Adkins By: Eric Miller, CVC Director of Communications In the last 20 years perhaps no person in Amarillo has wel-comed more people to town than Amarillo-native Daphne Adkins. It’s been both her vocation and avocation. And because of that personal dedication, she has been named the Volunteer of the Quarter by the Amarillo Chamber Of Commerce and Amarillo Convention & Visitor Council and was recognized with three other Amarillo residents as the top volunteers for the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce in 2009. “We think of her as an extension of our CVC staff. Whenever we have a question or come across a new issue, a staff member always says to call Daphne and get her take on the situation. Her experience in the tourism industry is a great asset for our city,” Jerry Holt, Vice President of the Amarillo Convention & Visitor Council, says. She is a member of the Amarillo Convention & Visitor Council board and has attended meetings of the Amarillo CVC’s Con-vention & Tourism Committee for many years. And she is a past board member of the Texas Travel Industry Association and the Texas Department of Economic Development Tour-ism Advisory Committee. She has been showing off her hometown, to friends and visi-tors alike, for more than 20 years. She started her tourism career in the local hotel industry. In 1991 she formed Daphne’s Tour & Travel, a tour company that works with do-mestic and international groups visiting Amarillo. Through this work, she has welcomed thousands of people to Ama-rillo. Since 2007 she has supervised the Texas Travel Information Center on Interstate 40 East at Airport Blvd. The Amarillo TIC, which is part of the Texas Department of Transporta-tion’s statewide network of 12 information centers, handled questions from more than 90,000 travelers last year. “With her upbeat attitude and willingness to bend over back-wards to assist travelers, she is the perfect person to be an ambassador for Amarillo and for Texas,” Brenda Harper, Director, Travel Information Divi-sion of the Texas De-partment of Transporta-tion, says.
