Overview

Introduction► Chamarajanagar is the southernmost

district of Karnataka, situated at a distance

of 185 km from Bangalore

► Divided into 4 administrative divisions-

Chamarajanagar, Gundlupet, Kollegal and

Yelandur

► Has vast reserves of black granite

► Agriculture is the backbone of the economy

with the net sown area being 1.75 lakh

hectare

► Sericulture is a traditional activity in the

district

► Suitable for inland fishing, particularly in

the ornamental fish segment

Chamarajanagar was named after Chamaraja Wodeyar, the Wodeyar king of Mysooru,who was born here. The Vijaya Parsvanath Basadi, a holy Jain shrine was constructedby Punisadandanayaka, the commander of the Hoysala king Gangaraja in the year1117 AD. Chamarajanagar has been carved out from the Mysore district in the year1998 . It s the third least populous district in Karnataka, after Kodagu and BengaluruRural.
