Dear friends and colleagues,

This time, ICTVC welcomes you in Patras, Greece! Our 7th conference is organised by the Institute for the Study of Typography & Visual Communication with the collaboration and support of the Library and Information Centre of the University of Patras and is endorsed by the Graphic Communication programme of the Department of Design & Multimedia, the University of Nicosia, the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication at the University of Reading, the Department of Graphic and Visual Communication, University of West Attica, Greece, ATypI (Association Typographique Internationale), IIID (International Institute for Information Design), IP3 (Institute of Paper, Printing & Publishing), ISTD (International Society of Typographic Designers), AEPM (Association of European Printing Museums), CAGDI (Cyprus Association of Graphic Designers and Illustrators), HELGRAMED (Hellenic Union of Graphic Arts and Media Technology Engineers), the Greek Visual Communication Archive, the Museum of Typography, Chania, Greece, the Hambis Municipal Museum of Printmaking, Cyprus. We would like to warmly thank the academic institutions and the professional associations but also all our old friends, who keep supporting the conference since it started, seventeen years ago, in 2002. A big thank you to those who just entered the ICTVC experience, offering voluntarily valuable time and energy. Once again, after more than fifteen months of preparations, we are about to experience the high calibre of content and the unique diversity that ICTVC is renowned for, spending five days with workshop leaders, speakers, and delegates from thirty different countries and five continents. This year’s conference theme is Challenging design paths and our short description states that “we will examine the value of design for visual communication and provoke participants to challenge current assumptions”. Even a quick look at the programme as a whole, i.e., the workshops, the talks, the special sessions, and the events, provides enough evidence for yet another attempt by the ICTVC Organising Committee to set up an interdisciplinary discussion forum; a forum that will offer to participants interested in asking questions a unique opportunity to think about the issues this conference has been set up to explore in the field of typography and visual communication, but also at the meeting places between that field and other disciplines. ICTVC continues to support open, meaningful dialogue, attracting people who share a passion for research, education, and practice in thematic areas informed by its previous events, formulated in response to the sociopolitical, economic and cultural environment. ICTVC places this discourse in the context of the impact of new technologies on research, theory, history, education and practice in typography, printing, publishing, and other visual communication disciplines. We hope you’ll enjoy the 7th ICTVC 2019 Patras journey!

GENERAL INFORMATION

VenueConference: 17–21 June 2019All conference sessions and exhibitions, apart from some workshops and events, will take place at the “University of Patras Conference and Cultural Centre”, an autonomous meeting and exhibition complex of spaces located in the University Campus, 7 Km east of the city of Patras, in the area of Rion.

ClimateWeather in JuneGreece has a Mediterranean climate with a definite seasonal variation. In June it will be summer with an average temperature of 25°C. Sweaters and light jackets are recommended for windy evenings. Most of the indoor venues are air-conditioned. Swimming is possible at that time of the year.

CurrencyThe Greek currency is Euros. Credit cards are widely used in most establishments. Most currencies and traveller’s cheques can be easily changed either at banks, hotels or exchanging kiosks with some handling charges.

TimeGreece is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+2) throughout the year.

LanguageGreek is the official language but English is widely spoken as well as German and French.

Languages of the ConferenceEnglish and Greek; no simultaneous translation.

Certificates of attendanceThe ICTVC participants will receive their certificate after completion of the conference via mail.

Conference badgeICTVC participants wearing their badge will have access to all registered sessions of the Conference, the Exhibition, and the coffee breaks. All those, who are willing to participate in specially arranged lunches, dinners or in other social events organised during the conference, will be provided with tickets.

Death in Design

There’s no point in avoiding the subject. This is an exhibition about death. About death and about design. With design being a tool for dealing with a selection of questions related to death. The word selection is pivotal because the exhibition does not deal with all the important questions about death, but opens up those that interested us, and which we hope are important. Seeing as how death is endless and consequently immeasurable, we decided to measure it –at least partially– in measurable life. We decided to observe, measure and interpret the results and experiences we acquired from the delivered lectures and workshops. In eight months, we carried out eight 4- to 6-hour workshops in Ljubljana, Graz, Zagreb, and Bihać. The exhibition examines the advantages and disadvantages of a world without death, and offers pointers on how to detect, depict, explain, kill, and survive death. The exhibition encourages you, the visitor, to refute, reflect, frown upon, remember, and be entertained. All the responses are correct. Or, as we repeatedly emphasized at the workshops: all thoughts are welcome. Including a crumpled sheet of paper in the bin.

Βραχογραφίες της Νάξου: Οπτική ανάλυση και σύγχρονος σχεδιασμός | Petroglyphs of Naxos: Visual analysis and contemporary design

Το τμήμα Γραφιστικής και Οπτικής Επικοινωνίας της Σχολής Εφαρμοσμένων Τεχνών και Πολιτισμού σε συνεργασία με την Οργανωτική επιτροπή του 7ου ICTVC διοργανώνουν έκθεση αφίσας με θέμα, Βραχογραφίες της Νάξου: Οπτική ανάλυση και σύγχρονος σχεδιασμός. Οι φοιτητές του Στ’ εξαμήνου του τμήματος, έχοντας σαν κεντρικό θεματικό πυρήνα τις Βραχογραφίες της Νάξου μελέτησαν ανέλυσαν αυτές τις εγχάρακτες παραστάσεις στις λίθινες πλάκες και σχεδίασαν εικονογράμματα για τις ανάγκες του μαθήματος «Σήμανση και Επικοινωνιακός Σχεδιασμός». Συνδέουν το έργο τους με αξίες που εμπεριέχονται στην έννοια πολιτισμός και αποτελούν πηγή δημιουργίας στο σήμερα. Αναλύουν, εκφράζουν και σχεδιάζουν έχοντας σαν αφετηρία ιστορικές, αρχαιολογικές πληροφορίες με τρόπο σύγχρονο, εύληπτο και φρέσκο, απευθυνόμενοι σε όσο το δυνατόν ευρύ κοινό εισάγοντας ταυτόχρονα ένα νέο τρόπο έκφρασης της επικοινωνίας.

Dr Vangelis Hatzitheodorou and Katerina Antonaki, faculty members at the Department of Graphic and Visual Communication, University of West Attica, Greece, present their students’ work for the course “Signage and Communication Design”. The exhibition “Petroglyphs of Naxos: Visual analysis and contemporary design” is staged at the Conference and Cultural Centre of the University of Patras within the framework of the 7th ICTVC 2019.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM PATRAS08.00–20.00 8–21 June

A selection of 54 posters from the four international competitions that have been organised by the Μουσείο Τυπογραφίας / Museum of Typography in Chania, Crete, (established by Giannis and Eleni Garedakis), are presented at an exhibition within the framework of the 7th ICTVC in Patras. The exhibition is staged at the Archaeological Museum of Patras, from 8 to 21 June 2019, and is curated by the printer–lithographer Antonis Papantonopoulos.

Aφίσες επιλεγμένες από τους τέσσερις διεθνείς διαγωνισμούς που έχει διοργανώσει το Μουσείο Τυπογραφίας Γιάννη και Ελένης Γαρεδάκη παρουσιάζονται στην έκθεση αφίσας με θέμα “Τυπογραφία: Παρελθόν, παρόν και μέλλον” που διοργανώνει το Μουσείο Τυπογραφίας σε συνεργασία με το Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Πατρών από τις 8 έως τις 21 Ιουνίου 2019, στην Πάτρα.Η έκθεση πραγματοποιείται στο πλαίσιο του 7ου Διεθνούς Συνεδρίου Τυπογραφίας & Οπτικής Επικοινωνίας (ICTVC) και την επιμέλειά της έχει αναλάβει ο Αντώνης Κ. Παπαντωνόπουλος, λιθογράφος–τυπογράφος, συνεργάτης του Μουσείου Τυπογραφίας.

Letterpress–Light

PANAGIOTOPOULOS TIPOGRAFIO.GRJeff Pulaski | USA9.30–16.30 Monday 17 & Tuesday 18 June

Letterpress printing is a physical process that allows artists to experience letters as 3D objects. In this guided “letterpress–light” workshop, participants will “print” with raised laser-cut letterforms to create typographic experiments using stamping and rubbing techniques that mimic normal letterpress. This workshop will be completely experimental, allowing designers to push the boundaries of typographic form in new ways and in the process discover more expressive solutions to typographic problems.Jeff Pulaski is the Director of the School of Art, Design and Creative Industries at Wichita State University and an active letterpress printer and collector.

This hands-on workshop will use the newly created letterpress “P22 Blox” which uses only 8 basic shapes to create lettering and pattern design. Experiments with these letterpress blocks will allow students to learn the basics of letterpress and problem solving given strict limitations of material.Richard Kegler is the founder of P22 Type Foundry and is currently the Director the Wells College Book Arts Center in Aurora, NY.

Designing Dynamic Logos

PaperGo, Patras city centreIrene Vlachou, Laurence Penney, Emilios Theofanous | UK Kostas Bartsokas | GERMANY 9.30–16.30 Monday 17 & Tuesday 18 June

In this two-day workshop participants will learn how to draw letterforms with a font editor and how to turn letterforms into a variable font; the result will be a dynamic wordmark. Content: Dynamic and interactive logos: an introduction; Variable font technology; Letterforms on paper and on screen; Remastering outlines with techniques suitable for variable font formats; Wordmark (logo) to life with CSS animation. Requirements: Laptop Mac with latest OS or PC with Windows 10.Irene Vlachou is a typeface designer working between Bristol and Athens; Laurence Penney is a consultant in font technology based in Bristol, UK; Emilios Theofanous is a typeface designer and cat owner from Cyprus; Kostas Bartsokas is a Greek typeface designer and typographer.

Κατά τη διάρκεια του διήμερου σεμιναρίου, θα γνωρί-σουμε τη βασική τεχνική Ιαπωνικής Βιβλιοδεσίας με μαλακό και σκληρό εξώφυλλο και την Κοπτική Βιβλι-οδεσία (Coptic Binding). Συνοπτικά, η θεματολογία: Βασικές αρχές βιβλιοδεσίας, ιδιότητες και χαρακτηρι-στικά του χαρτιού. Σχετική ορολογία, εξοικείωση με τον απαραίτητο εξοπλισμό και τις πρώτες ύλες, ιστορικό περίγραμμα των τεχνικών Ιαπωνικής και Κοπτικής βιβλιοδεσίας και σύγχρονες εφαρμογές τους. Ιαπωνική Βιβλιοδεσία με μαλακό εξώφυλλο (εξώφυλλο με βαρύ χαρτί). Κατά τη διάρκεια του εργαστηρίου οι συμμετέχοντες θα έχουν την ευκαιρία να γνωρίσουν τις βασικές αρχές της μεταξοτυπίας και να έρθουν σε επαφή με τα βασικά υλικά και τις απαραίτητες τεχνικές με ιδιαίτερη έμφαση στην DIY μεταξοτυπία σε χαρτί και ύφασμα. Θα μάθουν επίσης τα απαραίτητα βήματα για τη σωστή προετοιμα-σία αρχείων προς εκτύπωση, χρησιμοποιώντας λογισμι-κό επεξεργασίας γραφικών και εικόνων, και θα έχουν την ευκαιρία να κάνουν τις δικές τους εκτυπώσεις.Σύντομη εισαγωγή στην τεχνική της μεταξοτυπίας. abilities are encouraged to join. No existing technical expertise is required. One smartphone is needed per pair. In this workshop we will use every day tools like the smartphone and notepad to collect data on the environment around us, walking paths through Patras and its dataspace. Participants will engage and learn about how to work with data, from collecting, ana-lysing and editing, through to visualising it. They will gain understanding in data literacy and chart literacy. Aspects they could examine could include: architec-ture, green spaces, flora, fauna, people, vehicles, pol-lution, litter, advertising, graffiti, signs, shops, security. Participant pairs will take to the streets, walking around Patras to gather data. When they return the group will go through a series of exercises to analyse and visualise their collected data. The group will reflect on any in-sights gained from the visualisations. This is a practical and hands on exercise.David Hunter is a multi-disciplinary designer, program-mer, and educator from London. David originally studied Graphic Design where he gained an interest in program-ming for interaction design, data visualization, and gen-erative design. These cross discipline skills have been put to use for commercial clients, exhibitions, and as a Senior Lecturer at Ravensbourne, encouraging Graphic Design students to engage with technology and programming.
