Why do we collect Safety Statistics? Opportunities….

• Governments and organizations around the world ask companies for occupational injury and illness data and documentation.

• Each country has slightly different reporting requirements, but overall, employers are required to keep records of fatalities, injuries and illnesses associated with work.

• Organizations use safety metrics to measure performance in the same way they use metrics to measure quality and quantity in production. We use them: – To analyse improvement or changes in our safety performance– To benchmark with our peers to meet our Global Sustainability Goals.– To report statistics as required to various Government agencies– To promote effective strategic planning in order to continually reduce

our accidents

Why standardise? – The Challenges

Are these cases work-related?

• A fall in the car park of the manufacturing plant where the employee fractures her ankle. She tripped over her own feet; there were no holes or debris in her pathway.

• A car accident in which an employee is injured on his way to work.

• Two employees are laughing and playfully shoving each other on Monday morning, celebrating their football team’s win over the weekend. One employee falls and fractures his arm. This incident takes place in the manufacturing area where they work.

Are they Recordable/Reportable?

8

What have we standardised?

• We use United States’ OSHA record-keeping Standards

• Recordable Cases – (Also known as Company Recordable Case) All work-related illnesses and injuries which result in:– medical treatment beyond first aid (Note: with a finite list of first aid treatments)

– restricted activity, – One or more lost day(s), – the loss of consciousness or – death.

• Rates based on 200,000 hours – (100 employees x 40 hours x 50 weeks per year)

• All cases must be recorded on our system within 7 working days of occurrence.

We have had to introduce ONE Global Safety Reporting System

• EHS Web-Based Information Management System - InSite– Baxter’s occupational injury and illness recordkeeping is housed in one

electronic database. – This program meets Baxter’s reporting requirements and allows for

country-specific reporting. – It tracks the injuries and illnesses, the severity of the cases, injury/illness

type, causal factors, and restricted or lost days for each location or group of facilities.

Opportunity to examine the accidents

Further opportunities

• Target Recordable Cases not Lost Time only

• Introduce Occupational Health review of the cases to confirm “recordability of the case”

• “Public” reporting of each recordable incident using Lean theory:– “A3-format” reporting – one large sheet

summary– Define – Measure – Analyze – Improve –

Control (DMAIC) Process– Root Cause process– Ownership lies with the Plant Managers– Opportunities to improve and share after

every accident– “Gemba” Review Points – “Where value

is created” / “Where it happens”
