Philosophy

Challenger School students become individuals led neither by peer pressure nor common sentiment but by the strength of their own independent thinking. They recognize that the purpose of life is the individual pursuit of happiness through productive work.

The foundation of all we do, as expressed by the Founding Fathers and the Constitution of this country, is the unalienable rights to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, along with the positive values that support those rights.

Our assembly subjects, song selections, traditional American cultural celebrations, and even our behavior management methods are enhanced by the ideal of treating students as independent equals held individually accountable for their own behavior.

Our educational philosophy (why we do what we do) and methods (how we do what we do) are unique. We teach children to become independent thinkers by leading them to understand the why behind the what. They learn to integrate concrete facts into concepts through a process of identification and classification by recognizing essential similarities and differences.

Our emphasis on independent reasoning skills (which is so rare in today’s world) results in our students’ extraordinary rationality and academic performance.

With your support of Challenger’s philosophy and policies, we will endeavor to accomplish our mission:

to prepare children to become self-reliant, productive individuals;

to teach them to think, speak, and write with clarity, precision, and independence;

to lead them to recognize and value their individuality and unalienable rights;

and to inspire them to embrace challenge and find joy and self-worth through achievement.

Admissions

Applications for enrollment are accepted without regard to race, color, religion, gender, or ethnic or national origin.

To enroll, read the policies contained in this Handbook for Parents, and complete and sign an application. Submit the application, required forms, and application fees. (See Tuition and Fees.) For identification verification, please bring the child’s birth certificate or passport (new students only).

Submission of an application does not guarantee a child’s acceptance. A child may be considered accepted when a parent receives written notification. Children presently enrolled at Challenger School must reapply each year. Progress, comportment, and timely application are used to determine acceptance. Priority enrollment will be given to qualified returning Challenger students and their unenrolled siblings. Only students whose accounts are in good standing will be considered for re-enrollment.

Programs are offered based on space availability and sufficient demand. Campuses are not authorized to offer services, classes, or alternate days/hours that are not listed on enrollment forms.

Parents will be notified in writing of changes to school policies. In general, policy changes are made at the start of a new school year.

Preschool Children must be at least two years nine months old to be considered for preschool enrollment. However, in Idaho and Texas, state regulations at the present time prevent us from accepting children younger than three.

Children must be trained in bathroom habits. Wearing diapers or training pants (including pull-up style) is not acceptable.

Kindergarten Children must be five years old by the cut-off dates below to be considered for kindergarten enrollment.

Student Placement

The admissions process includes interviews and evaluations to determine the appropriate class for each child.

If it is later determined that a different class assignment is more suitable, the administration will advise parents and make the necessary adjustments.

Challenger School reserves the right to alter class size and makeup during the school year according to business needs and demand. Class size and teacher-to-pupil ratio will vary; these, and final class placements, will be determined by the administration.

PreschoolPreschool children are placed in specific classes based on their ages and maturity as determined by Challenger administration. Any children newly enrolled for fall must visit the campus before the first day of class.

Kindergarten–Grade 8Beginning class placement is tentative and based upon the results of our placement test.

Class placement is based on several factors. Those factors include, but are not limited to, scholastic expectations, student motivation, and comportment.

Children who did not attend Challenger during 2019–2020 must be tested. A testing fee must be paid at the time the placement test is given. (See Tuition and Fees.) Testing does not guarantee space availability.

Health and Safety

EmergencyBy signing the Release and Agreement, parents authorize Challenger School personnel to obtain emergency medical treatment, dental care, and transport for their child at the parent’s expense.

By signing the application, parents certify that they have provided all pertinent information on the application regarding medical conditions or allergies that affect their child. They should also alert the campus to any newly discovered allergies for their child.

In the event of an emergency, we will attempt to contact individuals listed in our records as emergency contacts for the child. If the first emergency contact cannot be reached, we will leave a message and proceed to contact other authorized persons in the order you establish. Contacts on the emergency form need to have agreed to pick up the child when called and must speak enough English to respond to any situation. We will always contact emergency medical personnel first if the nature of the emergency warrants immediate medical care.

Any change in contact information must be reported to the campus immediately.

Challenger does not employ school nurses; however, administrators and teachers are trained in school emergency procedures. Emergency plans are posted throughout the campus.

Food/GiftsIn the interests of health and safety, Challenger requests that parents do not send food, gifts, or toys of any kind for other students. Challenger will provide food for certain school activities.

BehaviorNo corporal punishment is administered at Challenger. Parents will be notified of any behavioral concerns.

HealthAll children must be in compliance with state standards for immunization in order to attend school. Please refer to the state immunization forms for current requirements.

MedicationIt is Challenger’s policy to administer medication to students or to supervise students’ self-administration of medication in compliance with Challenger’s written procedures and applicable law. Challenger strongly recommends parents and physicians schedule medication so students do not have to medicate during the school day. Contact your Headmaster with any concerns.

Communicable IllnessesParents must notify the campus if they or any of their children contract a communicable disease such as chicken pox, hepatitis, measles, or strep throat. The campus will notify parents if their children are exposed to a communicable disease at school.

If a child shows any signs of illness or infection, the child should be kept home. If Challenger observes signs of illness or infection at school, the child will be taken to the office, and the parent or another authorized party will be asked to pick up the child within one hour. A child may return to school with a doctor’s note verifying that it is safe to return or after being free of symptoms for 24 hours.

Criteria for Child Staying Home• Fever—100° F or above• Vomiting• Cough—a wet, wheezy cough with mucus• Diarrhea• Runny nose—yellow or green drainage• Ear infection• Eye infection—yellow or green drainage or pink

Pesticides and Air FreshenersChallenger periodically applies pesticides in and around its facilities as part of a pest control program. Chemical air fresheners are also used on premises. Prior notice and information is available from campus management upon written request.

Insect Repellent and SunscreenChallenger does not provide or administer insect repellent or sunscreen.

Arrival and Departure

Our drive-through arrival and departure routines allow you to drop off and pick up your child without leaving your vehicle. It’s safer and faster than parking and walking into the school. Parents are responsible for ensuring that all designated drivers follow these procedures. Please watch for Challenger School employees wearing safety vests. They will guide you and assist your child to and from your vehicle. As a courtesy, we will assist in buckling or unbuckling young children who need assistance. However, Challenger employees are not experts in all safety restraint systems, so it is your responsibility to verify that all children are properly secured before exiting the loading area.

Preschool Sign-In/Sign-Out StickersBecause preschool children must be signed in and out, we provide stickers to speed up the process. These will be sent home periodically with students. Parents who drop off or pick up preschool children during drive-through times must use these stickers. Before arriving, fill out all the information except the time. When you arrive, fill in the time, and hand the sticker to the teacher who helps your child in or out of your vehicle.

Drive-Through ArrivalPlease arrive at the time and place designated for drop-off on your campus’s Arrival and Departure Information document. Pull up as far as possible, put your car in park, and wait for a teacher to open the door on the passenger side of the vehicle before your child exits. Do not get out of your car while in the drop-off lane.

Arrival Before or After Drive-Through Times• Elementary students enrolled in Extended

Classtime and all-day preschool students who arrive before the drive-through times should be walked to the designated room and signed in by parents. They may arrive as early as 7:00 a.m.

• Elementary students not enrolled in Extended Classtime who arrive before the scheduled arrival time will be placed in Extended Classtime, and parents will be charged the Extended Classtime Daily Drop-In Rate.

• Students who arrive after the drive-through times should be signed in at the office.

Drive-Through DepartureChallenger provides and requires visor cards for parents/guardians to display when picking up children during drive-through departure. Upon request, we will issue additional cards to adults listed as responsible parties on the application and on the Identification and Emergency Information form.

Please arrive at the time and place designated for pick-up in your campus’s Arrival and Departure Information document. Place the visor card in your vehicle so it will be visible. We will bring your child to your car. Remain in line until the car in front of you has pulled away; do not pull around it unless instructed to do so by a staff member.

Contact the office prior to afternoon departure times if you need to pick up an all-day preschool or Extended Classtime student using the departure routine.

If an authorized adult without a visor card is picking up your child, you must call the office to let us know. The person must then present a photo ID at the office to pick up the child.

Departure Before or After Drive-Through TimesAnyone picking up a student outside of departure times must be on the pick-up list and may be required to present a photo ID.

• Early departure from class is disruptive to all students in the class. If it is necessary, call or go to the campus office.

• Late and/or extended drop-in fees apply when children are not picked up during regular departure time. (See Tuition and Fees.) Students will be handled as follows:

∘ Preschool and morning kindergarten students will typically be waiting in the office.

∘ Kindergarten–grade 8 students will be placed in Extended Classtime.

Additional InformationCampuses may restrict walk-in access for a limited period of time each day to ensure the safety of students during drive-through arrival and departure times.

ParkingPark only in the designated visitors’ parking area when you come into the campus. Do not park in loading zones, driveways, or No Parking areas. Please use parking spaces reserved for the disabled only if you have a permit.

Car PoolsCall the office to obtain lists of people who want to form car pools.

Courteous DrivingThe on-campus speed limit is 5 mph. Drive slowly and carefully for safety and to preserve our relationship with neighbors, the city, and the police department. For everyone’s safety, the use of mobile electronic devices is not allowed during arrival and departure.

It will help the flow of traffic if parents do not all arrive at the exact beginning of arrival and departure times.

Child SupervisionPlease do not drop off your child to wait unattended. There is no before- or after-school playground supervision except for those enrolled in all-day preschool or Extended Classtime.

Extended Classtime

Extended Classtime is available before and after school for kindergarten through eighth grade students only. Half-day kindergarten students may enroll in the extended session adjacent to their programs. The morning session begins at 7:00 a.m. The afternoon session ends at 6:00 p.m.

Students must be signed in upon arrival and must be signed out before leaving the campus.

Extended Classtime Payment Extended Classtime is charged in full months regardless of the number of days enrolled. The prepaid annual rate is the only discount that applies to the Extended Classtime program.

Daily Drop-InIf a student is not enrolled in Extended Classtime, he or she may join the class on a per-day basis. The minimum charge is the daily drop-in rate. (See Tuition and Fees.)

The daily drop-in rate includes both morning and afternoon sessions. (There is no additional charge for using the afternoon session on the same day your child has used the morning session.)

Please notify the office each time you will be using Extended Classtime on a drop-in basis.

Program Structure and ContentExtended Classtime is structured, and activities are organized for the maximum benefit of students. They enjoy PE games, art and craft activities, quiet table games, and music, as well as reading or story time. The afternoon session also includes a brief recess, the opportunity to complete homework, and a time to eat a snack brought from home.

Students are responsible for completing as much of their homework as possible, cleaning up after themselves, and preparing themselves to leave at the end of the day.

Select campuses may offer enrichment classes to students enrolled in afternoon Extended Classtime.

The Challenger School Comportment Code is strictly enforced. Students who do not abide by the code are not allowed to continue their Extended Classtime enrollment.

Unless otherwise stated, all Challenger School policies as outlined in the Handbook for Parents also apply to summer camps. Exceptions and clarifications are noted in this section.

COVID-19 ProceduresPlease recognize that the rules and regulations that govern children and camp operations during the COVID-19 pandemic are dynamic. We expect additional changes and will notify you of them on an ongoing basis. Parents must be flexible and understand and accept that there are inherent risks in attending summer camp despite Challenger’s best efforts to keep facilites clean and safe. See Challenger COVID-19 Practices for details.

Schedule New camp sessions may be offered each week. They may begin as early as May 18, 2020, and may continue weekly through July 31, 2020. Due to the COVID-19 situation, the availability, dates, and times of camps will vary; contact individual campuses for details.

AdmissionsBy signing the application, you certify that you understand that your child’s attendance at summer camp does not guarantee admission for the 2020–2021 school year.

Priority enrollment for summer camps will be given to students who were enrolled in one of the original summer 2020 program offerings, current Challenger School students who were enrolled for 2019–2020 or who are enrolled for 2020–2021, and unenrolled siblings.

The Physician’s Report and Report of Health Examination are due as soon as possible but no later than the first day of camp for children new to Challenger.

Arrival and DepartureOur drive-through arrival and departure procedures have been changed due to COVID-19. For details, refer to your campus-specific Arrival and Departure Information document.

Parent PortalAt least one parent and the person responsible for payment must establish a Parent Portal account to access important child and account information.

PlacementCampus managers will administer testing as necessary.

ClothingDuring summer camp, uniforms are not required.

Parents must dress children in safe, comfortable clothing. Shorts and skirts may not be shorter than mid-thigh.

For safety reasons, children are not to wear flip-flops, sandals, shoes with wheels, or shoes with open toes or heels.

OrientationVisor cards, summer school arrival and departure information, and Sign-In/Sign-Out stickers (for preschool children) will be available on the first day of camp.

Tuition PaymentThere is no application fee for summer camp.

Tuition will be charged in full weeks for all programs starting on the first camp day of each week. There will be no proration for days missed, early withdrawal, late enrollment, or mandatory campus closures within a camp week.

Tuition will not be charged for full camp weeks that are cancelled due to a mandatory campus closure. See page 13 for Camp Weeks schedule.

End of Enrollment

WithdrawalParents who wish to withdraw their child must do so by notifying Challenger School in writing. When a student is withdrawn, one or more of the following may apply:

• Minimum Charge for Withdrawal—A withdrawal after July 31, 2020, regardless of when application was submitted, will be assessed the greater of the prorated tuition or the minimum charge for withdrawal.*

• Loss of Discount—If annual tuition was paid in full and a withdrawal occurs after school has begun, any applicable refund amount will not include the discount for prepaid annual tuition.*

• Loss of Refund—There is no refund of tuition for withdrawals after May 31, 2021.

(*See Tuition and Fees.)

Suspension and TerminationIt is important to Challenger that parents and students maintain good relationships with teachers and staff. Challenger reserves the right to decline continued enrollment/services to parents who in Challenger’s sole judgment are uncooperative or are abusive to school administrators or staff or who in Challenger’s opinion will not be satisfied with Challenger’s efforts, choices, or services.

Students must meet Challenger’s standards of academic progress and comportment. Failure to meet these standards may result in suspension or termination of enrollment.

Challenger may terminate a student’s enrollment if tuition and late fees are not paid by the end of the month in which payment is due.

Challenger reserves the right to terminate a student’s enrollment after three consecutive days of nonattendance. Tuition billing will accrue during days of absence until notice is received.

Domestic DisputesChallenger staff will not become involved in issues related to family disputes, divorce, separation, or child custody. We will not make judgments or assertions about the suitability of one parent or another. We do not deny parental access without a court order. If either parent or responsible party seeks to involve Challenger in domestic or custody matters, he will be responsible for all costs and legal fees incurred by Challenger and its employees.

Arbitration of DisputesParents who have a legal or other claim against Challenger or any of its officers or employees that cannot be resolved through negotiation with Challenger, including, but not limited to, any dispute arising from the attempt to enroll or enrollment in Challenger, agree by signing the application to submit the dispute to binding arbitration in accordance with the rules of the American Arbitration Association (“Association”). The arbitration will be conducted at the office of the Association closest to the campus in which the child is enrolled. If space is not available in the office of the Association, then the arbitration will be held at a facility in reasonable proximity to the Association office.

Class Action WaiverAny dispute resolution proceeding, whether in arbitration or in court, will be conducted only on an individual basis and not in a class, consolidated, or representative action, nor in a private attorney general capacity.

Tuition Payment

Tuition payments must be received by the 15th of the month; account statements are available on the Parent Portal on the 2nd of the month. Returned payments and payments received after the 15th will be assessed fees. (See Tuition and Fees.)

The monthly payment does not correspond to the number of school days in the month. Rather, it is a standardized payment toward the total annual tuition.

Students who are enrolled through the end of the academic year and whose tuition and fees are paid in full will be given their yearbook and class picture.

Tuition and fees are subject to change.

Prorated Tuition CalculationOnce school has begun, late enrollments, early withdrawals*, or transfers will result in a prorated tuition that is calculated by applying the daily rate to the number of days enrolled.

(*See End of Enrollment.)

Adjusted First PaymentThe first tuition payment for a student who enrolls after school has begun is larger than the published monthly payment in order to align future payments to the standardized tuition schedule. It is calculated in the following way:

remaining number of school days× daily rate

prorated tuition for the year− remaining monthly billings

first payment

Multiple-Child DiscountA discount on tuition is given for multiple children (siblings) enrolled from the same family—10% for two to three children, 14% for four or more.

Early Returning RateThis rate is available to current students whose applications are received no later than February 28, 2020, who remain enrolled through the end of the 2019–2020 academic year, and who do not cancel their original qualifying 2020–2021 academic year registration.

Payment OptionsOption 1: Direct DebitTuition payments are automatically withdrawn from your bank account on the 15th day of each month (or the first banking day thereafter) based on programs for which your child is enrolled and other charges incurred.

Option 2: Online Bill PayTuition and fees may be paid by electronic transfer by using the online bill pay service offered by your financial institution. (See a campus administrator for more information about online bill pay.)

Option 3: Prepaid Annual TuitionTuition may be paid in advance for the year. If paid in full for the year by July 31, 2020, a discount applies. Prepaid annual tuition may be paid by cash, check, direct debit, or electronic transfer.

RefundsThe application fee is non-transferable and non-refundable unless:

• Challenger School declines acceptance. • a student is placed on a wait list and not accepted

into any program before the end of the applicable school year.

• a student on a wait list is withdrawn before being registered into any program for the applicable school year.

No deductions, refunds, or makeup days will be given for absences. Tuition will not be refunded for campus closures due to unforeseen circumstances such as snowstorms, earthquakes, or other conditions beyond Challenger’s control. A credit balance of less than $10 will not be refunded by check but may be applied toward tuition.

CollectionsBy signing the Enrollment Application, the person responsible for payment agrees to pay all attorney fees, court costs, filing fees, and charges or commissions of up to 50% of the principal balance that may be assessed to Challenger by any collection agency retained to pursue past due balances. The person responsible for payment further agrees to pay interest at the rate of 1.5% per month (18% per year) on such balances.
