Warminster walker’s personal challengeIn January 2013 Penelope Harrison moved to Warminster from Co. Durham. Not knowing anyone in the area, she joined the Warminster GWW group and was soon finding her way around the area and getting to know many people.

The group helped Penelope socially and, as happens with all the walkers, she has increased her physical activity levels and become much fitter; walking an average of seven miles a day!

On 14 May 2018, in memory of her daughter Emma, who died from a brain tumour in 2010, Penelope challenged herself to walk from Reading to Bristol along the Kennet and Avon Canal. By walking 100 miles in a week Penelope hoped to raise £1000 for The Brain Tumour Charity. We would like to congratulate Penelope for her amazing achievement and for raising £1720 for this worthy charity.

Big Pledge Challenge winnersThe GWW group from RWB took the award for the most active community group or club team. They exceeded their target for the challenge by 375%

The group take part in many activities including fitness classes, golf and swimming. By adding their weekly walking times onto their activities, they have managed to achieve even better results.

The walking group is not just about getting active but is a great place to meet and socialise with other people and is a part of the local community.

Public Health news New health 4 life e-toolkit In an effort to help combat the rising tide of obesity in the county Wiltshire Council has launched a new free weight management course as well as providing 1-2-1 support for residents to help them adopt a healthier lifestyle, lose weight and become more active.

These initiatives are all free of charge and more information can be found at:

www.wiltshire.gov.uk/public-health-weight

Relaunch of Active 10Physical inactivity is a major cause of disease and disability for adults in the UK. To help combat this in adults, Public Health England has launched the Active 10 app which aims to encourage adults across England to incorporate more physical activity into their life by simply going for a brisk ten minute walk (or more) every day.

The app shows users how much brisk walking they are doing each day and provides tips and encouragement on how they can fit ten minute bursts of brisk walking, known as Active 10s, into their day.

A brisk 10 minute walk everyday can lead to the following health benefits:

• Increased physical fitness

• Greater ease of performance of everyday physical activities

• Improved mood

• Improved quality of life

• Increased physical leanness and healthier weight

People can download the app by searching Active 10 on Google play store (for Android), iTunes app store (for iOS) or at the One You website www.nhs.uk/oneyou/apps/#active-10

GWW embraces autumn with a fresh new lookThe team at GWW have been very busy over the summer working on a new look for our promotional materials and updating all our flyers and posters.

The generic leaflet has been completely updated with all our walks, and a new generic poster is available to highlight the walking project in general. We will replace all the smaller session specific flyers for individual areas to refresh the image of local walks. The new look materials are already being distributed throughout the county to raise awareness of the project.

We need everyone to help us relaunch our great project by distributing posters and flyers across the county and flooding our local communities with this vital information.

Traditionally September is a great month for recruiting new walkers into the scheme and with the refreshed branding and help from all our walkers, hopefully we can encourage even more people to get on board with this project.

If you know of any local event or activity such as coffee mornings, WI meetings, sports and social club functions which are happening soon, please let us know so we can get plenty of promotional material out there.

Someone new moving into your local area? How about giving them the information or breaking the ice by inviting them to join you on your local walk?

Launch of GWW’s first dementia friendly walk A new addition to GWW’s repertoire of free weekly walks was launched on 2 July in Bradford on Avon.

The walk is aimed at those living with dementia and their carers. Dementia not only affects the patient but can have devastating effects on the lives of their loved ones and carers.

These people become isolated from the outside world very quickly and walking in a group not only provides essential physical activity but the all important social contact.

In January this year we were approached by Heather Moody who had walked with us in the past but the walk proved a bit too much for her husband who has dementia.

Heather was keen to start a walk solely for people living with dementia and their carers and was able to amass a team of 13 volunteers who would train as volunteer walk leaders especially for this particular activity and all were willing to undergo the necessary dementia awareness training.

The volunteers are very committed to this walk and keen to make a difference to the lives of those living with dementia and their carers.

The walk, though still small in numbers, is providing a great opportunity for this sometimes marginalised sector to increase their physical activity and their social interaction.

Watch this space for further developments of this initiative.

Challenge walk number three - TidworthThe third event in the challenge series found our walkers exploring the wonderful countryside around Tidworth. 123 walkers joined us at Tidworth Leisure Centre ready to set out on their chosen walk.

Two walks were on offer 6 miles and 4 miles.

The 6 mile walk took in part of the training ground area including tracks and meadow paths that have been left to grow wild plus some wonderful shady tracks through the woods. The 4 milers walked mainly along shaded, wooded tracks with great views across the plain.

For many this was a first time around Tidworth and the variety of the terrain and scenery came as a welcome surprise.

Solstice walk a huge successEncouraging our walkers to do even more, inspired two of the volunteer leaders to get together and organise an independent walk for their friends from across the county’s groups. Steve Williams and Bill Riddiford orchestrated a wonderful opportunity for their fellow walkers to witness the sunrise over Stonehenge at the summer solstice.

Walkers from across the county met at Antrobus House in Amesbury under cover of night to join Steve and Bill in the march to the sunrise!

Around the countyFocus on ChippenhamChippenham walking group was one of our first, as it was one of the three pilot groups established late in 2010. The group has grown and regularly attracts 50 walkers on their scheduled weekly walk.

Alan Roberts, one of the first trained volunteer walk leaders, is also a member of ramblers and has encouraged the group to take more exercise through his organisation of additional walks in areas of interest around the county. Alan’s latest offering is described below:

Two Tunnels GreenwayAs an occasional addition to the regular health walks, Chippenham group occasionally ventures further afield, most recently enjoying the Two Tunnels Greenway in Bath with 21 walkers taking part in this unique experience.

This virtually flat tarmac path connects Bath to Midford Valley, following the track bed of the former Somerset and Dorset Railway. It incorporates the Devonshire Tunnel (1/4 mile long) and the Combe Down Tunnel (at 1 mile the longest walking and cycling tunnel in UK), both with subdued lighting for user safety.

Starting from outside Bath Bus Station, alongside the River Avon for about a mile, then onto the Greenway for about 4 miles to reach Midford disused station platform. The Hope and Anchor pub was handy for refreshments, before catching the X67 bus back to Bath Bus Station.

Durrington walkers spread their wingsDurrington GWW group finish their weekly walk with coffee at Durrington Pool where they provide their own refreshments and make a contribution towards the cost.

Having amassed a large amount of cash over the months it was decided they should treat themselves and go for an additional walk in Newton Tony rewarding their efforts with lunch at a local pub!

Great idea everyone!
