CHALLENGE
GCSE Business Studies
Invent a Fairtrade snack, design
the packaging and promotional
campaign.
Deadline: 2nd September 2020
CONGRATULATIONS for choosing to study GCSE Business in Year 10. This is a
fantastic course. While studying the first two units of this course you are likely to learn
a lot of new things. You will be introduced to the world of small businesses and will look at
what makes someone a successful business person. You will find out how to develop an
idea and spot an opportunity, and turn that into a successful business.
We’ve all thought about the ways in which we’d make our favourite snack
tastier or more eye-catching, and the aim of this challenge is to do just
that! We want to encourage the next generation of decision- makers to
think creatively and be pioneering in their approach to life and enterprise,
as well as consider the impact their everyday choices have and the
importance of putting people before profit. This is a fairtrade project, and
looks at products already produced by TraidCraft.
In summary, the competition asks your group to:
• Come up with a new snack idea
• Invent a name for it
• Design the logo and packaging
• Design a marketing campaign to promote it
Full details and design templates are in the competition pack.
Happy designing!
1. A Fairtrade snack idea This could be something that exists but not as a
Fairtrade product, or a totally new idea of your
own.
There is no restriction on the format – it can
be in a bag, a bar, a box or any other style of
packaging. There are some packaging templates if
you’d like to use them but it’s not obligatory if you
have a better idea! Use your imagination!
The product must qualify for Fairtrade
certification so it must have one or more of the
following ingredients:
Fruit: raisins, apricots, blueberries,
bananas, mangos, dates, sultanas,
pineapple, grapefruit, grapes,
oranges and lemons.
Nuts and beans: brazil nuts,
cashew nuts, almonds, peanuts,
walnuts, cocoa beans (chocolate
– milk, white, dark) and coffee
beans.
Other: sugar and all products
made of sugar, crisped rice,
yoghurt coating, honey, candied
ginger.
You may also include the following
ingredients: cranberries, kiwi fruit,
peaches, pears, apples and hazelnuts.
We wouldn’t recommend using potatoes
or oats in your snack as these can’t be
Fairtrade certified.
We don’t expect you to work out a
whole recipe or to know about
binding ingredients and manufacturing
guidelines - we’re just looking for the
basic idea!
2. A snack name This should be catchy and it’s best to avoid
trademark names belonging to other companies
(e.g. Smarties®) as we won’t be able to use them!
3. A packaging design This is to make your product appeal to the target
audience and make it stand out on the shelf! It’s
a chance to be really creative and come up with
your own, original ideas. Best to avoid any
characters or trademarks belonging to other
companies (e.g. Tony the Tiger) as we won’t be
able to use them.
4. Marketing plan and campaign How are you going to advertise your new
product? This could include a poster or
billboard, magazine or newspaper advert, a TV,
internet or radio advert or any other form of
advertising you like.
We don’t expect you to send in video or audio
files and they won’t be judged more favourably
than any other form of advert, but if you do make
any video or audio adverts as part of your
campaign, you can send them as part of your
entry as long as they’re in the following format:
On a CDROM or DVD saved as a .wmv or
.mov file compatible with Windows Media
Player or Quicktime Player. The CDROM or
DVD must not contain any other files
apart from those which form part of your
competition entry. Video or audio files
must be no longer than 30 seconds each
and we will only look at/listen to one of
each type of file (one video and one audio
clip). Unfortunately we cannot return these
discs to you.
5. An explanation of what you
have learnt through taking part
in the competition. This should be no more than 2 sides of A4.
We’d like you to talk about what you’ve learnt
about Fairtrade and any other ethical
decisions you’ve had to make, about business
skills (especially designing and marketing a
product) and about working as a team.
If you word process this (which you don’t have
to), the font should be easy to read and no
smaller than point size 12.
Geobar is one of the most popular grocery items sold by Traidcraft. This diagram
shows you some of the key features of Traidcraft’s existing packaging. We don’t want
to restrict your creativity so your design doesn’t need to look like this, but it gives
you an idea of some of the things you might like to include:
Motivation to Buy
Brand
Traidcraft food packaging logo
Product Description
Fairtrade Mark*
Contents of Box
Key selling feature of the product

Traidcraft packaging.

In coming up with your product idea and
designing the packaging and promotional
campaign, you may like to think about the
following:
• What products already exist that you
think are delicious?
• What Fairtrade products already exist?
• What is already part of Traidcraft’s
range? (see traidcraftshop.co.uk)
• What is the target audience of your
snack?
• How can you make your snack appealing
to your target audience?
• What ideas can you get from looking at
packaging on other products?
• What are the Unique Selling Points
(USPs) of your product?
• How will you explain the USPs to your
prospective customers?
• What is the competition for your
product?
• How can you make your product stand
out from competitors’ products?
• How feasible might it be to manufacture
or produce your product?
Fair trade products are sourced ethically, from
producers who are paid fairly and have decent
working conditions.
• How can you ensure that the
Fairtrade aspects of your product
come across to potential
customers?
• What are the environmental credentials
of your product?
You may find some of the information
included with this pack useful.
How you take part and who you get involved
is obviously totally up to you.
