THE 60TH COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN (CSW) AND A WILPF UN PRACTICUM

PACKED WITH ENGAGED FUTURE LEADERS

BRANCH PROJECTS THAT KEEP WILPF

VISIBLE AND RAISE OUR IMPACT

WILPF MINI-GRANTS FUEL OUR MISSION & PROGRAM GOALS

THREE TIMES A YEAR WILPF US INVESTS IN OUR PROGRAM AND MISSION, FUNDING BRANCHES, MEMBERS & ISSUE COMMITTEE PROJECTS.

Will YOU invest in the future of our program?

WILPF US funded a delegation to the 60th Commission on the Status of Women in New York City, from March 12th-19th, as part of our National and International program work. Each year this learning and sharing experience reaps huge rewards for WILPF US as an entry point into the organization for new leadership among younger more diverse members.

Our thanks go to our Practicum Program Coordinators and Faculty Dixie Hairston, At-Large WILPF US Board Member Dallas TX, Programs Coordinator for the 2016 UN Practicum and Local2Global and Melissa Torres, Houston Branch, WILPF US Board Member and Representative to WILPF International. As Dixie explains, “These programs have an incredible impact on participants. It is one of the strongest opportunities we have to extend the reach of our organization and expand potential member recruitment. They offer unique opportunity for interaction between WILPF’s leaders of today (Local2Gobal Program, members of our Board and staff) and its leaders of tomorrow (UN Practicum in Advocacy)!” The theme of this year’s CSW was ‘Women’s Empowerment and its link to sustainable development.’

We were excited to welcome enthusiastic students from across the country to this important dialogue. They included: Mimi Duong, University of Houston; Anwar Mahajna, University of Cincinnati; Mridu Markan, from University of Wisconsin-Madison; Elsa Mendoza, University of Houston; Stephen Nsengiyumva, Brandeis University; Nancy Pratt, Union Institute University; Mayra Rodarte, University of Texas-El Paso; Shadi Saraf, Brandeis University; Emily Westgate, Brown University; and Alexandria Yakes, University of Iowa. Once again the coordinators and faculty for the Practicum did an outstanding job of keeping everyone focused and making it a really special week of experiential learning. Barbara Nielsen and Judith Mirkinson, of the San Francisco Branch were the Local 2 Global Program delegates.

The Local2Global Program selects members from US branches to bring WILPF perspectives into conversations with government and NGO representatives, learn the ropes, and prepare to take UN advocacy strategies and campaigns back to their local branch and beyond.

Here are a few branch projects funded by Mini Grants.

• Minneapolis Branch - for a Women and Money art project.

• The Boston Branch - to complete production of a film on Article9 of the Japanese Peace Constitution as a real template for peaceand to support the United Nations mandate for the abolition of war.

• Santa Cruz Branch - For an “All Aboard WILPF Train WithJane” Centennial project and enhancement of their public educationprogram for 2014-15, including Jane Addams book clubs, studygroups, Women’s History March exhibit, panel presentations andchildren’s book circles at various libraries.

• The Monterey County Branch - to develop its website.

• The Fresno Branch – To produce a video showing fracking sitesin California, amid the fragile water and drought conditions. Thisvideo can be used by anti-fracking branches all across the US.

For info contact Jean Hays [email protected]

Around 2010 the WILPF-US Board agreed to annually fund Mini-Grants to members to support ACTION and a closer connection between Program/Mission and members/branches. The WILPF-US Mini Grant Committee offers members and branches the opportunity to apply for small grants, from $250 up to $2500 designed for flexibility and a diversity of needs. This year the grant application deadlines are Feb. 1st, June 1st and Oct. 1st. These grants are meant to fund one-time projects, seed larger efforts to help procure outside funding, and strengthen or expand on-going work from the local to UN level.

Barbara West (Maine WILPF Branch) has been on the Mini-Grants Committee from the beginning and sums up the initiative well. “We are investing in projects and activities of branches, members or issue committees which support program and build WILPF.”

• They engage the greatest number of our members• Are replicable around the country.• They build WILPF, by promoting our work or by supporting our mission

Guidelines for Application and Application Forms must be used and can be found on the WILPF-US website at:

Allows us to provide vital WILPF Educational Materials for Practicum participants to use to promote WILPF’s program and advocacy efforts throughout the week.

Covers the registration fees for 1 student to attend the training session held prior to the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). This training session serves as an introduction to the CSW, provides an opportunity for the WILPF delegation to refine our advocacy strategies and network with delegates from thousands of NGOs across the globe.

Allows us to host an event at the CSW to discuss the work of WILPF US, its local branches and further our WILPF vision of Peace.

Would make it possible for us to provide a full scholarship to a student to attend the Practicum. Although participants are required to fundraise part of their tuition, offering partial or full scholarships is essential to expanding access to this program.

DISARM/END WARS SEEKS FUNDING FOR THE LIFEBLOOD OF WILPF’S PEACE ADVOCACY.

For the last many years the DISARM/END WARS Issue Committee has been the largest and best funded of our WILPF issue committees, benefiting from the generosity of a handful of long time WILPF donors, as it is so relevant to WILPF’s goal of achieving peace and freedom. But times change and the venerable Carol Urner and her Co-Chair Ellen Thomas are struggling to fund committee’s critical peace-advocacy and nuclear weapons abolition work. Will those members who love DISARM’s mission step up and contribute to keeping the committee on track for the next 2 years? Will they help us find outside donors who will contribute?
