The Problem

Disaster has struck Hampshire. A powerful geomagnetic storm caused by a solar mass ejection (or sun storm) has caused all the electrical systems in towns throughout the county to crash. Power is out, water has stopped flowing, hospitals and schools cannot operate and transport and food distribution infrastructures have collapsed.

The Challenge

• You’re the engineer rescue team tasked with getting the town up and running

• Watch the briefing video and make your way through the online challenge to Save the Day!

1) Radio Communications2) Traffic Control3) Hospital4) Water Works

Well done you’ve accessed the mainframe! Now, select the challenges in this order…

• The X-axis is the one along the bottom• The Y-axis is the one up the side

Part 1: Radio Communications

Page 12: Challenge Brief The Problem Disaster has struck Hampshire. A powerful geomagnetic storm caused by a solar mass ejection (or sun storm) has caused all

• What do you need to do to 7 to make it 10?• What do you need to do to 3 to make it 1?

Part 2: Radio Communications

TIP: Is it plus or minus?

Page 13: Challenge Brief The Problem Disaster has struck Hampshire. A powerful geomagnetic storm caused by a solar mass ejection (or sun storm) has caused all

1. Fill in the flow chart with what you think works2. Imagine the scene of the traffic lights3. Go through the flow chart you have created 4. Does it give enough time for your cars to go through the

lights

Part 1: Traffic Control

TIP: Click on the traffic lights to see the sequence the lights turn

Page 14: Challenge Brief The Problem Disaster has struck Hampshire. A powerful geomagnetic storm caused by a solar mass ejection (or sun storm) has caused all

1. Fill in the flow chart with what you think works2. Try and imagine the scene of the boat, bridge and car- go

through the flow chart you have created 3. Does your imaginary boat and cars make it under and

over the bridge safely?

Part 2: Traffic Control

If not, change it and try again

• A flat straight line means the object isn’t moving• A curved line means the object is getting faster (accelerating) or slowing down (decelerating)• A sloped straight line means the object is traveling at the same speed and the steeper the line, the faster it’s going

Part 1: Hospital

This is a DISTANCE TIME graph. And here’s what you need to know about these:

Page 16: Challenge Brief The Problem Disaster has struck Hampshire. A powerful geomagnetic storm caused by a solar mass ejection (or sun storm) has caused all

• Distance must be in kilometres not metres• Time must be in hours not seconds (divide by 60)• Answer must be to nearest whole number

BUT…

Part 2: Hospital

Page 17: Challenge Brief The Problem Disaster has struck Hampshire. A powerful geomagnetic storm caused by a solar mass ejection (or sun storm) has caused all

TIME = DISTANCE divided by SPEED

• You need the answer in MINUTES not hours

BUT…

TIP…

You know what ½ hour is in minutes, right? Yes, 30! What did you do to get from ½ (or 0.5) to 30?

Part 3: Hospital

Page 18: Challenge Brief The Problem Disaster has struck Hampshire. A powerful geomagnetic storm caused by a solar mass ejection (or sun storm) has caused all

1. Work out the GEAR RATIO

INPUT SPEED (rpm on left) divided by OUTPUT SPEED (rpm on right)

GEAR RATIO

2. You then know that…

TEETH ON DRIVEN GEAR

=

= TEETH OF DRIVER GEAR times by GEAR RATIO

Part 1: Waterworks

Page 19: Challenge Brief The Problem Disaster has struck Hampshire. A powerful geomagnetic storm caused by a solar mass ejection (or sun storm) has caused all

1. Again, work out the GEAR RATIO

= OUTPUT SPEED (rpm on right)

INPUT SPEED (rpm on left)

GEAR RATIO

[divided by]

Part 2: Waterworks

Page 20: Challenge Brief The Problem Disaster has struck Hampshire. A powerful geomagnetic storm caused by a solar mass ejection (or sun storm) has caused all

2. What is the gear ratio as a fraction? Fill it in below.

Then click the forward arrow for help…

= TEETH ON DRIVER GEAR

TEETH ON DRIVEN GEAR

Top part of Gear Ratio Fraction is...

Bottom part of Gear Ratio Fraction is …

many times larger than

this.
