delivered today by our own Chris Shorow.Wow, I had a full 10 seconds to preparean inspirational message on my way to thepulpit. As I walked forward my mind wasa blank, except for the many ways I would

chew out our minister of music! I prayedfor help. And as I took my place behind thpulpit a strange peace rushed over me andI began to talk about how unprepared all ous were for the birth of our Savior. I dontreally remember much of what I said, butafter the service three people approachedme with tears in their eyes, saying it was thmost inspirational message they had heardThey asked me for a manuscript of what Ihad said. I wished that I had one, too. Budidnt. The Holy Spirit had evidently spokfor me. And thank God for that, becauseI certainly had nothing to say on that day. What a gift I received.

Now most of the time I dont get thatlucky. But I find that as I prayerfully listenfor Gods voice in my life, I can experiencthat miraculous presence of the Holy Spiriguiding me in new ways of being. Im notin control of the Spirit, I am simply gratefufor the gifts it brings. Let us be grateful thiPentecost for the wonderful gift of the Spi

This Sunday we celebratePentecost. Itcomes from thespringtime festival

    that started 50days after Easter(hence thename Pentecost,meaning 50).

t is also known as the birthday of theChurch. We celebrate the gift of the HolySpirit, as recorded in Acts, that was giveno the disciples to carry on the ministry of

Jesus. Acts, which is part two of the Gospelof Luke, gives us the history of the earlychurch after Jesus resurrection. It parallelshe life of Jesus and reminds us that the

power of the Holy Spirit gives us the powerand responsibility to continue the healingministry of Jesus Christ.

For many of us Disciples, the Holy Spiritcan be a confusing thing. What is it? Weoften think of speaking in tongues or faithhealing as marks of the Holy Spirit. In factwe will have our scripture read in manyanguages this Sunday, just as the Spirit

gave the gift of understanding to that crowdassembled at the first Pentecost in Acts. But

the gift of the Holy Spirit is much morethan that. It is the spirit of the living Godthat gives us the strength, courage andability to reach out to others

Holy Spirit moments. Those are the

rare moments when the Spirit guides youto do or say just the right thing. When wecan experience Gods grace and love innew and wonderful ways, even in the midstof stress, trial and difficulty.

One Christmas at the church I servedin Dallas, we had an Advent celebrationinviting many members of our communityto worship with us in our sanctuary. We

were singing Christmas carols and ourchoir was going to do a few big pieces. It was going to be topped off by aninspirational message from a celebratedlocal pastor. Our music minister was incharge of the event, so I was free to be aperson in the pew.

As the event started I looked aroundfor the guest minister, but didnt seehim. I wondered if he was going to bethere and who would be delivering themessage. At the appropriate time in theservice, our music minister stood up andsaid, Our guest minister for the day hadan emergency, so the message will be
