It’s an honor to be serving once again as the chamber’s chair. I’ve been involved with this fine organization since its inception

and had the pleasure of serving as chairman in 2006. The chamber has continued to flourish and grow since I last held the gavel, and I look forward to a dynamic 2012.

It will be an exciting year:Results of our latest survey will be an-

nounced at the Annual Awards Dinner on March 23. The Chaldean Household Survey offered a fascinating look into the entrepreneurial nature of Michigan’s Chaldeans in 2007. This new sur-vey, being conducted by Walsh College and Data Driven Detroit, will go even further with details on our thriving business community.

We all know that getting around Metro Detroit without a car is virtually impossible. The new Chaldean Loan Fund addresses that reality by helping refugees finance a vehicle so they can become self-sustaining members of society.

Another vital subsidiary, the Detroit Independent Grocers, is taking a proactive stance for 2012 to debunk the myth that Detroit is underserved with food stores. We visited each and every independent grocer to see first-hand the abundant array of supermarkets in the city. Our new website, MyDetroit-Grocers.com, gives a virtual tour of these stores complete with descriptions, photographs and the number of jobs they provide.

CASCA (The Chaldean Assyrian Syriac Council of America) continues to advocate for Christians and other religious minorities in Iraq. Real progress is being made on the Nineveh Plains plan, which would make the province a home for Christians and other religious minorities.

The Chaldean Community Foundation continues to make great strides in helping the needy. In particular, we serve the unfortunate victims of the Iraq War — refugees who were forced to flee their homeland in the face of religious persecution. The Refugee Acculturation and Sustainability Training (RAST) program in Sterling Heights has just moved into expanded space to better serve its many clients. The Mental Health Program continues to offer a psychological lifeline to the many refugees who suffered untold trauma during the war.

Membership continues to be our lifeblood. Please use this directory to keep in touch with your fellow members and make them your first choice when seeking products and services.

As we continue to see small signs of hope for the economy both nationally and statewide, we are committed to helping

members thrive and grow your bottom line. Two thousand and twelve will certainly

be an interesting year, particularly with the presidential election coming in November. We at the chamber are closely following the news as the Republicans slug it out over their party’s nomination and President Barack Obama makes his case for another term. The chamber PAC is energized to champion candidates — on the local and state level — who support small businesses and issues that affect our battered community in Iraq.

Speaking of which, our affiliate CASCA (Chaldean Assyrian Syriac Council of America) continues to monitor the situation in Iraq. Now that U.S. troops are gone, the fate of Christians and other religious minorities is more perilous than ever. CASCA continues to advocate for these vulnerable groups both in Washington, DC and in Iraq through the establishment of the Nineveh Plains Province.

The Chaldean Community Foundation, the chamber’s charitable arm, had a remarkable year serving the less fortunate, particularly Chaldean refugees fleeing religious persecution in Iraq. The Mental Health Services grant helped more than 400 people recover from the trauma of war and resettlement and adjust to their new life in Michigan.

The Refugee Acculturation and Sustainability Training program outgrew its office space in just its first year and has now doubled its facility in the same shopping plaza in Sterling Heights. The program helped 4,000 people last year with everything from obtaining Green Cards to finding a place to live and work. In 2012, we will continue these services while focusing on three programs: long-term housing solutions, job placement and the Chaldean Loan Fund, which will offer micro-loans to allow newcomers to buy cars – a vital need for independence and self-sufficiency.

While we continue to work with our affiliate organizations, we keep our eye on the prize – serving our members and growing the chamber. This year we have the goal of surpassing 1,000 members. We pledge to build upon the success of last year’s events, focus on ways to educate and assist our members, and highlight the many contributions Chaldeans make to Michigan.

CHALDEAN COMMUNiTy fOUNDATiONThe chamber is proud of its charitable arm, the Chaldean Community Foundation, which continues to grow every year. Here are some of our major programs.

RASTThe Refugee Acculturation Sustainability and Training (RAST) program, funded by a $400,000 grant from the State of Michigan Department of Community Health, runs on the principle of “teaching a man to fish.” While newly arrived refugees are in great need of government services, this assistance only lasts for a limited time. It is essential for these newcomers to learn how to fend for themselves in order to lead a successful life in America.

The need for this program is obvious. The RAST office opened in Sterling Heights in February 2011 and due to the seemingly

never-ending demand, quickly outgrew its space. In early 2012 RAST doubled its facility in the same shopping plaza, located in the heart of the refugee population in Sterling Heights.

The goal is to help refugees of the Iraq war and the religious persecution that fol-lowed to assimilate to their new country. RAST helps the newcomers become less dependent on federal and state subsidies and services.

Former CACC board member Sharon Hannawa heads the RAST program and is helped by five full-time case workers.

In 2011, RAST helped an astound-ing 4,000 refugees with everything from obtaining a Green Card to finding a job to learning English.

The RAST office is also home to two staff members from Project Bismutha, an initiative of the Chaldean American As-sociation for Health Professionals, which provides health care to the needy. Project Bismutha helped more than 200 patients in 2011.

Mental Health ProgramImagine fleeing the only home you’ve ever known with just the clothes on your back, forced to leave your homeland and start over in a new country. That is the sad fate of hun-dreds of thousands of Iraqi Christians who have faced heartbreaking religious persecu-tion at the hands of Islamic fundamentalists.

The Chaldean Community Foundation has partnered with St. John’s Eastwood Clin-ics since 2008 to deliver the best treatment available to refugees. Many languished for years in countries like Jordan, Lebanon and Syria, unable to work or send their children to school, before getting permission to come to the United States. Once here, they face a bewildering new culture and, more often than not, serious financial difficulties.

The Mental Health Program offers a lifeline to these traumatized individuals. One-on-one counseling with translation from Chaldean and/or Arabic is provided at no charge. The service includes transporta-tion for those who lack their own vehicle. In 2011, more than 400 patients were seen in the Mental Health Program. We also added a staff member to work full-time at St. John’s Eastwood Clinic facilitating operations there.

Waad Murad Advocacy FundSince the late 1960s, more than 100 Chal-deans have been killed at their place of busi-ness, mostly during robberies. The Chaldean Chamber has established the Waad Murad Advocacy Fund to supply reward money with Crime Stoppers to facilitate solving these crimes. The goal is to put the perpetrators of violent crime behind bars, and to give the family a sense of closure and justice.

Cultural Competency TrainingInterested parties learn all about Southeast Michigan’s Chaldean American community dur-ing the Cultural Competency Training program. Topics include a brief history, Chaldean culture, faith and language, and the contributions of the community to the United States. The informal presentations include Q&A and discussion. In 2011, we presented Cultural Competency Train-ing to several organizations, including the city government of Sterling Heights.

DETROiT iNDEpENDENT GROCERS Combating the myth that Detroit is a “food desert” is an ongoing challenge for the members of Detroit Independent Grocers. The group was formed in 2008 to provide shoppers the best possible experience and to publicize the fact that independent grocers are the lifeblood of Detroit’s grocery industry.

Nearly all of Detroit’s 80 supermarkets are owned by Chaldeans who offer clean, safe stores. But unscientific, politically motivated studies persist in maintaining that Detroit lacks full-service grocery stores and, as a result, residents are forced to buy their food at liquor stores and corner markets. The fact that Detroit lacks chain stores – many of which fled the city after the riots in the 1960s – is noted as “proof” that fine sources of fresh food do not exist.

The brand-new Detroit Independent Grocers website – MyDetroitGrocers.com – shows the facts, with details and photographs of every full-service market in the city. The number of non-Chaldean employees at each store is included, illustrating that the inde-pendents are also job providers.

THE CHALDEAN CHAMbER pAC The Chaldean community is speaking with a stronger voice in Lansing thanks in large part to the creation of the Chaldean Chamber Political Action Committee. The PAC has become a powerful political tool in enhanc-ing the community’s influence.

The mission of the Chaldean Chamber PAC is to access elected officials who can make important decisions affecting the com-munity. The Chaldean Chamber PAC has supported both Chaldean and non-Chaldean candidates across party lines who are pro-business and sympathetic to the concerns of the Chaldean community.

CHALDEAN ASSyRiAN SyRiAC COUNCiL Of AMERiCA (CASCA)Now that U.S. troops have pulled out of Iraq, the fate of the country’s Christians is still tenu-ous. But some progress was made in 2011 for the establishment of the Nineveh Plain as a

province for Christians and other minorities.The chamber is one of four founding

organizations supporting the Chaldean As-syrian Syriac Council of America (CASCA), formed in June 2007. CASCA is a civic and social welfare organization dedicated to mat-ters of public policy and political purpose for the common benefit of the society of Chaldean Assyrian Syriac people in Dias-pora and those in their indigenous lands in the Middle East.

CASCA works at the federal and state levels to address social and political causes of urgency related to the Chaldean Assyrian Syriac peoples. It promotes and manages a unified voice to support and guide our people in Iraq, working in consultation, coordination and concert with other Chaldean Assyrian Syriac social, civic, business and political organizations and leaders throughout the United States.

In Iraq, Christians and other ethno-religious minorities represent a living heritage that dates back more than 6,700 years. When the Iraq war began, the Christian popula-tion totaled about 1 million. Today it is less than 500,000. According to conservative estimates, at least 50 percent of the Christian population has fled.

Outreach work continues from the cham-ber office in Metro Detroit and in Chicago.

CASCA is chaired by Ismat Karmo, who participated in a mission to Iraq in November 2010. CASCA’s involvement helped achieve agreement between Iraq’s 16 Christian politi-cal parties to work together as one to estab-lish a province in the Nineveh Plains. Such unity is crucial to the plan’s success.

Rochester Hills resident Sam Kassab has been named the Chaldean American Chamber of Commerce’s Businessperson of the Year. “He created his business to serve only one customer, his 7-year-old son Danny,” said state Sen. James Marleau, R-Lake Orion, who congratulated Kassab Friday night as the award was presented at the organization’s eighth annual awards dinner at Shenandoah Country Club in West Bloomfield Township.

Danny Kassab was left a quadriplegic and required around-the-clock medical care after being struck by a car while crossing the street to go to Vacation Bible School in 1993. Unable to find quality care for Danny, Kassab started his own home health care company, Guardian Angel Health Care, with his first employees being the nurses who saved Danny’s life that tragic night. His goal was to provide top quality, affordable care to patients with special needs. The business began to grow as Kassab’s emphasis on personal treatment resonated with people. Today, Guardian Angel Health Care has expanded into home care, hospice, medical equipment, rehabilitation and transportation services and has 15 offices located in six states. Unfortunately, Danny Kassab passed away two years ago. There is a charity set up in his honor, the DMAN Foundation, whose goal is to provide life experiences to the physically and mentally impaired. The charity is run by one of Kassab’s other sons, Ziad, Danny’s older brother. The chamber and its affiliates continued to be newsmakers in 2011. Local newspapers and the electronic media ran many articles about the chamber’s activities, advocacy and events.

STERLING HEIGHTS — It can be as evident as lacking a job or housing, or as subtle as struggling to differentiate between crucial documents and junk mail. The challenges recent immigrants face often continue long after refugees’ eight months of federal assistance ends.

That’s when the Chaldean Community Foundation hopes to intervene. The foundation, the nonprofit arm of the Southfield-based Chaldean American Chamber of Commerce, recently expanded into a satellite office in Sterling Heights to better address the swelling ranks of Iraqi refugees in the area. “Since we opened in March, we’ve probably had well over 200 people go through our doors needing some type of assistance,” said Sharon Hannawa, program manager for the foundation’s Refugee Acculturation Sustainability and Training Program. Martin Manna, executive director of both the chamber and the foundation, said he’s been told by various agencies to expect an additional 10,000 refugees this year and next, a significant portion of whom are expected to settle in the Sterling Heights area. “We’re going to have a large influx continue to come,” he said, “so we wanted to be in a location where we could best service them.”

As many new immigrants lack transportation, the Sterling location, in a strip mall at 15 Mile and Ryan, near a development that houses many refugees, allows them to visit on foot, said Hannawa. Funds raised during the Chaldean Festival in Southfield in June and an annual golf outing primarily prop up the foundation, she said. The organization also receives funds from the Michigan Department of Community Health for a mental health initiative in partnership with St. John Eastwood Clinics, she added.

“A lot of these refugees suffer great trauma from the war in Iraq,” said Hannawa. “With this particular program, we’re able to offer them assistance, as far as being able to meet with a therapist, transportation and medications.”

Additional funding from the MDCH supports the Refugee Acculturation Sustainability and Training Program, helmed by Hannawa and run out of the Sterling site. RAFT’s goal “is to help the refugees to assimilate, and become less dependent on federal and state subsidies and services,” she said.

celebrate the annual Chaldean

Festival featuring a weekend of

Chaldean food, music and culture

from Friday, June 10 through Sunday,

June 12. The North American Midway has

partnered with the Chaldean

Community Foundation to co-host the

festival at the Southfield Civic Center.

The festival will be open from 4 p.m.

to 10 p.m. Friday and noon to 10 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday.

“It gives people a chance to come and learn about Chaldean culture and history. All the music is

in Aramaic — the language that Chaldeans speak,” said Paul Alraihaini, finance manager of the

Chaldean Chamber and the Chaldean Community Foundation.

The festival will feature a full carnival with amusement park rides and games.

There will also be additional attractions such as food booths, live entertainment, merchant

booths and an expanded cultural tent displaying Chaldean culture and art like paintings and

sculptures.

Food booths include restaurants such as CK Mediterranean Grille,

Happy’s Pizza and La Feast.

The festival is also working with the City of Southfield to

reinvigorate the Jazz Festival, last held in 2009, by making Friday a jazz night, according to a

news release.

“With an expected 10,000 additional Chaldean refugees coming to Michigan over the next year,

our annual Chaldean Festival is an opportunity to show metro Detroit who we are, as a

community,” said Martin Manna, executive director, Chaldean American Chamber of

Commerce. Thirty- to 50,000 people are expected to attend the festival throughout the three days.

“Chaldean entertainers, businesses and food vendors all participate, offering a look at our

culture as well as contributions to southeast Michigan’s business community,” Manna said.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Chaldean Community Foundation, a nonprofit

charitable organization.

Special guests included: Andrew Arena, Special Agent in Charge of the Detroit Division of the FBI; Barbara McQuade, Eastern District of Michigan U.S. Attorney; Roderick Blanchard, Port Director for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection; and Mick Dedvukaj, District Director, USCIS, U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

fEbRUARyPlanterra’s gorgeous greenery was the scenic backdrop for the February 3 Quarterly Net-working Meeting. The event in West Bloom-field attracted more than 150 members – all of whom, undoubtedly, were left with a deep yearning for springtime.

The chamber was pleased to educate of-ficials in Sterling Heights on the Chaldean com-munity during a Cultural Competency Training

session. Already home to many Chaldeans, Sterling Heights is seeing a great influx of refugees. Cultural Competency Training offers a comprehensive overview of the Chaldean com-munity, including its history, language, faith, traditions and contributions to Michigan.

February’s Member of Member mailing included 24 companies offering special deals to their fellow chamber members. This low-cost marketing tool has become one of the chamber’s most popular promotions.

MARCHDeborah Meyer, senior vice president and chief marketing officer for the Pulte Group, was the special guest at our Meet the CEO se-ries on March 22. She met with chamber and community leaders at Shenandoah Country Club to learn more about the Chaldean com-munity and share Pulte’s vision for Michigan.

The Eighth Annual Awards Dinner on March 25 was once again a sellout with nearly 900 people gathering at Shenandoah Country Club. Governor Rick Snyder made

the keynote address and, earlier that evening, attended a private reception with commu-nity leaders and county executive L. Brooks Patterson (Oakland), Robert Ficano (Wayne) and Mark Hackel (Macomb).

“I have to say thank you to the Chaldean community for your contributions to the state and for being the awesome people you are,” said the governor. “When I think of the Chaldean community, I think of these five words: welcoming, entrepreneurial, chari-table, positive and family.”

Sam Kassab of Guardian Angel Home Health Care was honored as Business Per-son of the Year; the Chaldean Voice radio program was named Humanitarians of the Year; and special tribute was paid to Bishop Ibrahim Ibrahim.

MAyThe second annual Chaldean American Day was celebrated at the State Capitol in Lansing on May 26. The chamber sent a busload (sponsored by DTE Energy) of community members to watch the presentation of resolu-tions on both the Michigan House and Senate floors. We also hosted a tasty Middle Eastern lunch for the legislators and their staffers.

JUNEThe Sixth Annual Chaldean Festival on June 10-12, held once again at the Southfield Civic Center, was a big success with record-breaking crowds – despite the less-than-stellar weather. Proceeds benefitted the Chaldean Community Foundation, the chamber’s charitable arm.

The weather wasn’t much better at the Eighth Annual Golf Outing on June 23, but that didn’t stop a sell-out field of golfers from enjoying a day of competition and camarade-rie, followed by dinner and a lively auction, all at Shenandoah.

The busy month ended with participation

at a June 25 luncheon with Iraqi Parliament leader Osama Al-Nujaifi. The Chaldean Federation of America hosted the event at Shenandoah, in which Al-Nujaifi discussed the status of efforts to rebuild Iraq. Some were disappointed in Al-Nujaifi’s lack of en-thusiasm for protecting the rights of religious minorities in Iraq.

JULyWe joined forces with the Greater Farm-ington Area Chamber to host the July 27 Quarterly Networking Meeting. The Oakland Chamber Network event was held at the Courtyard by Marriott in Farmington Hills.

AUGUSTSpeaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) dropped by Shenandoah on August 11 to meet with more than 30 community and civic leaders. Boehner learned about the plight of Iraq’s Christians and asked Michigan Congresswoman Candice Miller to keep him

informed on the situation. Michigan Lieutenant Governor Brian

Calley visited the chamber office on August 17 to meet with members of the Detroit In-dependent Grocers and discuss his views on economic development policy.

Our Meet the CEO series continued on Au-gust 24 with Mike Fezzey, the new president of Huntington Bank’s Southeast Michigan Region. Meet the CEO allows business heavyweights to explain their goals while learning more about the Chaldean business community.

SEpTEMbERMore than 100 attendees greeted Michael A. Finney of the Michigan Economic Develop-ment Corp. for an Industry Outlook event on September 15 at Shenandoah. Finney ex-plained his support of the incentives granted to Whole Foods and Meijer to expand into Detroit, a controversial issue for many of the chamber’s independent grocers.

was a lively moderator for Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson, Detroit Economic Growth Corp. President and CEO George Jackson, and Wayne County Execu-tive Robert Ficano. The looming “severance-gate” scandal attracted hordes of media intent of getting comments from Ficano.
