HELIG Infolit workshop in
July, PACLIC Management
and leadership workshop for
public librarians in July and
IGBIS RDA training in Au-
gust.
The local organizing commit-
tee for the 17th national con-
ference has been formed
and has so far been tasked
to assist with the volunteers
programme, local library
tours, guest and speaker
(VIP) minding, school dona-
tions, cultural activities for
EXPO Pavilion and Gala din-
ner theme.
Since 2016 is election year,
BEC members have been
actively engaged in encour-
aging LIS workers to renew
their membership in order to
participate actively in the
election process. A Call for
the Librarian of the Year
2016 – 2017 Nomination was
issued on 15 June. A call for
the Nomination of Office
Bearers for 2016 – 2018 will
be circulated in July.
We look forward to another
well attended and successful
branch annual general meet-
ing that is scheduled for 26
August at Ethekwini Munici-
pal Library.
This being the branch newslet-
ter first issue for the year 2016,
I extend my greetings and wish
you a good and productive year
2016.
It has been a busy and produc-
tive year thus far. The branch
hosted the National South Afri-
can Library Week launch event
that was held at Sibusisiwe
Hall, Mandeni Municipality on
11 March 2016. It is unfortunate
that due to the violence that
erupted in the area as a result
of service delivery protests the
Deputy Minister of Arts and Cul-
ture was advised not to attend
the event. The negative media
publicity also prevented a num-
ber of the provincial members
of parliament, members of the
local municipal council and key
LIS dignitaries, from attending
and taking part in the pro-
gramme. I wish to express my
gratitude to the members of the
local organizing committee and
branch executive committee
members that made tremen-
dous contributions in an effort to
make this event a success. On
behalf of the SALW LOC and
BEC I also extend our apprecia-
tion to the major sponsors KZN
Provincial Library Services and
Mandeni Municipality.
Four successful branch events
have been hosted, which are:
PACLIC (Book talk and
workshop) that was held
at Msunduzi Public Library
on 07 April;
ICTLIG (Innovations -
Institutions Knowledge
Sharing workshop) that
was held at Msunduzi
Public Library on 21 April;
IGBIS business meeting
that was held at Msunduzi
Public Library on 01 June;
and
Joint HELIG and Durban
University of Technology
Library (Online Journal
Management workshop
that was held at
Coastlands Hotel on 14
June.

2016 South African Library week (SALW) was launched at Sibusisiwe Hall in Mandeni Municipality in the Ilembe District on Friday 11th March.
The theme of this year’s SALW is #libraries4lifelonglearning. The launch was greatly attended by LIASA Members, Mandeni and surrounding
areas schools and public. The launch started with a brief tour to Sundumbili Library.
Bongani Mavuso of Ukhozi FM crazed the audience with his presence as the Programme Director. The launch was opened by Segametsi Molawa,
LIASA President, who encouraged the children who attended the launch to read as reading is important to enhance their creativity, knowledge
and exposure and improve their communication skills. Mandeni Municipality Deputy Mayor Phindile Sishi welcomed the guests and attendants
to Mandeni and expressed the municipality’s gratitude and appreciation for being the host of SALW. Sishi further outlined their 2016 plans of
improving library services to Mandeni community.
Sibusiso Mbhele, an author, transformational speaker, coach and trainer born from two domestic workers emphasised the importance of read-
ing and life-long-learning when he said “a background does not determine one’s future, but lifelong learning and reading can change one’s life”.
Mbhele’s life was changed by a book he bought 14 years ago titled “Up where you belong” which he still refers to time and again to motivate
himself.
Khanyi Dubazane and Nokuthula Ndlovu represented the KZN Department of Education and Arts and Culture respectively. Dubazane assured the
attendees that her department will always prioritize libraries as essential facilities in schools for learners to practice reading from early stage.
Ndlovu said in order to emphasize the importance of libraries for all, her department is expanding libraries to rural and tribal areas with similar
facilities to urban areas in order to standardize library services in the whole of KwaZulu-Natal regardless of geographic area. Department of
Arts and Culture support learning with fun, lifelong learning and libraries for all, said Ndlovu.
DAC Chief Director: Archives and Libraries Ms Nomaza Dingayo presented a message of support from National Department of Arts and Culture.
The guests and attendees were entertained by poetry by
Sifiso Mtolo (Nkunzi yoMthakathi) and Fanele Mkhize, drama
by Mandeni Primary School and Ubuhlebezulubili Primary
School, music by Tugela High School, Mbuyiselo Isicathamiya
group and Kwekwezi Maskandi group.
Segametsi Molawa handed posters on behalf of LIASA to Na-
tional Department of Arts and Culture, KZN Department of
Arts and Culture, KZN Provincial Library, Mandeni Municipali-
ty, National Library of South Africa, UKS, EBSCO and SABINET
as a token of appreciation
for assisting with the organi-
sation of a successful launch.

The Paclig KZN hosted its first event for 2016 at the Bessie Head Library on 07/04/16.
The program was opened with a Keynote address prepared by Mr.Mandla Ntombela and presented by Shanitha Bhim. The presentation provided a very informative overview on Why is branding important for Liasa marketing strategy.
This was followed by presentations on how to get your writings published by Mr Rathebe and Social Cohe-sion in the workplace by Bishop TA Mpanza.
The event also provided a platform for Bishop TA Mpanza to introduce his book “There is Life After the Storm “ to guests. Using library space to assist authors with their book promotions is not intended for the authors’ financial gain but rather as an avenue to inform the public of such work and the Paclig event was such a platform.
The presentations were well received with the audience requesting another opportunity of listening to the presenters.

HELIG ONLINE JOURNAL MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP
LIASA HELIG KZN Branch in collaboration with ASSAF
hosted an informative Online Journal Management Work-
shop at the Coastlands Hotel and Spa (Durban) on the 14
June 2016. Ms Ina Smith (SciELO Planning Manager, Acad-
emy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) facilitated the work-
shop as capacity building initiative for LIASA members.
The workshop created much needed awareness and infor-
mation on online journal management systems; roles and
responsibilities; online journal workflows. Participants were
also given a brief understanding on how to create and design
their own open journal. Good strategies were presented on
embracing Open Access and marketing Open Educational
Resources (OER’s) in higher educational institutions in KZN
as well as collaborating with global OA players such as
SAIDE (www.saide.org.za/open-educational-resources);
OER Africa (www.oerafrica.org ); Open Source
(www.opensource.com); including ASSAF.
The Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) SA is
South Africa’s premier open-access (free to access and free
to publish) searchable full-text journal database in service of
the South African research community. The database covers
a selected collection of peer-reviewed South African scholar-
ly journals and forms an integral part of the SciELO
Brazil project. (acknowledgement from http://
www.scielo.org.za/).
Some of the comments received at the workshop
evaluation were:
It creates awareness and provides a way forward
for implementing OJS
The group discussions and the sharing of ideas
were valuable
Wish the presenter could come to the institutions
to share and provide a way forward to new and
emerging researchers
Absorbing new information presented
This course was informative as a young upcom-
ing researcher, I learnt a lot on publishing in OA
journals and how that will promote and make visi-
ble my profile.
The evaluation responses revealed that 95% of par-
ticipants indicated that the online journal workshop
content was applicable to their job and that the facili-
tator was knowledgeable in the field. Acknowledge-
ment to the Durban University of Technology Library
Management.

Bessie Head Library in conjunction with Msunduzi Municipality and the Library Association of South Africa (LIASA)
organised and hosted Councillor Truman Magubane’s lecture at City Hall on 14th March. The event was planned to
commemorate the South African Library Week which was launched at Sibusisiwe Hall in Mandeni on 11th March under
the theme #libraries4lifelonglearning.
Speakers included Mayor Chris Ndlela, MEC of Health Dr Sibongiseni Dlomo, Former South African President Kgalema
Motlanthe, Mlungisi Magubane (son of Truman Magubane ) on behalf of the family, Siza Radebe LIASA KZN Chair-
man, Provincial Secretary General Mzi Zuma and the man of the moment Councillor Truman Magubane.
Motlanthe, long-term compatriot of Magubane as a keynote
speaker of the event emphasised that museums, libraries
and archives are the agents of social change and transfor-
mation. Therefore he recommended these agents to pre-
serve the vanishing history of the struggle. By preserving
information he said “this symbolic relationship of the librar-
ies and museums will satisfy recreational, informational and
cultural needs of patrons. Therefore these information agen-
cies become advocates of the concept of Lifelong learning
aspired by LIASA in 2016.
Motlanthe also focused on a number of points which are relatively relevant to the catastrophes faced in South Africa and innovation on how to reduce or terminate them espe-cially the opportunities of the youth in the workplace, He stressed that the youth is the future and shall be given oppor-tunities by the older people, to express themselves either practically or psychologically and grow in the workplace. He quoted “The more people grow, the more conservative they become.” And lastly pleaded an end of such attitude.
In closure Concillor Truman Magubane ended his address on a challenging note as he mentioned that humility, hard-
working, selflessness, integrity, loyalty, commitment, unity, teamwork, faith and patience are fundamental necessities
for organisational growth and success.
Before the event began, Kgalema Motlanthe (former President) , Chris Ndlela (Mayor), Dr Sbongiseni Dlomo (KZN Health MEC), Truman Magubane and his family took a picture outside Bessie Head library

BLUEcloud launch was held at the Alan Pittendrigh Library on the Ste-
ve Biko Campus, this event formally launched the start of Library
Week. Together with Universal Knowlegde Systems (UKS), the Library
launched BLUEcloud, the latest in the evolution of SirsiDynix Library
Systems. With BLUEcloud you get a comprehensive, next generation
library service platform. Prof. Ahmed Bawa (Vice Chancellor at DUT)
was the guest speaker at the event. Staff and students were very ex-
cited to download the free Bookmyne app on their smart phones,
which brings the library to the users where ever they are. Bookmyne
allows them to search the DUT catalogue from anywhere 24/7. They
can also renew books, update their profile and place holds. One can
even scan the ISBN of a book in a bookstore before purchasing it, to
check if it is available at any of the 6 DUT libraries. Available for iOS
and Android devices. Students were also very excited to receive free
blue candy floss symbolising the “BLUEcloud”.
DUT staff will be using BLUEcloud Analytics, Central and Cataloguing modules to begin with and are eagerly awaiting the release of the cir-culation module. Exciting times lie ahead for both the staff and stu-dents of DUT and the Library Services department.

KwaZulu-Natal Interest Group for Bibliographic Standards (IGBIS) held its first meeting at Bessie Head Library, Peri-
odicals section on the 1st of June 2016. IGBIS meetings are meant for cataloguing communities to discuss their chal-
lenges in their day to day routine and give support to each other. This meeting was particularly used to refresh cata-
loguers’ skills on Resource Description and Access RDA which is the new cataloguing standards to replace Anglo
American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2) which is a bit out-dated because of the emergence of electronic resources for
library collections. IGBIS KZN Chairperson Judgement Khoza gave the members training on SERIALS. The meeting
was well attended.

ICT Interest Group Seminar
Charlotte Mdlalose
A range of online resources and tools now makes it easier to find and share information. Users also enjoy the ability
to access library materials from anywhere and at any time.
Many librarians are trying to develop innovative ways to adapt and position themselves to meet the new expectations
and demands from users. Rapid changes in the ICT environment place librarians under pressure to keep up-to-date.
The KZN ICT Interest Group hopes to create platforms for librarians to learn from each other about how to use the
power of ICTs to change the delivery of library services. A seminar took place on 21 April this year at Msunduzi Public
Library. Participants came from various public, academic and special libraries.
The team of the KZN ICT Interest Group, Ms Golly Odendaal (Chair) from DAC Library Services and Ms Charlotte
Mdlalose from MUT, plans to organise similar knowledge sharing activities in the future.
Time of the Writer Literature Festival Phumi Myeza
The “Time of the Writer” festival took place from 14 to 19 March 2016 and was launched at UKZN’s Elizabeth Sneddon
Theatre on 14 March. Minister of Arts and Culture Miss Rejoice Mabudafhasi welcomed all authors and guests invit-
ed under the theme “Decolonizing the Book”. The minister acknowledged the importance of libraries, reading and an
informed society.
A few EML libraries, namely Kwa-Mashu, Umkhumbane and Umlazi W, were among venues visited by authors and
writers to discuss literature issues and social and political factors affecting communities. Among the themes of discus-
sions were “Conversations that Matter: The Book and Knowledge dialogue”, “The book and Readership” and “The
Book and Language”.
The council saw the need to increase funding to the UKZN Centre for Creative Arts to engage on a larger scale in the
creative dialogues to encourage literature and nation building as the festival not only attracts local authors and audi-
ences but also international experts.
