NED students participated in the Student Leadership Seminar (SLS) 2011 and won the awards
INTRODUCTION
This year, the Student Leadership Seminar (SLS) organized by the American Society of Mechanical
Engineers (ASME) student chapter was held at Quaid-e-Awam University of Engineering, Science and
Technology (QUEST), Nawabshah on March 17, 2011 and carried out for three days.
ABOUT THE SOCIETY
American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) frequently organizes technical presentations at
district and international level which gives students the opportunity to present their ideas and projects and develops their confidence. The goal of SLS is to provide students, officers and volunteers with the
tools and skills they need to run their respective sections efficiently. Each year, several teams of up to
four students participate in Student Professional Development Conferences in districts worldwide. Winners then proceed to finals at the ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and
Exposition (IMECE). The Student District Operating Board (SDOB) while providing students a platform to
nurture their technical and social skills, gives directions to help make the districts ASME student sections
function as a unit.
EVENT DETAILS
The three day event was divided into three categories with specific objectives which are listed below:
March 17, 2011: Technical Presentations
March 18, 2011: Student Design Competition
March 19, 2011: Selection for the head of Student District Operating Board (SDOB), ASME In ternational
RESUL TS
NED UET students participated and won accolades in all categories.
In the Technical Presentations round, Hassan Kamal from B.E. Mechanical made NEDians proud by securing second position. He gave a presentation on “Concentrated Parabol ic Trough” which is also the subject for his Final Year Project.
In the second category, Student Design Competition, the team of Ahsan and Ramesh Chohan bagged the third position.
In the last category, for selection of the head of Student District Opera ting Board (SDOB), the NED candidate Abdul Wahab
Malik could not get the top spot, but got away with the position of communications in-charge.
Q. Tell us about yourself and your family.
A. I am a simple Muslim with a wife, two daughters and a son living in Munster, Indiana. I
have sent my daughters to Pakistan to study medicine – while son is doing undergraduate at a
local university. When we first arrived in Indiana in 1991 we had approximately five to ten
close families who started on a small project for Mosque and Sunday school. Currently
mashallah we have scores of families with a great community.
Q. Why Engineering?
A. I like Engineering as it provides an analytical set of skills that helps you arrive at quantified
or discrete decision parameters. Coming from a developing country, engineering skill set
allows you to apply and harness economic value differentials in your country as well as provides you with an international
currency that you can utilize elsewhere outside your country.
Q. Which year did you graduate and what was your major?
A. Mechanical Engineering batch of 1975 – graduated in 1977

Q. Tell us about your professional life?
A. After graduating I worked for public sector and then for Habib Group in Karachi before leaving for a power plant job in WED
Abu Dhabi. Saved some money to do MS in 1981 from Michigan, Ann Arbor. Started as a Mechanical Engineer in a consulting
firm there. After some time, felt a calling for Pakistan. Served as a Vice President in Bankers Equity – at that time one of the
leading financial institutions. I really enjoyed my time as an engineer dealing with people in finance, accounting and economics.
However, primarily due to security related issues in turbulent Karachi came back to US.
When I returned, my aim was to form a company and thought Consulting Engineering provides a prospective route for people
with my background. After gaining experience and progressing through three consulting engineering firms, I founded
EnerTronics Engineering Corp. in 1995 as a multidisciplinary consulting engineering firm. Originally targeted Steel industry
clients like US Steel and LTV Steel from my previous employers. As the Steel industry declined in 2002, we expanded our
services to serve federal government clients including VA, DOT, DOI, DOT and Navy.
Q. If you had to choose another occupation, what would it be?
A. I love engineering as it provided me personally with best of the tools and satisfaction. However, seriously our new
generation should explore the career that provides them with best prospects and fulfillment over the long run. In a developed
world with technological advances, the value of deterministic professions like traditional engineering decreases continuously if
it is not combined with expository and collaborative skill sets that are really important in a non -discrete spectrum.
Q. Who was your favorite teacher at NED?
A. Dr Firasat Ali
Q. Please recount some of your unforgettable memories while at NED?
A. Waiting for your next turn for the viva exam – while everyone else – besides you - seems to have the right answers!
Q. What are some of your proudest achievements in life?
A. I actually had more follies than achievements. However I felt real good when a Pathan stranger who had lost his son during
an ethnic violence in Karachi stood up and shared his injured looks while I grieved with him as an indebted Muhajir.
Q. What do you like best about NEDEA?
A. A great group of people who really are on an upswing as every year is better than the previous.
Q. What do you like to do in your spare time?
A. Iqbal, Munni Begum, Google, Seinfeld and Football.
Q. Describe your perfect day?
A. Still exploring … Bahot niklay mere arman – laikin phir bhi kum nilklay.
Q. What is something about you that might surprise most people?
A. I hide my enjoyments at office behind the veneer of overworking.
Q. Favorite food
A. A Sindheri mango
Q. What is your favorite word?
A. Rehman
Q. What is your least favorite word?
A. Not one but two words: Tabarrah & Bidaat
Q. What advice can you give to our readers?
A. I am always seeking advice from others especially from distinguished groups that has excelled in their country and is
exploring new frontiers. Just one request, remember and cheri sh the zeal in your eyes when entering NED first time and
sustain it for the next generations.

1. Call to order
a. The meeting was called to order at 9:30 am by Rashid Ahmed.
2. Approval of Meeting Minutes #9 a. Minutes of the meeting #9 was reviewed. A motion to accept the minutes was made by Shahid seconded by Bilal and
the motion passed.
3. NEDEA Picnic a. Board agreed that the picnic event went well. People were happy. There was no shortage of food. Selling of food was a
good idea.
b. Rashid and Shahid need to send the receipts of picnic purchase to Bilal.
c. Shahid will forward all the pictures to Rashid to include them in the August newsletter.
4. NEDEA Iftar – August 27, 2011
a. The NEDEA Iftar will be on Saturday, August 27, 2011, at Shahi Nehari, Lombard. The capacity of the hall is about 100
people. b. We will open the registration and networking session at 7:00 pm. The Iftar time will be around 7:35 pm.
c. It was decided that if our sponsorship covers all the cost, we will not charge from members and their family. The non-
members price will be $20 per person. d. We need to raise $2,000 through sponsorship to cover the iftar expenses. Rashid will forward a list of potential donors.
All Board members need to contact their friends in the NEDEA members’ list to raise the money for Iftar.
e. Since we will be only two days away from the Eid, it was decided that we will arrange the Mehndi service for ladies and
girls. The Mehndi service is available @$75 per hour and needs to be booked for a minimum of 2 hours. There was discussion on whether the Mehndi should be applied on both hands or just one hand because of the time restriction.
Also, should there be a charge for Mehndi service? One suggestion was that NEDEA will pay for one hand and members
pay for the other hand. Again, the final decision will be based on funding.
5. Next Meeting
a. No date was set for the next meeting; however, it is expected in the middle of August.
6. Meeting Adjournment a. Meeting adjourned at 10:30 am
