Chairman’sCOLUMN

This year promises to be yet another exciting year for our young Scouts as this newsletter explains.

For many lucky Venturers and Leaders from all over the country, the year started with a bang with ten days of amazing adventures in the southernmost part of our country. There was plenty of excitement and amazing adventures at the 15th Australian Venture, Wild Dayz, held in Tasmania.

Venturer Jake Picken from South Australia, who received financial support from the Society to attend the Venture, shares his experiences with us, describing an extra challenge he faced and how teamwork saved the day. Jake is truly thankful for the opportunity you have provided him.

Also in this newsletter, Chief Commissioner Reg Williams RFD and member of the Lord Baden-Powell Society, shows his environmental leadership skills in the community and proves he’s not afraid to get his hands dirty.

All across the country, young Scouts are diligently planning and making preparations for the upcoming Australian Jamboree in Queensland in January 2013. For most it will be their very first Jamboree, promising to be one of the greatest events of their young lives and the culmination of years of hard work and effort.

However there are some less fortunate young people who may not have the opportunity to attend due to these difficult and uncertain economic times. The Lord Baden-Powell Society is hoping to raise enough funds to assist 250 young Australian Scouts attend AJ2013. With just 6 months remaining our target is in sight, so please dig deep and support our annual Jamboree Appeal to make a difference to so many young lives.

A big welcome to Maggie Burke who replaces Tracy Bradley as Manager of the Society. We look forward to working with her. Many thanks to Tracy for her significant contribution to the development of the Society during her 3 years with us.

Wild Dayz - the 15th Australian Venture, was recently held in Launceston, Tasmania, spanning 10 days from 3 - 14 January 2012 and had 1500 participants who attended from all over Australia and around the world.

The action packed 10 days began on the evening of 3 January with the Opening Ceremony inaugurated by the Governor of Tasmania. 4 January involved a series of very exciting on-site activities like fencing, medieval battles, circus skills, abseiling, laser skirmish, motorised go-karts, movies, mechanical bull, BMX Funbox, and even beach volleyball.

Preparations for the expeditions began the following day and consisted of four and a half days of exciting off-site expeditions. Activities included hikes through the magnificent Tasmanian scenery, caving, kayaking, white water rafting, sailing in multi-mastered tall ships and ocean racing yachts, abseiling, four wheel driving, horse riding, touring through the sites of the West and North Coast, learning to surf and much more.

According to Andrew Millen, NSW Contingent Leader, “There was a range of fun expeditions that the Venturers and Leaders really enjoyed, including sailing on two of the Sydney to Hobart yachts, horse riding and even four-wheel driving.”

The final four days back at the Venture site were filled with recovering from the off-site expeditions, more of the on-site activities and a new batch of off-site activities, as well as on-site night time activities. Mr Millen said, “There was always something to do - even wash their clothes!”

Jamboree Fund UpdateAll over the country thousands of Scouts and Leaders are busy making preparations for the 23rd Australian Jamboree (AJ2013) taking place in sunny and picturesque Maryborough in January next year. For many, this will be an experience of a lifetime.

With just eight months until the opening ceremony launches, the program team is putting in endless hours behind the scenes to ensure a seamless event that involves six On-site Activity Zones and four Off-site activities, night activities as well as amazing evening entertainment in a custom built Arena!

The Society has set an ambitious target of assisting 250 Scouts financially so they will be able to attend the Jamboree in Queensland next January.

The appeal has raised just over $100,000 in the last two years, thanks to your generosity. We are very close to achieving our desired target and this year we need to inject the last $50,000 to enable us to send all 250 Scouts in need to the Jamboree. So please donate today and remember all donations are tax deductible and greatly appreciated.

Chief Commissioner of Tasmania, Mike Patten had praise for everyone who helped out. He said,”Wild Dayz was a great success with everyone full of praise for how smoothly it all ran, the amazing variety and range of activities along wiith the high quality of the expeditions. For those who helped, January was flat out but Tasmanians can all be proud of the fact that once again we have put on a high quality event.”

Wild Dayz drew to a close on 14 January and according to Andrew Millen, it was a huge success. He said,” Everyone had a fantastic time and didn’t want to go home. There is already talk about the next Venture in South Australia in 2015!”

Wild Dayz included 996 Venturers and Guides from around Australia, New Zealand, UK, Timor-Leste and Saudi Arabia with a further 500 Leaders, Rovers and Supporters, including a Rover from France, who worked tirelessly to make this event happen.

Returning to Base Camp…After our adventures at the southern most point of Tasmania, we headed back to base camp. During the next five days, I explored Launceston , went caving, and the final day I went out white water rafting. These days are some amazing times that I had, which I will never forget.

Heading South ...Two days later every one of the Venturers repacked their tents and loaded onto buses to travel all over the state for their expedition . I was lucky enough to be put on the southern extreme tour. This included amazing activities - abseiling, mountain bike riding, sea kayaking, bush walking and caving. Abseiling came with a bit of a surprise for us!

Day 1 After check-in we went our different ways to find our units and meet who we would be spending the next ten days with . As luck would have it, my camping ground was at the far corner of the whole camp site . With my tent set up, after I had met my new family for the next two weeks, it was time for tea. Once the whole campsite had arrived, it was time for the opening ceremony.

Yours in Scouting,Jake Picken

This January, I was fortunate enough to be one of a hundred brave and proud Venturer’s able to attend the 15th Australian Venture, Wild Dayz, in Launceston. These days are some of the most amazing times that I have ever had, which I will never forget. I’ve made lifelong friends from all around the world and hope to keep in contact with them.

At the bottom of this wonderful cliff face was a pile of rubbish that had just been dumped over the edge . So as a team we innovatively set up a pulley and sling to lift the rubbish up to the top and dispose of it to a place that it should be. It took 18 Venturers three hours to clean the site, but every one of us was extremely proud of what we had achieved.

Report From Jake PickenLord Baden Powell Society Grant Recipient

I would like to thank the Lord Baden Powell Society for their generous grant so that I could attend such a life changing event. I have made so many memories and friends from this venture . Once again thank you.

Scouting Develops Leaders of Today...And Tomorrow

Leadership is defined by Wikipedia as the “process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of other people in the accomplishment of a common task...organizing a group of people to achieve a common goal”. The leader may or may not have any formal authority. Theories state that leaders often have traits like situational interaction, function, behaviour, power, vision and values, charisma, and intelligence, among others.

Leadership has always been an important part of the Scouting Movement. The aim of Scouting is to focus on encouraging the physical, intellectual, emotional as well as social and spiritual development of young people so they take a constructive place in society as a member of their local and international community.

Some of the world’s most successful people today were once Scouts. Over the last 100 years, Scouting has shaped the lives of millions of individuals worldwide and these individuals have found ways to make their mark in society. Most of them credit their past involvement in Scouts as an important part in their success. Examples of leaders in Australia who attribute their huge success to Scouting are Dick Smith AO, prominent businessman,

Heather, a First Albion Park Scout Group Member, was presented with this award during Shellharbour City Council’s Australia Day ceremony (2012). Heather, in keeping with the Scout Promise of helping others, began to volunteer at 15 years, working with young people. Her brother who turns 20 years, struggles with many other conditions besides autism.“I used to (think) I was in a bad position, (but) now I see we’re better off than a lot of others” said Heather.

However it is not just famous people who have been inspired by Scouts to be leaders. 17 year old Scout, Heather Divine, was named the Shellharbour City Council’s 2012 Young Citizen of the Year, for her leadership role doing volunteer respite work at the Interchange Illawarra for children with autism.

Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Cambridge is Scouts United Kingdom’s newest volunteer and will help at young Beaver Scout Colonies (6-8 year olds) and Cub Scout Packs (8-10½ year olds) close to the area she is living in.

After spending some time considering different types of organisations, The Duchess

has chosen to volunteer with Scouts United Kingdom because she was so impressed by the huge impact Scouting has on young people and the community.

The launch was attended by 150 people representing all levels of Government as well all local Environmental agencies and supporters. Various Community and Scouting Leaders were also present.

Reg Williams opened the Nature Trail with National Adviser for Environment, Gus Lloyd MRIANZ beside him. One of the Scout Laws, ‘A Scout Cares for the Environment’, is an important tenet of the Scouting Movement. The Nature Trail was a key step in adhering to this law.

Chief Commissioner Not Afraid to Get Hands Dirty

The Chief Commissioner of Scouts Australia and Lord Baden-Powell Society member, Reg Williams RFD, recently launched Stage 1 of the Nature Trail at Ingleside Scout Environment Camp.

This Nature Trail will provide benefit and enjoyment to the Ingleside community for generations to come and is an important Environmental initiative by Scouts Australia.

What did You Learn In Scouting?

Book Scouting for Boys, fourth bestselling book of the 20th Century and which was 104 years old on the day. David was asked what he learnt in Scouts that helped today. He replied:

David W. Jones AM FCAChairman, National Executive Committee of Scouts Australia and Lord Baden-Powell Society Committee Member had a brief interview a few weeks ago with ABC Regional Station in order to celebrate Lord Baden-Powell’s

Timor-Leste Venturers attend Wild Dayz

“Well it is funny you should ask that question, so let me tell you a short story...Two nights ago while driving home, I noticed an elderly man, laying on the ground, face down. He was not moving. I jumped out of my car and ran to him. I realised he had tripped and fallen onto his face, breaking his nose and severely cutting his face. Immediately my Scout First Aid training came back to me. Using skills I had learnt as a boy in Scouting, I was able to ascertain that he had not done any other damage, after checking his arms, legs, back and neck. With the help of another passerby, I was able to get him upright and look after him, till an ambulance arrived.

What I learnt in Scouting helped me that day. That’s why we say, ‘Scouting is an education for life’.”

Support for the growth and development of Scouting in Timor-Leste remains a high priority international project. Our first Australian Youth Ambassador for Development (AYAD), Kathy Radoslovich, has now returned to Adelaide, to resume her university studies. Kathy is complimented on the great work she did whilst with Uniao Nacional Dos Escuteiros De Timor-Leste (UNE-TL), the Scout Association of Timor-Leste.

The Chief Commissioner of Australia, Reg Williams RFD has awarded Kathy the “Chief Commissioner’s Commendation”. The Timor-Leste Ambassador to Australia, Abel Guterres, has also written to Kathy on behalf of the government and people of his country congratulating her on her achievements.

A second AYAD will commence work with UNE-TL in July and focus on developing a national youth program and enhancing communications throughout the organisation.

Contributing to developing closer ties, four Timor-Leste Venturers were given the opportunity to attend the 15th Australian Venture (Wild Dayz) in Tasmania in January. These young people were truly appreciative for the experience.
