Mohan [email protected] Blog: http://infoforuse.blogspot.com Dear Members Wish you all a very happy and prosperous 2013. I hope the New Year has dawned on all of us brightly. I am already seeing a flurry of activity from our student branches and institutions who, after resuming from the year-end holidays, are organizing a number of events such as conferences and branch level activities. Their vibrancy and enthusiasm is infectious and inspiring. Based on my experience as Chair during the past year, I have compiled a wish list of what I think we must attempt to improve on the member experience of IEEE. a. IEEE is for all. Not just one branch of engineering that has taken initiative to create the student branch through a petition. Every branch of engineering (and other faculties listed as eligible for membership of IEEE) can gain enormously by participating in IEEE activities. I would like to see all faculties and branches of an institution represented in the Student Branch of that Institute. As an association at the cutting and bleeding edge of technology, it is our responsibility to embrace all faculties to share and gain from each other in a mutually beneficial and sustainable manner. b. IEEE events – projects, conferences, programs etc. must be multidisciplinary in nature. IEEE Ocean Engineering Society conducts an annual project on autonomous underwater vehicles – where I found students from civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics, ECE, CSE all coming together to work on the prototype. This is true collaboration. Only when we encourage different disciplines to collaborate can we develop solutions for the society at large in the true spirit of IEEE’s Mission – Advancing Technology for Humanity. c. IEEE membership must provide differentiation – In western nations, an IEEE membership distinguishes an individual from the crowd. It is automatically assumed that an IEEE member has more awareness of latest developments in his / her field, is better qualified, is inclined to voluntarily contribute to his / her community and society and finally has a great network of support. Therefore, all things being equal, an IEEE member is preferable over others. This has to happen in our country too and soon. As we begin the New Year, all of us are already thinking of how best we can enhance the member experience of IEEE. I would encourage each one of you to help us by sharing your feedback and views on what the section can do to improve the member experience of IEEE. The dream of powered airplane only bythe sun’s energy has long motivated scientistsand hobbyists. The concept of the solar airplaneis quite simple which is equipped with solarcells covering its wing, retrieves energy fromthe sun in order to supply power to thepropulsion system and the control electronics, and charge the battery with the surplus ofenergy.

An aircraft, even if it is unmanned and itcarries a small payload, may have applicationssuch as atmospheric monitoring, communications, and reconnaissance. A fundamental problem isto determine the conditions under which theaircraft should be determine the conditionsunder which the aircraft should be flown sothat the ratio of potential energy stored to energyproduced by the motor is a maximum.

The simplest flight plan for a solar-powered aircraft is to maintain constant altitude. The amount of solar energy received by theaircraft depends on the length of day, theattenuation of the solar energy by theatmosphere (the so-called “air mass effect”),and the relative angle between the Sun’s raysand collector.

A solar-powered aircraft must fly abovethe altitude reached by clouds, which is usuallyaround 14 km. Today, the highest energy ratiofor rechargeable battery is around 200 Wh/kgfor Lithium Polymer technology which provideshigher capacity, greater operational time, lighterweight, wider operating temperature range andgreater cycle life than other technologies. Theminiaturization of fuel cells will also make themsuitable for small solar UAVs.

Figure 1 Solar powered aircraft

Design features may be incorporated tomaintain the solar collector normal to the Sun’s

Solar Powered Aircraft rays. The variable features are the Aspect ratio,Wingspan and Total mass. An energy storagesystem with three to five times the specificenergy capacity of that assumed for rechargeablebatteries (72800 to 121000 J/N) would beadequate and would make a solar-poweredaircraft practical. The assumed specific powerof the motor, 168 W/N, is high for currenttechnology, particularly if the weight of thegearing and propeller is included with the motor.

Mach number is a dimensionless quantityrepresenting the ratio of speed of an objectmoving through a fluid and the local speed ofsound. During the data-gathering portion of theflight, the flight-test plan may call for the aircraftto exceed the Mach number (most likely atreduced lift coefficients). The result of exceedingMach could be a large loss of lift and acorresponding loss of altitude. The Reynoldsnumber Re is a dimensionless number that givesa measure of the ratio of inertial forces to viscousforces .The Reynolds number expresses the ratioof inertial (resistant to change or motion) forcesto viscous (heavy and gluey) forces. As Reynoldsnumber is proportional to free stream velocity, the low wind speed flows corresponds to lowReynolds number at which the airfoils generateless lift and higher drags. A low ReynoldsNumber gives laminar flow while a highReynolds Number gives turbulent flow. As yougo up in altitude, the density of the air decreases.Because of the lower temperatures, the viscosityincreases. All this only slightly changes theReynolds Number.

The values of total energy for 24 hr offlight form the basis for the calculations of solar-cell area and battery weight. Total energyincreases as the square root of the wing loadingand increases linearly with drag coefficient.Because the energy varies inversely as the squareroot of the air density, the energy requiredincreases rapidly with increasing altitude. Theratio of the weight of solar cells to total weightvaries as the square root of the wing loading andis always much less than 1.0 over the range ofwing loading up to 100 N/m2. Therefore, theweight of solar cells does not place a limitationon the feasibility of the aircraft, even with valuesrepresentative of current technology. Area ofsolar cells required, varies as the 3/2 power ofthe wing loading. A solar-cell area equal to thewing area appears to be a reasonable upper limitwithout unduly compromising the aerodynamicor structural design.

The ratio of motor weight to total weightfor level flight is less than 0.05 for all conditions

in night. The motor weight required does notdepend on the length of the night. The ratio ofbattery weight to total weight which assumes abattery capable of providing 24 278 J/N in thedischarge cycle, exceeds 1.0 for all except thelighter wing loadings and lowest altitudes.Current rechargeable batteries therefore place alimit on the feasibility of solar powered aircraft.Projected improvements in energy-storagesystems using different approaches such ashydrogen-oxygen fuel cells give promise ofreduction in weight by a factor of 10. The batteryweight for a system is capable of providing242780 J/N. The Influence of Technologies onthe feasibility are considerations about batterytechnology, considerations about airplanestructure.

Regions of the feasible conditions can bedetermined from design parameters. Thepossible limiting actors are:

• Airspeed equals the wind speed.

• Ratio of solar-cell area to wing area equals1.0.

• The sum of weights of the componentsequals the total weight corresponding toa given wing loading.

• Mach number is sufficiently low to avoidaerodynamic losses.

The regions of feasible operations occurin the range of 15 to 30 N/m2. This requirementresults from the premise that the minimumaltitude should be above the clouds and abovethe altitude at which the wind’s velocity is likelyto exceed the airspeed. Rapidly increasingaverage wind velocity and density below about20 km tend to establish this value as a minimumaltitude. One way to maintain the solar cellsnormal to the Sun line is to mount the cells.
