Chairman’s Corner

We are already one month into the 2015 Financial Year and by the time you read this, the first weekend of hockey

fixtures will be only days away. What happened to summer?

The marketing strategy working group held their first meeting on Monday 31 March and will be working closely

with the Club Office and the Committee structures of the Club to develop a marketing strategy for the Club over the

next couple of months

We are in the process of preparing the Club’s Annual Financial Statements (the audit has already been completed)

and the Club’s financial position is looking encouraging, although there are still a number of risk areas that the

Committee and the Club Office are monitoring closely.

When I attended my 25 year school reunion in Cape Town I was pleasantly surprised to find out that a classmate of

mine is the Vice Chairman of Western Province Cricket Club and we agreed that representatives of the Club

Management and Committee would fly down to Cape Town in May to meet with representatives from the Western

Province Cricket Club to discuss ways that we (as the two largest multi sport clubs in South Africa) can strengthen

ties between the Clubs and work together to ensure the continued sustainability and enhancement of facilities at

both Clubs.

I have started to hear, third hand rumblings, about service levels and nocturnal parking lot antics, but always long

after the event and the details are rather vague.

If you see something happening, that shouldn’t be, please report it immediately to the Club Duty Manager on 079

883 6520 or to Security on 083 770 0714 so that the necessary corrective action can be taken immediately.

If the service you receive in any of the food and beverage areas is not up to scratch there is no need to call Security,

but please immediately raise the issue with the SilvaSale Duty Manager so that they can resolve the service issue for

you on the spot.

If you are not satisfied with their response, please feel free to contact the Club Duty Manager on 079 883 6520 or

the Club CEO, Darren Dignam.

We, as members, are all custodians of the standards of behavior at our Club and the most appropriate way to ensure

that the standards are maintained is to bring matters to the attention of the responsible Club officials when an

incident occurs, so that it can be rectified immediately.

ExtTThe following is an extract from the Constitution and Rules and Regulations of The Wanderers Club – June 2011 regarding procedures to be followed for committee nominations :

“Please note that all nominations received to serve on the Main Committee must be nominated in writing and proposed and seconded by members in good standing. All persons nominated should also meet all the required criteria of a Main Committee member. No member whose Club subscriptions are unpaid and/or are in arrears shall be eligible as a candidate or be entitled to propose or second a candidate.

All nominations should be delivered to the Club office by not later than the 15th day of April 2014 and the names of the nominees together with the names of the retiring President, Vice-President and retiring members of the Committee shall be posted on the Club notice board at least thirty (30) days before the Annual General Meeting.

If the number of members nominated does not exceed the number to be elected, the members so nominated shall be declared elected by the Chairman at the Annual General Meeting. However, should the number of nominations exceed the number to be elected, the election shall be held at the Annual General Meeting by way of a ballot in which only members entitled to vote may participate. Please note that no proxy votes will be permitted.”

MEMBERS’ LOUNGE USAGE

The Members’ Lounge is intended as a quiet space for relaxation, reading, study, work on computers and

quiet conversation. It is for the exclusive use of Members and their guests and Management reserves the

right to check membership status and ask non-members to vacate the lounge.

The following are NOT permitted in the Members’ Lounge :

1. Large groups or meetings exceeding four (4) people. (The Club has venues which can be booked

for that purpose).

2. The use of the Member’s Lounge as regular free office space to run a business.

3. Audio Visual equipment including projectors and screens.

4. Loud noise of any sort (this includes cell phone usage) and any disturbance to other members.

5. “Reserved” areas, the moving of furniture and lying or sleeping on the furniture.

6. The consumption of snacks or meals (only hot or cold beverages bought at the Club may be

consumed).

Any abuse of these rules should be reported to the Club’s Duty Manager

(Extension 120 or 079 883 6520) for appropriate action

Athletics

JP MORGAN ROAD RACE

Johannesburg opened the 38th year of the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge with a capacity crowd of

13000 entrants from 227 companies.

The 11th annual celebration of corporate fitness and camaraderie at the Wanderers Club served as a benefit

to

the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.

Despite 10 days of nonstop rain and the Wanderers fields ankle deep in water, the event went ahead with the

usual slickness.

The Wanderers Athletics section once again assisted with the start, finish and goody bag handouts, with

their usual enthusiasm.

By hosting events of this nature, we hope to attract new members to the club.

League hockey starts on the weekend of the 5th/6th April. Wanderers have entered 9 teams in the men’s league and

7 teams in the ladies league, same number of teams as in 2013. SGHA have restructured the ladies league and have

reduced Premier league to 8 teams in order to try and strengthen the league and give the smaller clubs an

opportunity to play top class game, and therefore have only allowed the 1st teams in Clubs to participate in the

Premier league. They have added a Reserve league of the next 8 teams on merit and results between the Premier

and 1st league which will cater for the 2nd teams of clubs who are not permitted to play in the Premier league. This

is a very strong league as there are some clubs in Reserve league who would have their 2nd teams in Premier league

on merit if SGHA had not decided to restructure the leagues.

Congratulations to The Wanderers Men’s 1st Team under their new coach’s guidance and expertise they clinched the

Deloitte’s Super Cup at the recent tournament held at the Randburg Astroturf winning the R10K up for grabs. Well

done guys!

Indoor Hockey wrap up -

At the recent Indoor IPT Southern Gauteng men’s and ladies teams did not do well at all. The men came in 6th

position and the ladies were 4th. Unfortunately, not many of our best indoor players in Gauteng made themselves

available for selection.

Petra Anderson who plays and umpires for Wanderers umpired at the Indoor IPT which was held in Durban from

the 27th February until the 1st March. Petra was appointed to umpire a semi-final and the final and received a level 4

award which is the highest grade at a national tournament.

The final was contested between Midlands and KZN Raiders who won the IPT. On the right is the gold medal they

both received.

Hockey

SA Masters to play in Holland -

The SA Masters men are going to Holland to play in the Masters World Cup from the 31st May until the 16th June.

The Tournament takes place in Rotterdam and then they move on to The Hague to watch the open Men’s World

Cup.

The Wanderers hockey section wish our ‘older’ lads well and know they will be having an awesome time!

Junior hockey is up and running and we have had an overwhelming response to our first two weeks of Mini-hockey

registration. Mini-hockey practices are held every Saturday morning from 08h00 until 10h30 at the Wanderers

Astroturf and hockey/cricket oval

Our Colts are under way and due to clashes with school commitments on Tuesday afternoons we have moved the

boys to a Thursday afternoon from 17h30 until 18h30. Girls Colts practices are held on Wednesdays from 17h30

until 18h30

The Cricket season is now almost at the end. Nearly all the Time format leagues are finished, with the exception of the Premier, Presidents and the Sunday 2 league teams having a game left for the season. The Premier and Presidents league teams are on top of their respective Time leagues and very important games left to play. Good luck to these teams for those fixtures on the 5th & 6th April. Item no 1 on the calendar, Egoli League, is behind us and next week will see the start of our annual

Club Championships.

Our basis of compilation of the draw is to enter and record from our membership list all the players

known to the committee as competitive, league or keen to play. So if your name is in the draw and you

do not wish to play you will simply withdraw and your opponent will get a walkover win.

If you wish to participate, however, you must adhere to the times of your matches, or alternatively be

responsible to arrange the completion of your match prior to when you are scheduled to play next. We

will not be extending or changing dates or times due to the non-availability of players.

EGOLI LEAGUE COMPLETED

The EGOLI LEAGUE was enjoyed by all who participated and despite the rainy season we

experienced, was completed within schedule.

We entered 5 mens teams, 1 ladies team, and 2 junior teams. Our Junior A team won their league,

going through the league unbeaten. Congratulations, guys.

All other teams fared well enough not to be relegated from their section.

OUR SA VETS NO 1 PLAYER MISSES HIS CROWN

Oscar Marino was in Durban last week to defend his number 1 seeding position in the Mens Vets

(+70) singles competition. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances he was forced to

withdraw from the main event and the intended defense of his no 1 position.

He did however go on to win the back-draw title and the mens-doubles competition.

GCTA 2013 SPRING LEAGUE RESULTS

Wanderers teams featured successfully in this league which ran over 5 weeks from mid-August to mid-

September 2013. We entered 5 men’s teams and 1 ladies team and they finished as follows:

Team A playing in League1/Section1 - 5th of 6;

Team B playing in League 2/Section5 -2nd of 6;

Team C playing in League 2/Section6 -3rd of 6;

Team D playing in League 2/Section9 -5th of 6;

Team E playing in League 2/Section12 -2nd of 5;

Ladies team A playing in League 2/Section6 -3rd of 6;

The Central Gauteng Snooker Association League fixtures started on the 10th of March 2014, but we

started the season off with the “2014 Johannesburg & Districts” tournament which was played from the

17th to the 27th of February 2014. From the round robin matches it was already clear that this season will

produce some great competitive snooker and we saw some very closely contested matches. It was the

knockout section, however, that produced a few upsets, making for a very interesting tournament.

In the quarter finals Mukesh Dayah played arguably the match of his life, beating former champion Mike

Hines 4-0, while Faraad James played very consistent snooker to beat another former champion in this

event, Hugo Lotriet, 4-3 and setting up a semifinal clash between the two of them. In the other half it was

defending champion Fakhrie Gierdien who set up a semifinal clash with Donovan Milo, who was also

playing snooker of a very high standard. The semifinals produced some good snooker and the lead

changed hands a number of times in both matches, but at the end of the day it was Fakhrie Gierdien and

Faraad James who proceeded to the final.

Faraad put up a brave fight, but in the end it was the experience and skill of the reigning champion,

Fakhrie Gierdien, that saw him taking the title for the seventh consecutive year, beating Faraad 7-0. In the

play-off for third place it was Donovan Milo who was just a bit too strong on the day and beat Mukesh

Dayah 4-2 to claim the 3rd position in the event. Fakhrie Gierdien is also the reigning SA champion and

we look forward to seeing him defend his title in May in Durban. Congratulations and well done to all

these players on a very successful tournament.

Snooker

After a few last minute entries, the CGSA league season kicked off on 10 March with 22 teams and a lot

of new faces. The idea is to play this year as one big Premier league and then we will be able to separate it

into a Premier and an A-League next year, once we have a better idea of the strength of the new players.

With the two separate leagues, we will be able to work it on a promotion- relegation format and it will also

allow us to have “Home” and “Away” fixtures in both leagues, making it a lot more competitive.

After just 3 weeks of matches, it is the defending champions “The Undertakers”, consisting of Fakhrie

Gierdien and Hugo Lotriet, who have already raced into the lead and who have not dropped a single frame

as yet. There is, however, a lot of snooker left in the season and lots of very strong teams that will all be

fighting it out to try and claim the title.

Club News:

After the extraordinary rains of the last 2 months, our old roof has shown its age with a number of leaks,

resulting in some courts looking like a Tupperware shop with plastic bowls all over the place. The Match

Court took a bit of a hammering and is going to require some replacement planks and re-sanding and re-

tinting to be ready for “Nationals” later in the year. The repairs are sanctioned and underway. Thanks to

Gary for his timely intervention which limited the damage.

League News:

The Gauteng & Masters Leagues have been a stop-start affair since the beginning of the season with the

JP Morgan race, various tournaments and public holidays getting in the way. But hopefully, with the

exception of Easter, we’ll have a clear run to the end of season.

Tournament News :

There were two Tournaments to report on during the last month namely, the SA Masters at Parkview, and

the “Tswalu” Doubles (previously DeBeers) held at Johannesburg Country Club. Sadly, only one entry

from Wanderers Club, namely Phil Louw and myself, Dave Grant………..see pic below. In the past this

tournament has been split into various age groups, but this year, it was all one section and Phil and myself

found ourselves playing in one match against an 18 yr old on the doubles courts………..needless to say,

Phil did a lot of running! Alas, we lost the plate final 3-0 to a team from Randburg Squash, Eldon Slabbert

& Jeremy Manton. In the SA Masters, I spied a couple of Wanderers in the guise of Keith Willows, who

had a good win over Arthur Dyason and ended-up 4th in his age group. Also, Marios Conidaris who came

13th in his age group, and myself, who had the likes of Des Sacco and Roy Plumstead to deal

with…………….and yes, I did get points off Roy! and finished 8th in my age group.

Well done boys, but where were all our other Masters?

issues. Nevertheless this is to be posted on the noticeboard anyway. If you suspect that the club does not have

League came to an end and as usual mixed fortunes were attained. First and foremost congratulations go to the

Ladies first side who won their league. This results in promotion and we’re back in the top division. This means

that come the new season we will have our work cut out for us – once again well done Jeanette Shaff and ladies.

Next, the Men’s second side, ably led by Jasper Hulley, what an exciting end and if there were no shenanigans and

the rain plaid fair a top prise would have been in order – nevertheless we made it to the podium as runners up by

half a point. Well done to you guys. This also results in promotion and now we can boast Men’s teams in First,

Second and third divisions again. To the captains of all sides a big thank you for your spirit and dedication – even

in the difficult times when numbers were short especially at the close of the season. Bobby Donnely and Jeanette

Shaff prevailed as selectors – to you and your fellow selectors a heartfelt thanks – it’s not easy when some players

suffer from that dreaded bowlers disease of thinking they should definitely be playing in a higher position or team.

Some leave to persue glory in other clubs (and they are welcome to do so) and others can prove their prowess in

the club singles and pairs competitions.

Carding folk for weekends for the internal competitions is always difficult. Thanks go to Phil Lazarus and Jeanette

Shaff who have got the ball rolling fast now. We run on the JBA rules as far as scratchings are concerned. PLEASE

remember to put in your leave asap – most people know more than 2 weeks in advance that they won’t be there.

Also remember to check the notice boards thoroughly for the cardings. Here are 2 photos from recent TABS /

At TABS each week we have lovely eats prepared by Janet Fluxman – at R5 only and this certainly goes down a

treat.

For the JBA Singles Bruce and Margaret ran the round Robin stages and Barry Brest and I ran the rounds 2 and 3

the following Sunday. Volunteers are hard to find, but what a nice surprise we got when we had 12 volunteers in

red shirts doing their thing in the knockout stages . See some photos below.

Bowls

With the extremely heavy downpours and the extended length of the rain we have to applaud the green keeper

and his staff for the fantastic condition of the greens. No wonder the SA Bowls Masters has been voted to be

played again at the Wanderers next year.

To all the competitors in JBA tournaments, the Nationals (May) and the Gauteng Open (April) we wish you good

luck.

Recently we received a number of booklets on Bowling Etiquette and these are earmarked for new entrants to our

club (especially new bowlers). I do however get reminded from time to time that even us “experienced”

campaigners need to be reminded to keep the standard high. Let me therefor please remind you that weekends

are in our uniforms (white but preferably reds) and as we are a world class establishment we need to look neat

and tidy. Sitting on the banks is frowned upon and damages them and dropping the bowls onto the green when

unpacking at the start should not occur. Please let’s just observe these and the other niceties that go with the

game and the traditions of sports in general.
