Dear residents of Chailey,

I have known and appreciated God’s answer to prayer for over thirty years, but sometimes He surprises me in an amazing way and as a result my faith seems very small. God says we only

need a small amount of faith, the size of a mustard seed. It says in Matthew 17vs14-20 “Because you have so little faith, I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed you can say to this mountain, “move from here to there” and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

I needed to move a mountain on our holiday this year. When Daisy came to live with us nearly seven years ago, my husband promised to show her the World. So we save hard all year and then in the Summer have a wonderful holiday. This year it was Barbados, now my favourite place in the World. Before we left Chailey and before we got the cases zipped up Daisy and my husband were arguing. Nothing new there. They argued over the padlocks, the size of the cases. Which one moved more smoothly on its wheels, who had the best case, who had the most clothes, who loved Betty the most, who Betty loved the most, who loved me the most and so it went on and on and on. I realise that it is age versus ‘I know everything,” argumentative teenager but it’s very tiresome being in the middle, it’s unending and it’s tiresome for my husband.

They argued through breakfast at Gatwick airport, self booking the luggage through the unattended gates was a nightmare and much sighing was heard “You don’t even get technology Grandpa.” “Yes, but there used to be people in uniform here,” he said. Then we had to rejig the suitcases because Grandpas was the heaviest. He had the most clothes. “I told you so” the teenager was heard to say. If we had been off to the eye rolling Olympics she would have won the gold, silver and bronze. Fortunately I sat between them on the flight but they were still able to argue that black was white and white was black, she can even cause an argument on a flight, whilst watching a film. Teenagers?! How many times have I said “I’m pleased she’s a spirited child, she could have been crushed and broken, she has to vent the anger in her life towards someone.” We got to the hotel and the double bed was under the fan and the sofa bed was not. Very good argument. “Grandpa snores,” she said. It’s alright I’ve brought 4 pairs of earplugs,” I said. “Blah, blah, blah,” I thought. It’s okay they can’t hear me, they have got ear plugs in.

One morning a few arguing days later we were sitting on the beach and they began again. In a flash I made up my mind. I was going home, (very mature!) I stood up and walked into the sea. I wasn’t going to walk home via the Caribbean. I was going to talk to God about this mountain situation. I did begin with “right” and I had my hands on my swimming costume clad hips. “Right, here we are in beautiful Barbados and I actually need a holiday, not want, need.” I continued “Please get me on a flight tomorrow or move this mountain of arguing.” I decided it would probably have to be the flight and I would have gone. I can sit in Chailey while they argue, I don’t need to have sand underfoot to hear it. I walked back up the beach and sat between them, “Did you have a good swim?” the sweet argumentative child asked. They were in the middle of an argument about my husband not liking deep-water and why he didn’t want to go out on a catamaran to see the turtles. “We saw five turtles yesterday” she said “I have read three books” he said. “I’m happy reading.” She sighed. I closed my eyes and pretended to be unconscious “But you were in the Merchant Navy” she said “Not with a new knee” he said.

Two hours later (Gods perfect timing again) my prayers were answered Three teenage boys walked up to us. I looked at their backs to see if they were carrying half a tree and offering “Aloe Vera for your sunburn? “ usually before you can say “No thanks” to the seller they have sliced the thick juicy cactus type leaves in two, adeptly scraped out the goo and before you can say “Ouch” they begin to rub the sticky glutinous gel into any patch on your body that shows the slightest hint of pink and yes it works! But they had no shrubs on them. One held out his hand. “Hi, my name is Bill and we three are on holiday staying at the same Hotel as you.” Suddenly it seemed like Christmas and the ‘We three Kings’ tune came into my head. He continued. “We have noticed a lot of teenagers sitting grumpily on their own and we were thinking of starting a “friendship club” ( now who in 2017 says “friendship club,” only the famous five or the children in Swallows and Amazons?!) He then said to Daisy “would you like to come and meet the others at the Ice Cream parlour by the pool in the Hotel?” I thought maybe I was going to cry. It must have been the mustard seed I had in my eye. Not only had the mountain been moved, it had been conquered.

Daisy spent the next ten days kayaking, paddle boarding, swimming, relay racing, eating ice cream and drinking milk shakes with eleven of the most charming teenagers and all within the Hotel complex. On the last night they all had dinner together and promised to stay in touch and they have. How does God do it?!! I know, He has the Master plan. Just for confirmation that this was ‘of God’ one of the boys had previously been at School with two of Daisy’s best friends at Ardingly. When God intervenes, mountains are moved. The arguing stopped. My husband read 4 books and I slept. Silence is golden and so is my tan.

God cares about every aspect of our lives. He cares about family. He knew that holiday was important. He knows how hard we work and that we needed rest. Everyone at St Peter’s Church do all they can to show the love of God to all who come to our Church. We shall always be grateful for the hard work that is undertaken by the people of St Peters, a committee took over the running of our yearly fund raising event ‘Fun on the Green’ thus freeing up my husband. Once again it rained, but so many people helped to make it a success. Thank you. We raised an incredible £3,500 in spite of the weather. One bonus of the rainy day was that the Church was packed with people sheltering from the weather, but also being entertained and fed by our fabulous catering team headed up by Julia, MaryJane and their families. I even heard mention of “next year”! Thank you.

The final argument? (They wont argue over this because they both agree it is nosense.

ATHEISM

The belief that there was nothingand nothing happened to nothing, and then nothing magically explodedfor no reason, creating everythingand then a bunch of everything magicallyrearranged itself for no reason whatsoeverinto self-replicating bits which then turned into dinosaurs.Makes perfect sense! (No argument).

From all at the Rectory.

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 5th September when Gilly Halcrow will give us a talk entitled Whatever Happened to Christopher Robin. She is an excellent speaker and we are confident this will be a most entertaining evening. Before then we have arranged to meet for a pub lunch.

In August we abandoned the Village Hall and had a day's outing to the Poppy Factory at Richmond. Our coach driver took us on a tour of Richmond Park before we stopped for coffee and then continued to the Factory for lunch and a tour. The factory was established by Lord Haig shortly after the First World War to provide employment for

St Peter's Bell RingingAs I write this, the nights are drawing in, the weather is horrible, the summer holidays are nearly over and the chickens have stopped laying. On top of that, you don't know how you are going to spend the long winter evenings which are coming. The answer is simple – come and learn bell ringing; something you know you have always wanted to do.For various reasons, our numbers have been depleted and there is a real prospect that the bells will be silent on some Sundays. We would welcome new ringers to learn with us even more than we would do normally. We ring 9.25am – 9.55am on Sundays and practice 8.00pm – 9.00pm on Monday evenings, for an hour (we would train new ringers from 7.30). It isn't all hard work. We ring in other bell towers occasionally (eg Newick and Little Horsted and Barcombe last month) and have had expeditions to Eastbourne for fish and chips and to the Whitechapel bell foundry in London. If you would like to learn, phone Brenda Matthews on 01825 72 3978 and we can give you more details.

St Peter’s Churchare looking for anyone of any age, who can play a musical instrument, for example, guitar, violin, piano etc who would be willing to form a group to play at the Weekday Evening Worship service which we hope to introduce in the Autumn. Please contact the Rector or Churchwardens if you feel this might be something you would like to be a part of. (Telephone numbers on inside page of magazine).

LICENSINGDECISION

Our Parish Council and local residents represented their objections at the Licensing Sub-Committee for the application to vary the License at the Service

Station at North Chailey crossroads.

Due regard was given to the 19 written objections from members of the public, Chailey Parish Council and my own written objections. Whilst the Sub-Committee were sympathetic to the concerns of the local residents, they made the following decision.

The Sub-Committee resolved to grant the variation.

ON-GOING REQUESTS FOR MORE SIGNAGE IN SOUTH STREET

Local residents, our Parish Council and I continue to put forward the case for reinforcing the message to adhere to the existing speed limit. I have, for a long time, suggested flashing lights (Vehicle Activated Sign – VAS) which we see in so many other villages in the County. I am informed that this length of road would not meet the criteria for a Vehicle Activated Sign, even as a community led project. It does, however, meet the collision criteria for the provision of an advisory Speed Indicating Device.

We are lucky that our Parish Council continues to work closely with East Sussex Communities, Economy and Transport. They agreed that some new speed roundels painted on the carriageway alongside of the repeater signs will help motorists remember to keep to the speed limit – we hope.

Thanks again to local residents for their valued input.

Cllr. Sharon Davy email [email protected]: 01444 831 336(As I write, my Council computer continues to have problems, so I apologise if you have not heard from me as I cannot open any emails. I have reported this to the I.T. department as matter of urgency.)

some of the casualties of the war and now its primary aim is to help veterans from all wars to train and find employment, with some of them working in the factory. We tried our hands at making a poppy, and then progressed to wreath making. Surprisingly there were only three machines, cutting out the shapes from huge reels of red and green fabric ready for assembly. By November 44 million poppies will be sent to the British Legion for distribution. We meet on the first Tuesday of each month in the Village Hall at 7.45 pm and we welcome prospective members and guests to join us, for a nominal charge of £3 which includes refreshments.

The Sports Pavilion, North Chailey – a further updateThis is a further update on the progress made by the Council on the proposed project to refurbish the Sports Pavilion in North Chailey and should be read in conjunction with the update published as at 11th July 2017.Lewes District Council Building Control has now issued conditional approval for the proposed works. There is one condition to be met relating to the way in which rainwater will be disbursed.

On 18th July 2017 the Council considered the project in detail and, in particular, how the balance of the project would be funded. The Council is very keen to ensure that the important amenity provided by the Pavilion continues, allowing organised sporting activities to be enjoyed by all, and concluded that the proposed works must be carried out. The Council also concluded that there was no alternative to the Council borrowing the balance of the required funds (£38,000) in order to allow the project to proceed. The Council is able to borrow from the Public Works Loan Board at favourable interest rates. An indicative quotation received shows that a loan of £38,000 over 10 years would attract a fixed interest rate of 1.67% per annum and would require annual repayments of about £4,140. The total interest paid over the term of the loan would be about £3,400. As part of their deliberations, Councillors considered the possible financial effect on residents were the Council to take out a loan. The exact effect will only be known when future budgets are prepared. However, if in due course it was determined that the whole of each annual repayment has to be met from an increase in the precept, based on the data for 2017/18 an increase in the annual precept would be required of about £3.20p per annum for households in band D for Council Tax purposes. The increase would be lower for households in bands A to C and higher for those in bands E to H. However, it is hoped that that at least part of each annual repayment will be able to be met by making savings elsewhere in the Council’s budgets. The Clerk has been authorised by the Council to take the first step towards obtaining the loan, which is to make an application to the Department for Communities and Local Government for approval to borrow the money. A further update on progress will be published as soon as practicable. In the meantime, if anyone has any questions or comments, please address these to the Clerk at the Parish Office.Chailey Parish Council, The Reading Room, Chailey Green, Chailey, Lewes, East Sussex. Chailey Litter Pickers451 bags so far!

Summer is nearly at an end but the work of a litter picker never ends. As verges begin to die back litter becomes more visible again. If you see some, please pick it up and bin it. Research shows that litter attracts more litter, so let’s prevent that happening by picking up the first piece and making it obvious that litter is not wanted in Chailey parish.

Next Group Litter Pick: Thursday 14th September, meeting at Pound Common car park at 10am. Equipment available on the day; please bring grabbers and gloves if you have them. All welcome!

Chailey Garage Alcohol SalesYou will no doubt have heard by now that we did not win our case to prevent all-night sales of alcohol by Motor Fuels Ltd at North Chailey garage. There were 19 written comments in opposition from locals, including the Parish Council as a body and our District Councillor; there were none were in favour. Objectors for the most part were largely concerned with safety, defending the amenity of residents and a lack of local demand. At the tribunal called by Lewes Licensing Authority Mark Evans and Michael Rider spoke in person against all-night sales. An explanation for the decision required?

As its own licensing regulations stand – different from planning law - LDC has to consider the potential for public nuisance, crime and disorder, and the rights of local residents to peace and quiet. Well and good. But under trading regulations the garage already has the right to open if it wishes for all-night petrol sales – the extended licence sought covers only the sale at the same time of alcohol and hot drinks. And LDC’s regulations normally allow the sale of alcohol when a store is open for business. Where there is conflict regulations require three District Councillors and a legal advisor to sit in judgment, as happened in our case … the outcome now allows work to start on a new sales hatch for night transactions.

All for the best in the best of all possible worlds? Let’s just hope so, shall we.

tasting juice. If you would like to take part please bring your apples to the hall as early as possible in the morning with your name attached. We are now almost at the time of mists and mellow fruitfulness. This year has produced an excellent crop of blackberries and the sloes look good too. I have found a number of field mushrooms but be sure you know your fungi.Main crop potatoes can now be dug and cleaned. Only store those that are blemish free. Keep them in a dark frost free place in a hessian sack, best suspended to avoid the attentions of rats and mice! Also periodically check to make sure none have rotted.Autumn raspberries should now be cropping up until the first frost. Leave until January and February before cutting down and mulching.Summer raspberries should have next years canes tied in and have a mulch applied.Apples will be ripening and to test if they are ready lift and twist and the fruit should come away in your hand. If cut in half the seeds should have changed from white to dark brown.Pears are more difficult and are probably best picked before fully ripe and finished off inside. The time for summer pruning is now passed and stone fruit bearing fruit trees should be left until late spring before further pruning takes place. Apple pruning is best done in January and February.Figs will now be ripening but the big danger is birds and it is wise to ' bag ' the fruit as it ripens. Again no pruning until March. Check brassicas for caterpillars and white fly and if necessary stake them for support against Autumn winds. Dry onions outside if dry or in a greenhouse if wet. Only store those that are perfect.Winter lettuce can now be planted and it is probably best to buy plants. Winter gem and Valdor are good choices. They will also benefit from some protection in the coldest bits of winter. Please remember our Autumn Show Good Gardening

From the Chailey Leaflet September 1917 An excellent entertainment organised by the Officers of the Royal Flying Corps at Brookhouse (now Chailey Place) was given at the Parish Room on August 8th and very kindly repeated by urgent request on the 10th. Among the soloists special mention should be made of Miss Kipping whose highly cultured singing met with quite an ovation on both occasions. Capt Cole and Miss Kipping were also heard to great advantage in a very effectively rendered duet. Miss Bolingbroke’s delightfully piquant songs were highly appreciated. It were vain and invidious to particularise when each and all the Airmen who contributed to the admirable programme were deserving of the highest praised but a word must be said for Lieut. Walker who never suffered the good spirits of his audience to flag for an instant for lack of his boisterous and untiring fun. The proceeds amounting to £22. 15s were given to the Local Volunteer Training Corps.

Note: £22 15s would be worth approximately £1,170 today.

Chailey Commons SocietySometimes the weather just gets in the way I think. Having enjoyed many fine sunny summer days during July, we were disappointed when we met at Lane End Common for our Butterfly walk to be greeted with grey clouds and drizzle and rain. Despite this there was a keen and hardy group of members and friends and, as if to see us on our way, there was a flash from the sky accompanied by the drum roll of thunder. Undeterred, we set off with our leader Ian Seccombe looking hopeful for the walk. It continued to drizzle and at times harder rain but despite this we managed to see ten butterflies, looking almost as wet as we were, but all agreed it had been an adventure and worthwhile for a walk on this lovely small common. The rain and warmth together have made the bracken grow so tall and the contractors have been out crushing and cutting in in selected areas. The new scraped areas are now showing growth and we are keen to see the emergence of the fresh heather plants. Our commons are well used and enjoyed by many from near and far, but this enjoyment is spoiled sometimes by soiling from inconsiderate dogs depositing nasty little piles of pooh. Please, if you do walk your dogs, bag it and bin it or take it home. Have you trodden in some lately and experienced that lingering smell in the car or on your shoe – horrible. Thank youThe next walk on the common is our Late Summer Stroll on Lane End Common on Saturday 2nd September meeting at the car park at 2.30.p.m. Do come along and join us for this look at the fascinating ecology and hopefully finding butterflies and dragonflies too.Our indoor meetings start this month with a talk entitled ‘The delight of a wildlife pond’ by Lynne Flower in the Chailey Village Hall next to the Five Bells pub at 7.30.p.m. on Thursday 14th September. Visitors are welcome to our meetings and if you would like to join the Society come along and meet us. We look forward to seeing you there.
