Judah, called the Maccabeus, and his companions … summoned his kinsman and those who had continued in their Judaism”. (2 Macc. 8)
Whenever it is Hanukkah time, I am reminded of the role of Israel in my life. Like the ancient Maccabees who stood up for our countrymen, the modern Israelis have more than once told the world that wherever a Jew was in trouble they would go to protect and defend us. But the Hanukkah story itself often is viewed as a war between the Maccabees (Judeans) and the Greeks (Antiochus Epiphanies) or the Syrians (the Seleucids). That is an over simplification of the whole story. The Hasmoneans (the family name of the Maccabees) fought not only the Seleucid Army while living under the reign of Antiochus Epiphanies (“God on Earth),” but a whole host of fellow Jews (the Hellenists) who wanted to give up their Judaism and become Greek-like (Hellas is Greek for Greece). Mattathias, Judah Maccabees’ father said it best, “Let everyone who is zealous for the law and the covenant follow me.” (1 Macc. 2) He was followed by his five sons, Judah, Eliezar, Simon, Jonathan and Yochanan, into the mountains to wage war against the Syrian-Greek Army and its Hellenist allies. Now the question becomes how does one remain zealous for the law and support the covenant when you can’t flee to the mountains; but you have to make sure you go to work and pay the bills and your children need to go to school? Let us examine the law that Mattathias was talking about. Historically speaking, Mattathias lived before the destruction of the second Temple, so his source for his Judaism was the Torah and the Prophets’ commentaries with, later still, the Sanhedrin thrown in. Let’s look at Torah, ‘zealous for the law’ relied upon the performing of the commandments there. To me, the greatest of all were the Ten Commandments, to me the most important on a daily basis, “Honor your Father and your Mother.” For if you honor them and their beliefs, you honor God and the Jewish people, which is the classic teaching. Perhaps the five Maccabee brothers can give us a path to what Zealotry for the covenant means.

As the five brothers were named, and names refers to neshamahs (souls) and souls spirituality, maybe we
can find paths to doing the ‘covenant’ today. Simon-Hearing We have to hear God in all we see, hear,
touch and feel and realize that others are Godly in their acts. Judah- Thankfulness, be thankful that we
are here to enjoy and appreciate our lives and the lives of those around us. Eliezer- Helpfulness- Be
prepared to help others and not be too proud to accept help when it is offered. Jonathan-Gifts from G-d.
Even when we don’t feel we deserve being given something, have the humility to accept it anyway. We
have been given the greatest gift of all, life, so please don’t abuse it through neglect or foolishness, or
stupidity, it is the most precious gift and we are humbled by its value. Yochanan- Be gracious to all. From
the unfortunate soul whose misfortune is obvious to all to the person who may act in an unkind or
uncaring or even rude manner. The latter may, in fact, be less fortunate than you are but acts as if Divinity
has visited them. Believe me, it has not. We have a covenant with G-d and, by extension, with each other.
It is found in the V’ahavta. After the Torah proclaims G-d’s unity, we are told to love. As the five
Maccabees followed their father in waging war against those who would remove our people and our
Judaism from the world, they left us, by virtue of their names and their neshomahs, with a way to
preserve our people and our Judaism. Let us love all who are zealous to honor our people and let us
support them in their Hag Sameah to all !!!
B’ahava,
Rabbi Mark

Burbank Temple Emanu El/Temple Beth Emet of Burbank:
Statement of Joint Exploratory Committee
In recognition of the singular importance of maintaining a vibrant and diverse Jewish community, in Burbank and our surrounding neighborhoods, both now and for future generations, we are called to action. A unique opportunity is currently before the congregations of Temple Beth Emet of Burbank and Burbank Temple Emanu El to consider the value of combining our traditions, our services and our synagogues into one haimish family. Working together, we can build a strong Jewish home that welcomes all and serves each of us. Together, we can find a common voice that speaks to all and yet allows each of us to have a personal expression of our individual Jewish identities. With courage of heart and grace of spirit, we can move beyond any doubts or misperceptions, to explore an exciting path forward. A path that will embrace our mutual Jewish heritage today, and all that we hope for tomorrow.
We invite your thoughts and ideas as this process continues. (Please see President’s Message on page 3 inviting TBE members to upcoming Parlor meetings in the exploratory process with BTEE.)
Page 3
We all lead busy lives. This time of year is no exception. Thanksgiving is a distant memory. Black Friday has come and gone. We are in the midst of the holiday season. It is a time of giving. Let’s not focus on the material things. Let’s focus on helping others by way of doing good deeds.
We should all do more random acts of kindness. We should do these acts because we want to, not because we have to. We should not expect anything in return.
Here are a few suggestions that you can do that doesn’t even cost money! Offer to help when someone is feeling down emotionally. Perk them up! Put a smile on their face. A kind word or funny remark can go a long way to brighten someone’s day. Offer to help a stranger cross the street, if you see they need assistance. Go to a nursing home and visit people who you know or even those you don’t know. Visit the sick or those recuperating from an accident or surgery, bring food, books, blankets, dvds, etc.; whatever may be needed. Offer words of condolence to those who are mourning. Donate time to a favorite charity. Help in a soup kitchen. Recycle unwanted clothes. Give blood. All these things, and more, are life-affirming acts for those who receive and those who give. Simply decide to put your loving-kindness in your actions and your words. That is the essence of true humanity.
Here are a couple more options to ponder: We also can help by donating items that cost little money. Donate food to the food shelter. Give to the Red Cross. Help people suffering from Sandy or any other natural disaster.
Just like smiling can be contagious, so is giving, it has a “ripple effect.” Remember one thing, good deeds are not seasonal, they are a way of life.
In the upcoming month, we are going to have Parlor Meetings with regards to the relationship with Burbank Temple Emanu El. We are going to ask questions and want to hear your feedback at all of the meetings. Giving your knowledge is another form of a good deed. Please plan to attend. There will be more to follow.
May you enjoy health and happiness. -Steve

Tribute Cards
Tribute cards are always in order for happy or sad occasions. These cards
are a wonderful way to remember or honor someone.
Did you know that you can get on an automatic mailing to those in need
of well wishes by contacting the office?
A card will automatically be sent from Tribute Chair John Eisenger in your
name to those in need of healing and an amount of $3 will be added to
your bill each time a card is sent in your name. Contact John Eisenger at
(818) 842-5439.
