A NEED FOR CHANGE
1 in 4 people will be diagnosed with a mental illness in their lifetime
By 2020, behavioral health disorders will be the #1 cause of disability worldwide, surpassing all other illnesses.
450 million people
worldwide have some type of mental illness.
90 suicides EVERY HOUR
Nearly 2,200 people a day (800,000 a year) die by suicide—90% related to
mental illnesses.
360,000 people with mental illness are housed in
under-equipped US jails. 35,000 are in hospitals.
$2.5 trillion/year IN COSTS
Spent directly and indirectly on mental illness. We will spend $6 trillion by 2030 worldwide, more than heart disease, cancer and
diabetes.
A NEED FOR CHANGE

Model: Creating Community
Changing the World of Mental Health

Accredited by Clubhouse International
• Evidenced-based non-clinical mental health agency
• Supplements existing Mental Health and Addictions therapy
• Provides a work-ordered structure • Assists in preparing members for integration in
the community and teaches members improved healthy lifestyles
WHAT IS A CLUBHOUSE?
• Reduce incarcerations Criminal justice system involvement substantially diminished during and after Clubhouse psycho-social program membership .
• Improve member well-being Compared with individuals receiving psychiatric services without Clubhouse membership, Clubhouse members were significantly more likely to report that they had close friendships and someone they could rely on when they needed help.
• Improve members’ physical and mental health A recent study suggests that service systems like Clubhouses that offer ongoing social supports enhance mental and physical health by reducing disconnectedness.
CLUBHOUSES HAVE BEEN PROVEN TO
MAKING A DIFFERENCE
• Compass House is currently serving the City of Medford population with a total membership of 615 members in just three years
• Each day an average of 34 people walk through the door to participate in the program • 2017 Compass House had 8,097 total member visits. That equaled 29,440 service hours provided to members • 2017 Compass House assisted 43 people to gain paid employment
IMAGINE THE DIFFERENCE THAT CAN BE MADE IN DOUGLAS COUNTY
MEMBERS TAKE AN ACTIVE ROLE IN THEIR OWN RECOVERY
• Membership is voluntary and without time limits • There are no agreements, contracts, schedules or rules intended to
enforce participation
This gives members a sense of ownership, investment in the community in which they choose to be a part
• Members and Staff work side-by-side as colleagues to accomplish the work of the Clubhouse
• All work done in the Clubhouse is generated for the benefit of the clubhouse and its’ membership. There is not outside work or enterprises inside the Clubhouse. This gives meaning and purpose behind every Clubhouse opportunity
A CLUBHOUSE GIVES MORE THAN A PLACE TO GO
“Clubhouse gives me a reason to live.” - Linda
“It’s my second home. It’s my safe place to go to be useful, somewhere to do good
and a positive place to be around.” - Jenny
“It gives me purpose, tools and skills. I learned computers and a sense of responsibility that
comes with it.” - Gary
“Clubhouse literally saved my life.” - Karen
“I come because it gives me leadership and something to work
towards.” - Robert
“Something to do and something to keep me busy.” - Tim
“A place to learn and meet new people. I come because it helps me with my mental illness. It gives me purpose and a reason to get out of
bed.” - Wolf
“I couldn’t live without it. I have to come. It’s been so good to me.” - Mike
MEMBERS TAKE AN ACTIVE ROLE IN THEIR OWN RECOVERY
• Decisions of the Clubhouse are made on consensus by members and staff together as equals
• Clubhouse staff are sufficient to engage the membership yet few enough to make carrying out the responsibilities impossible without member involvement
• All work in the Clubhouse is designed to help members regain self worth, purpose and confidence
CLUBHOUSE FOCUSES ON MEMBERS’ STRENGTHS
• There are no medication clinics, day treatment or therapy programs within the clubhouse
• Members have equal access to every clubhouse
opportunity without differentiation based on diagnosis or level of functioning
One of the ways we help is by giving people a path to better opportunities for financial stability and independence
88% of people living with mental illness in Oregon are unemployed
60% of people living with mental illness have the desire and are
able to be employed
ENDING ISOLATION AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC DISPARITY THROUGH
HOPE AND REBUILDING LIVES
Clubhouses offer three different types of employment: • Independent – Clubhouses help members with putting together
resumes, cover letters, filling out applications, interview skills, employment-focused workshops as well as monthly employment dinners to celebrate member accomplishments and offer support
• Supported Employment – The next level of support offered that is individualized to each member’s unique situation and needs. The type, frequency and location of desired support is decided by the member, employer and Clubhouse staff
• Transitional Employment – The most supported of employment, Transitional Employment is designed to give members an opportunity to build skills, current work history and references to help members transition back into the workforce

Letter of Support from Roseburg City Police Chief Burge, Retired: “I am confident that the investment placed in the Roseburg Clubhouse will have a lasting
positive impact on our community and, most importantly, our citizens who suffer from a mental illness. The Roseburg Clubhouse will help fill a void in services and outreach to the
mentally ill. It is about time something like this becomes a reality in Douglas County.”
