Greetings from the

PresidentChadron State College has made remarkable progress during its first 100

years and this past one was no exception.This publication highlights some of Chadron State’s achievements during the

past year, and provides some interesting facts about its history. Included is a close look at one of Chadron State’s most important attributes, the Chadron State Foundation.

This fall, the foundation is approaching the finish line of the Vision 2011 campaign. I am extremely proud of all that has been accomplished during the effort and look forward to seeing it make a positive impact on future generations.

I also am proud to report that we’ve crossed all the major hurdles in implementing the new electronic student information system, NeSIS – the backbone of our record-keeping and business functions. The new system, which became necessary when the old one became obsolete, has required immeasurable amounts of staff time and resources. With that behind us, we can return our technology focus to improving teaching and learning. Chadron State has long been a pioneer in using technology for instruction, and will continue pushing the envelope in that arena for long into the future.

I love to see the campus bustling with activity as classes begin for another year. Enrollment figures are the best they have been in years, a true reflection that word is getting around about the quality of our academic programs. Because of the hard work of our faculty and staff, we are gaining interest in programs both online and on-campus.

As we embark on the final semester of this special year, please plan to visit campus. Take special note of this year’s special homecoming celebration, which will feature a wide array of festivities to mark the special occasion.

On the morning of Oct. 1, during a pregame festival, we will take a moment to dedicate three new features on campus. The entrance portal at 10th and Main, a flag plaza on the Dean’s Green and a new statue outside of Old Admin are among this summer’s projects that will go down as lasting legacies to the centennial.

Those new features are just the latest in the institution’s remarkable history. Throughout the years, so many of you have been involved with realizing the dream of higher education in northwest Nebraska. Thank you for your continued support.

Greetings from the

FoundationIt has been my pleasure to serve as president of the Chadron State

Foundation Board for the last two years. I have been an active member of the board since 2000, and it continues to be one of my most rewarding volunteer involvements.

Why? Because as the programs and assets of the foundation grow, so do the breadth and depth of the work that we can do. Over the last several years, I have witnessed tremendous changes in our foundation. When the CSF was founded in 1964 the belief was simply that if we made scholarship money available to students of need, they could attend and succeed in college. As our students worked toward their college degrees, we received an education of our own. We learned that money isn’t enough. It’s vitally important — and we want to raise more of it. But just as important is the support that we, our schools, and our partners provide these students so they can live in an environment that not only expects them to succeed and learn in college, but one that helps them achieve that success.

The Vision 2011 campaign addresses this important concept. This effort has not just been fundraising but in some ways more important, it has been friend raising. The success that we have enjoyed as we enter the latter stages of the campaign is not only impressive, it is exceptional. Of course our successes are, in effect, community successes since in the end we are dependent of the generosity of the CSC community, which includes you, friends and alumni of our institution.

However, we cannot rest on our laurels … we cannot be content with the status quo. The ever-expanding vocational opportunities for our youth, the exponential growth of technology, and the ever-present competition for students, demands institutions of higher learning be at the forefront in terms of innovation and creativeness. These challenges, while never ending, are exciting. This year, as Chadron State celebrates it’s centennial, we look forward to your continued friendship and generosity. Your support will ensure Chadron State will continue to meet those challenges and will remain a premier institution of higher education in the High Plains.

The founders of Chadron obviously placed great value on education. Just four years after the town sprang up when the railroad tracks across northern Nebraska reached the scenic White River Valley in 1885, funds were raised and a five-man delegation was appointed “to visit Lincoln and use their best endeavors to secure passage of the bill which provides for the establishment of a normal school in this city,” the Chadron Democrat reported.

It was more than 20 years before those “endeavors” would bear fruit, but the persistence paid off in January 1910. That’s when seven members of the Nebraska Board of Education, after touring the community in horse-drawn sleds, selected it as the site for the fourth such institution in the state. Chadron State College was born and became the only four-year, fully-accredited institution of higher education in the western half of Nebraska.

The first term opened in June 1911, but the school’s new building was not completed and the classes were at Chadron High School. The building, which became the center section of the block-long Administration Building, was finished by September and 248 students enrolled.

From its humble beginnings, the college has grown into a comprehensive institution with an enrollment of approximately 2,900. It was founded as a teacher training institution, as “normal schools” were called then. Preparing teachers is still a major emphasis, but the college has more than 60 other undergraduate majors and endorsements, a strong pre-professional program, particularly in the health professions, and a thriving graduate program.

The 281-acre campus is surrounded by a unique landscape that includes scenic buttes,

pine forests, small streams, fertile cropland and grasslands. It contains 21 buildings with a replacement value of approximately $126 million. “Outside Magazine” has named Dawes County, where Chadron is located, one of the nation’s top 100 counties in which to live and “Sports Afield” has tabbed Chadron as one of the “Top 50 Sports Towns.”

Chadron State’s motto for its centennial—A Century of Service—is much more than a sound bite. It is a fact. Through the years, the college has exerted great effort to make its programs highly accessible in its far-flung service area.

Shortly after he became the college’s second president in 1916, Robert I. Elliott told the Board of Education that “study centers were being organized in the territory and the instructors are always ready to spend their Saturdays in carrying on their work where 10 or more students get together to pursue one or more lines of study.”

CSC faculty members also began taking courses off-campus on a weekly basis in the early 1940s to help teachers who neither had the time nor the resources to come to the campus.

During the 1960s and into the ’70s, many teachers who were seeking master’s degrees flocked to CSC to earn credit in night classes, but the roles were reversed in the mid-1970s, when Chadron State professors began traveling to area communities to teach night classes in several disciplines.

In the 1990s, Chadron State became a national leader in distance learning, sending out some 250 courses annually via telephone, television and satellite connections. That number has decreased significantly the past few years because of newer technology.

CSC began offering courses over the Internet in 1997 and in the fall of 2004 became the first college in the nation to have its entire math curriculum online. Students from every state and several foreign countries are now enrolled in the 161 courses that the college offers online. The Master of Business Administration Degree that is online has earned national recognition as a “best buy.”

Despite the new methods of delivering courses, the college remains a bustling place. Its size permits opportunities for research and leadership that often are not be available to undergraduates at larger institutions and there are 65 student organizations that provide extracurricular participation and service. The fine arts encourage students to develop their musical and artistic skills and also provide outstanding entertainment.

The Galaxy Series brings nationally-recognized performers and speakers to the campus each year. The athletic teams compete at the NCAA Division II level and are members of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Special features include the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center, the Coffee Cattlemen’s Gallery, the Eleanor Barbour Cook Geology Museum and the High Plains Wildlife Collection of taxidermy that was donated by Cabela’s.

These developments and the accomplishments of many of the colleges’ 17,000 alums undoubtedly would make those persistent founders of more than 100 years ago proud.

Celebrating the first 100Chadron State College’s 14-month centennial

celebration got under way in October 2010. The highlight is expected to be this year’s homecoming Oct. 1. The college will host a pregame party on the dean’s green and dedicate three new prominent features which are being constructed on campus – the entrance portal and signage at the corner of 10th and Main, the flag plaza on the dean’s green and a new statue east of Old Admin. The full day of events will end with an alumni band concert and fireworks.

Reliving the historyIn recognition of the centennial, a new

history book about Chadron State College’s first 100 years hit bookshelves early this summer. “Chadron State College: A Century of Service,” was authored by Con Marshall, who served as CSC’s director of information services and sports information for more than three decades. The 240-page pictorial history is available at the Eagle Pride Bookstore, the Sandoz Center and the Alumni Office.

Online offerings continue to grow

Chadron State College has made great strides in its online course offerings in recent years. Data released by CSC’s extended campus programs show the number of online courses offered at CSC has grown from 89 in 2006 to 255 four years later. The total number of duplicated enrollments in online courses has nearly doubled in four years, growing from 2,189 in 2006 to 4,342 last year.

Enrollment remains strongChadron State College continues to have

strength in enrollment. The enrollment of 2,841 students reported in 2010 is 240 more than the enrollment of 2005. Preliminary figures indicate another healthy increase for the fall 2011 semester.

Arioso takes flight in EuropeArioso, Chadron State College’s women’s choir,

delivered more than a half-dozen performances while touring the Czech Republic, Hungary and Austria in March. The 11-day European journey is believed to be the first-ever performance tour on foreign soil for members of the CSC music department. The 12 members of Arioso were joined by director Dr. Una Taylor, music professor Dr. James Margetts and his wife Colleen, and two student assistants.

Winning in the classroomChadron State College has long prided itself on

having top-notch scholar athletes, and received national recognition in the past year for the success of its athletes in women’s basketball and men’s track and field. The men’s track and field team at Chadron State College was named the 2011 Division II Indoor Men’s Scholar Team of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. It earned the distinction by being among the highest-placing teams with at least a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average at the NCAA indoor and outdoor championship. For the second consecutive year, the women’s basketball team was honored by the

2010-2011 Highlights A tradition of givingChadron State College and the Chadron State Foundation have built a tradition of helping students meet their financial needs to attend college. The institution awarded its first scholarship in 1928. The four-year “Free Scholarship” worth $37.50 per year was awarded to the “highest ranking student of good moral character” graduating from a Nebraska high school. A number of scholarships were established in the following decades, but the college’s efforts in fundraising were taken to another level when the Chadron State Foundation was established in 1963. As the cost ratio of students’ education has shifted from state to private dollars through the years, the foundation and its generous donors have stepped up to the challenge. This year, the office reports that it will award more than $500,981 to be used for scholarships and program support.

Women’s Basketball Coaches Association for having the second-highest grade point average in Division II, finishing the academic year with a GPA of 3.644. In fact, the CSC women posted the fourth-highest GPA in all of the WBCA’s five divisions – Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and Junior College.

Bringing in the big namesAudiences at Chadron State College were treated

to big-name entertainment last year, and will be treated to more in 2011-2012. Among the acts were country music artist Chris Cagle, who brought down the house with a homecoming 2010 concert in the Nelson Physical Activity Center, and animal conservationist Jeff Corwin of television fame. Although those are tough acts to follow, the Galaxy Series is expected to delight audiences again this year. Highlighting the scheduled performances are rock duo Nelson on Sept. 15 and comedian Rob Corddry in January 2012.

Theatre on tourChadron State College’s students in the

performing arts continue to entertain audiences in Memorial Hall and beyond. CSC’s theatre program went on tour to provide a live theatre experience for about 1,900 children during a tour in fall 2010. Through a partnership with the Chadron Public Library, the CSC theatre program presented a touring production of its adaptation of the book “Ounce, Dice, Trice” by Alastair Reid. The play is one of four that was produced by the theatre program in 2010-2011. Roger Mays, CSC director of theatre, and CSC’s actors and actresses have more top-notch theatre the schedule for the upcoming season. “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” the first of four productions by the theatre program, will begin Oct. 6. Students move on to medical, law schools

Chadron State College continues to provide the preparation students need to further their studies for advanced degrees after leaving the institution. Thirty-three students who studied health sciences at CSC were accepted to professional schools beginning this fall. In addition, three CSC students were accepted to enter law school this fall.

Sharing knowledgeChadron State College has long been a hub

for intellectual activity, and the institution again hosted a long list of speakers. Nature photographer Michael Forsberg was the first to speak in the Mari Sandoz Heritage Society’s new Pilster Great Plains Lecture Series. A wide array of local expertise was featured in the Graves Lecture Series and the newly formed Science Abroad Speakers Series.

New uses for Kline Center space

Chadron State College lost one of its most well-known buildings this year when its former student center, the Kline Campus Center, was demolished. Although administrators were reluctant to demolish the building, CSC has begun realizing savings in maintenance and utility costs, and efforts are under way to make good use of the building’s space. Construction is nearing completion on an improved parking lot in the area, and plans have been made to improve the amphitheatre in coming years with a bandshell and landscaping.

Campus growthChadron State College is continuously improving its buildings and grounds to make a better experience for students and employees. Beginning with the center portion of Old Admin, the campus has grown to include more than 20 buildings which have been enhanced by landscaping and other beautification efforts.

Student accessChadron State College has been a beacon of accessibility since its founding. In the institution’s early years, students paid no tuition and only a one-time $5 matriculation fee and the normal schools were billed as “The Free Schools for the Training of Teachers.” The college first started charging tuition in 1939, at 50 cents per credit hour. Now, although the per-semester cost of tuition has grown to $2,030, CSC remains unrivaled in affordability among four-year institutions across the United States.

Big news for the newspaperChadron State College’s student newspaper,

The Eagle, earned best overall newspaper and claimed runner-up honors for its website during the 18th annual Nebraska Collegiate Media Association’s Golden Leaf Awards, presented at Hastings College in April. The Eagle’s strong showing, which follows runner-up finishes in 2009 and 2010, was bolstered by 24 individual awards, including 10 first places. In addition, program adviser Michael Kennedy was chosen as the NCMA’s director for the upcoming year.

Students organize cancer conference

Five Chadron State College social work students organized and facilitated a conference about cancer in October 2010. The event featured about 15 information displays and presentations by experts on the topic, including Helene Duhamel of KOTA television. Also, during the event, six licensed hair professionals collected hair to be used for wigs for cancer patients. The students were led by their instructor, associate professor Bruce Hoem.

Learning in LondonMore than three dozen students headed

“across the pond” in May for a 15-day study abroad experience. The annual trip, which began 35 years ago by justice studies professor Dr. George Watson, has grown to include students from other learning disciplines. The 14 justice studies students of this year’s trip were joined by 11 business students and 12 from education.

Workplace safety honorsChadron State College once again recognition

for workplace safety from the Nebraska Safety

Council this spring. CSC was presented the council’s 2010 Star Award, the second highest honor in the Workplace Safety Award Program.

New graduation requirements

In an effort to improve students’ ability to graduate in four years and reduce debt load, the Nebraska State College System changed the number of credit hours needed to graduate from 125 to 120 and also reduced the number of credit hours required for general education. The new policy requires faculty and administrators at Chadron State, Peru State and Wayne State Colleges to design undergraduate degree programs based on 120 credits with a maximum of 42 credit hours required in general education.

Student-athletes among nation’s best

Eleven Chadron State College athletes earned All-American status in 2010-2011. Highlighting the group is Brad Gamble of Eagle Valley, Colo., who won the gold medal in the heptathlon at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Meet. Other track and field athletes who earned All-American status by placing in the top eight of their respective events in either indoor or outdoor competition are Julia Bayer of Stuttgart, Germany, Jake Gruver of Cheyenne, Wyo., Jessica Horsley of Basin Wyo., Cody Hunt of Litchfield, Karl McFarlane of Montego Bay, Jamaica, Lanar Newman of Kingston, Jamaica, Phil Rivera of Apple Valley, Calif., and Brandon Segelke of Sidney. Also claiming All-American laurels was Jimmy Savala of Clovis, Calif., in wrestling. One student-athlete, Cody Beran of Sargent, was named an Academic All-American in football.

On-campus livingMuch like the land of Northwest Nebraska, Chadron State College’s residence halls have gained a reputation for being among the most spacious around. In early years, Chadron residents opened their homes to students. The first dormitory, which would later be named Sparks Hall, was opened for women in 1915 with rates ranging from $4.18 to $6 per month. Meals were just $3 per week. Now, the $5,150 students pay annually for a double room and meal plan seems like a bargain compared to other institutions.

Book businessOne of the most costly expenditures for college students is textbooks. In 1911, students rented all books for a flat fee of $1. Now, depending on the courses, students may pay $1,200 or more each year.

Dawn Brammer, assistant professor of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, was elected president of the Nebraska Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance. The year-long post runs from November 2010 to November 2011.

Dr. Mathew Brust, assistant professor of science, is credited for discovering a previously undocumented beetle that will be officially described. He also authored five scholarly works about insects that were published in professional journals. He presented information about the design and function of adhesive setae in male tiger beetles to the North Central Branch of the Entomological Society of America at Minneapolis, Minn.

Nancy Cairns-Pietrangelo, an adjunct faculty member for Social and Communication Arts, received the Presidental Gold Award for Community Service from President Barack Obama for her international works with UNICEF. The awards are presented to “thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service.”

Michael Kennedy, journalism instructor and adviser, was elected the 2011-2012 executive director of the Nebraska Collegiate Media Association during its annual conference in Hastings on Saturday, April 9.

Dr. Tim Anderson, professor of business, is serving as an elected member and chairman-elect of the Board of Commissioners for the Baccalaureate/Graduate Degree Commission of the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs, the accrediting association for business programs. He also partnered with Dr. Rick Puetz of Dakota State University for a presentation at the ACBSP national conference on Quality Assurance Reporting in summer 2010. They will make a similar presentation at the 2011 conference.

The Chadron State College Arboretum, under the direction of facilities coordinator Blair Brennan and horticulturist Lucinda Mays, was the recipient of the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum’s 2010 Affiliate Site Award. The award is presented to recognize public gardens that “demonstrate excellence in collection development, maintenance practice and community engagement.”

Dr. Kathy Bahr, professor of English, won the 2011 Frederick C. Luebke Award for outstanding regional scholarship. She won the award for her essay, “Collateral Damage: Veterans and Domestic Violence in Mari Sandoz’s ‘The Tom-Walker.’”

Ryan Baily, head track and field coach, was named this year’s Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women’s Indoor Track and Field coach of the year.

Faculty and Staff Achievements Expanding the roleAs the needs of the region have expanded through the years, so has Chadron State College’s mission. Founded as an institution to train teachers, the college now features programs to educate students in a wide variety of learning disciplines. To meet the needs of its service region and beyond, CSC offers 65 undergraduate majors and endorsements and eight master’s degree programs. The five largest programs are business administration, education, biology-health sciences, justice studies and rangeland management.

Going the distanceWith Chadron State College’s sparsely populated region, the faculty has long existed of pioneers of distance education, from its early days of using cars, and even airplanes, to reach students in outlying communities. Technological advances have given the faculty the tools to reach students from around the globe. Since offering its first Internet course in the late 1990s, the college’s online offerings have grown to 161 courses, with some degrees being available entirely over the Internet.

Dr. Laura Gaudet, chairwoman of Counseling, Psychology and Social Work, has been elected the post-secondary vice president for the Nebraska School Counseling Association for the second time. She was elected during the NSCA conference in October 2010. The term runs from July 1, 2011, to July 1, 2012.

Dr. Joyce Hardy, professor of science, was selected in late summer 2010 to serve as a peer reviewer for Higher Learning Commission accreditation. Since taking the post, she has been training in the Program to Evaluate and Advance Quality and Pathways accreditation processes.

Deb Kuskie, food services office manager, was presented the Award of Excellence for Creative Dining Services for 2010-2011. The award is presented to one employee annually for excellence in attitude, initiative, service and performance.

Con Marshall, information services officer, was named the Chadron’s 2010 Citizen of the Year by the Chadron Record newspaper in January.

Pam Newberg, King Library head of technical services, presented two sessions at the Online Audio-Visual Catalogers Conference in Macon, Ga., in October 2010. The sessions were entitled Beginning Sound Recordings Cataloging and Realia Cataloging. She also is a member, and most recent past chairwoman, of the Cataloging of Children’s Materials Committee of the Association of Library Cataloging and Technical Services,

which is part of ALA. She will be part of a panel presentation in June at the ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans.

Dr. Shafiq Rahman, associate professor of communication arts, has authored a book that details challenges faced by Bangladeshi-Americans since 9/11. The book, “The Bangladeshi Diaspora in the United States after 9/11: From Obscurity to High Visibility,” has been published and profiles the Bangladeshi community in the United States.

Brad Smith, athletic director, entered the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Hall of Fame this summer in recognition of his years as the Eagles’ successful football coach.

The Nebraska Alumni Association has selected Dr. Teresa Zimmerman, assistant professor of applied sciences, with its Young Alumni Achievement Award. The award was presented May 5 at the association’s 2011 Alumni Awards Banquet in Lincoln.

Expanding the regionThe 109 students matriculated during the summer of 1911 consisted mostly of Nebraskans, with two enrollees from Wisconsin, two from Wyoming, and one from South Dakota. The thousands of students to enroll since then have come from far and wide and graduated to influence countless communities. The 2,841 students enrolled in fall 2010 originated from 47 states and 29 countries. Still, 62 percent of those students call Nebraska home. Next on the list are Wyoming, South Dakota and Colorado with 11, 8 and 6 percent, respectively.

Faculty and staffAs the enrollment has grown at Chadron State College through the years, so has the number of employees. From the 12 people on the payroll in 1911, the number has grown to include 273 faculty and staff members.
