FROM THE CEOOur season opens with something new. International superstars Kronos Quartet have redefi ned the genre and continue to forge a new identity for string quartets in the 21st century. Alongside them, we are proud to introduce new ensemble Galvanised, featuring pianist Diedre Irons, who off er a fresh voice and colourful repertoire.

We are delighted to present the BeethovenreCYCLE featuring Michael Houstoun. He will present all the Beethoven piano sonatas in three parts, spread across the country and across the year. Those of us who remember his extraordinary fi rst cycle more than two decades ago will not want to miss this one. If you haven’t experienced immersing yourself in the genius of these great works, here’s your opportunity.

After 40 years at the top, Tokyo String Quartet have announced that they are disbanding and we are very fortunate to be included on their fi nal world tour. With just two concerts in New Zealand, we hope you will join us for this very special farewell.

Chamber music is all about partnerships and we combine forces with the Royal Society of New Zealand to present Einstein’s Universe. Later in the year, the award-winning combination of pianist Piers tLane and the Goldner String Quartet tour tto all ten centres with two of the mightiest works in the genre by Elgar and Franck.

New works also feature prominently in our season including Kiwi composers

Ross Harris, Claire Cowan, Gareth Farr and Samuel Holloway alongside Ellen Taaff e Zwilich, Valentin Silvestrov and Bright Sheng. The juxtaposition of OLD WORLD : NEW WORLD is the intriguing theme of NZTrio’s second national tour for us in May.

To cap off the bumper season The Tallis Scholars present cathedral concerts in four centres including the brand new Cardboard Cathedral in Christchurch.

Chamber music lovers in Napier and Dunedin can look forward to returning to their homes during 2013 while our Christchurch and Wellington supporters will experience some new performance spaces in their cities. In all cases we will do our best to look after you, off er personal service and keep you at the heart of all that we do.

I encourage you to explore this brochure and our website to discover the selection of other 2013 events including Encompass regional concerts, the NZCT Chamber Music Contest, and Encounter masterclasses and talks, announced throughout the year.

Chamber music is a dynamic and essential element of our unique cultural landscape. Come and join us in 2013.

Euan Murdoch, CEOChamber Music New ZealandE

We will introduce you to some new experiences, deepen your understanding and enjoyment of music and reacquaint you with friends.

Inventive. Eclectic. Experimental. Exhilarating. This is Kronos, the most daring string quartet in the world. They celebrate their 40th birthday this year with their most extensive New Zealand tour yet.

KRONOS QUARTET (USA)

“I’ve always wanted the string quartet to be vital, and energetic, and alive, and cool, and not afraid to kick ass.”David Harrington, Kronos Quartet

The Kronos Quartet tell the stories of new music like no other. Employing pre-recorded tape, amplifi cation and spectacular virtuosity, they have spent 40 years now travelling the globe and experimenting, constantly, with what it means to be a string quartet. And this programme is classic Kronos, beginning with transformative Indian raga and ranging from ancient Serbia to modern-day New Zealand. The quartet by Valentin Silvestrov, considered by Arvo Pärt to be the world’s “greatest living composer”, leads into one of Kronos’ signature works, WTC 9/11 by Steve Reich; and …hold me, neighbor, in this storm… is one of their most recent commissions, fusing the modern string quartet with Orthodox plainchant and the instruments of the ancient Serbian poets. Join us on a journey to the heart of new music now.

These are three old friends who leapt at the opportunity to play together when Rebecca Steel returned from Australia.

Diedre Irons, most recently Head of Classical Performance at the New Zealand School of Music, ‘retired’ in 2011 to enjoy an increasingly busy concert career. Rebecca Steel isformer fl ute with the Philharmonia in London; and Debbie Rawson is Head of Woodwind at the NZ School of Music and leader of the saxophone group Saxcess.

There is something about this combination of instruments that has inspired composers to their wittiest and most extravagant moods. From the extraordinary ‘Fantastics’ to the unashamed romance of Marc Eychenne, from Shostakovich at his most tuneful to the Frenchman described as ‘Milhaud with a rakish twist’, this programme takes you on a journey through some of the world’s most delightful music, ending with 21st century klezmer and a brand-new commission by Ross Harris.

Vibrancy, freshness, friends, and fun. Join much-loved pianist Diedre Irons and her new trio, Galvanised, for one of the most colourful combinations in all chamber music.

the same year they were presented the KBB CANZ award for outstanding services to NZ music. In these concerts Bright Sheng’s evocative Four Movements are paired with a brand new commission from Claire Cowan, the young New Zealand composer whose fi rst work for NZTrio was hailed for its “disarming grace and playfulness” by William Dart. Ellen Taaff e Zwilich, one of the USA’s most impressive and exciting composers, leads into Tchaikovsky’s mighty Op 50; and in programme two, Korngold’s glorious opus one is followed by one of the most moving works in the repertoire – Shostakovich’s Op 67 of 1944, as full of exquisitely beautiful, Jewish-infl ected melody as itis a searing indictment of Stalinism and the war.

“Intensity, playfulness, exoticism, romance – this is a mix of pieces that we know really well with these lovely fresh new works, and we’re very much looking forward to introducing them to you.” Justine Cormack, NZTrio

The last chance to experience one of the supreme chamber ensembles of our age. The Tokyo String Quartet have announced their retirement, and they bring with them quartet masterpieces for two historic farewell concerts.

“Playing of infi nite fi nesse and extraordinary subtlety”The Sydney Morning Herald

“Our concerts in New Zealand and Australia will be among our last as a string quartet. The central piece on our program is a quartet full of meaning and one that will surely capture our state of mind as our quartet bids farewell to the world.”Martin Beaver, Tokyo String Quartet

“a sound so golden and seductive that it made your ears go all quivery with love”The Washington Post

The Tokyo String Quartet have reigned supreme over the music world for an astonishing 44 years, captivating audiences worldwide with the perfection of their sound and technique and building up a catalogue of over 40 landmark recordings. Now, following the decision of their two longest-serving members to retire, they have chosen rather than re-form the quartet to disband – at the height of their powers.

In this, the culmination of their magnifi cent history, the Tokyo String Quartet bring with them three masterpieces from three very diff erent centuries. Mozart’s ‘Hoff meister’ quartet, the epitome of classical beauty and elegance, is paired with one of the masterpieces of the 20th century – Bartók’s String Quartet № 6, the last and most moving of his great string quartet cycle, which looks back to the folksong of his beloved Hungary and which he fi nished just before he died. Finally, the programme concludes with Brahms’ expansive C minor quartet, the passionate outpourings of a young man who would work for 20 years on one of the most intense, romantic and much-loved chamber works ever composed.

Michael Houstoun is not only New Zealand’s foremost Beethoven pianist: he ranks among the great Beethoven pianists of our age. He celebrates his 60th birthday with this historic repeat cycle of his Beethoven Sonata Series twenty years ago.

“Outstanding Beethoven all round. The special attraction is the rare spiritual dimension in Houstoun’s playing of the serene fi nales... It’s as though Beethoven were no longer of this planet when he wrote them”The Listener

Beethoven’s cycle of 32 sonatas is the most remarkable series for piano ever composed. Written the whole length of his creative life, from the early Op 2 dedicated to Haydn to the mighty Op 111 which takes the piano into the realms of pure imagination, this is the “New Testament of the piano repertoire” and one of the supreme treasures of human artistic endeavour. Their famous names – Moonlight, Tempest, Appassionata, Waldstein – have entered the pantheon of cultural history, and Houstoun presents them here after being “totally immersed” for 20 years with this most extraordinary, human, and powerfulof composers.

BEETHOVEN reCYCLE

Michael Houstoun, famously, chose to return to New Zealand after his spectacular sweep of fi nal prizes inthe world’s three most prestigious piano competitions – the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition (1973), Leeds Competition (1975) and Tchaikovsky Competition (1982). Hugely in demandfor concertos with our fi nest orchestras and chamber concerts the length of the country – his regular CMNZ tours with the winner of the Michael Hill International Violin Competition included – he has been based here ever since, and is adding increasing solo recitals to his repertoire with his recent Goldberg and Beethoven Diabelli Variations. In 2012 he was appointed CNZM in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services as a pianist, and returns to Beethoven at the very heightof his powers.

Programme № 4 – Appassionata

This cycle of performances takes Beethoven’s sonatas across New Zealand. Two concerts are part of the Kaleidoscopes subscription series, with the option of purchasing the whole cycle to complete your Beethoven experience.

“It was Beethoven who woke me up to myself as a musician. The thing about Beethoven is that he somehow synthesises human psychological truths, with all of their subtlety and all of their range, into music.”

AN INTERVIEW WITH MICHAEL HOUSTOUN

One of the remarkable things about this cycle is that Beethoven never repeats himself, not once. He could always work on several pieces at the same time and yet they could have unbelievably contrasting psychological, spiritual, emotional contents – from something as bright and joyous and incredible as the Waldstein, for instance, to the Appassionata, which is about as dark as it gets. And then, everything he identifi es in those pieces is somehow true, so that human beings when they hear them are constantly acknowledging themselves as they listen. Beethoven tells you about yourself.

The even more astonishing thing about these sonatas is that when he wrote most of them he was already deaf. So he wrote always beyond the instrument. This is the music in his ears. They are diffi cult, there is something virtuosic about all of them, even the so-called ‘easy’ ones. That’s because he was ahead of his time, and because when he was young, he was the best pianist in the world. He would have outplayed everybody else on the planet. And he always asked for extreme sonorities as well. There are some things – like the octave glissandi in the last movement of the Waldstein, or Op 111 where he takes your hands out to the absolute extremes

MICHAEL HOUSTOUN & BEETHOVEN

of the keyboard and you get these mad pianissimo trills up the top – he does ask for things that are almost impossible. However you can see that they are driven by such totally musical necessity that you do everything you possibly can to try to make them work.

It’s a remarkable thing for me to play these sonatas again, and it was a remarkable thing the fi rst time around. I think I measured myself with that then, and I’ll be measuring myself with it again now. This time it’s a diff erent experience, because I’m older, and music is a whole diff erent world for me than it was 20 years ago. I think I’m a more natural musician than I was before. I’m much more relaxed, and more in tune with the sonorities of the instrument. I still love clarity, people have always said to me that my playing is clear, and I think that’s important – clarity allows the audience to choose for themselves what they want out of the music. For me, I’ll be even less inclined to impose myself on the music, and to impose my own ideas. What is important is sincerity, and not getting in the way, and being true to the instrument. I’m just going to practise, and play. And see what happens.

— Michael Houstoun

Albert Einstein was not only the greatest physicist of the 20th century – he was also a keen musician. He carried his violin, “Lina”, with him everywhere he went; he would refresh his mind with constant musical breaks during his work, and particularly adored chamber music, taking part in the regular Princeton musical evenings and playing with many of the most famous musicians of his day.

UK violinist Jack Liebeck, “Young British Performer of the Year” and founder of The Fibonacci Sequence, has a strong interest in science himself and has carried the Einstein’s Universe programmes with Professor Brian Foster worldwide. In the wake of the recent discoveries in particle physics, he teams up with chamber music friends in New Zealand – pianist Stephen De Pledge and Andrew and Julia Joyce, principals of the NZSO – for a special double programme of illustrated talks and the music that Einstein played and loved.

pianist Piers Lane have won numerous accolades for their recordings that include both Gramophone and BBC Music Magazine’s Editor’s Choice.

The Franck and Elgar quintets are among the fi nest in the repertoire: the Elgar at his most mysterious and expansive, and the Franck compelling, passionate and intense. These two programmes are completed with a new work from Gareth Farr in celebration of the 21st birthday of sister-cities Sydney and Wellington, as well as two of the masterpieces of the string quartet repertoire: Mendelssohn’s lovely A minor quartet, and one of the most stirring, dramatic and thrilling works ever composed – Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden”.

The Tallis Scholars mark their 40th birthday this year, and to celebrate, they are coming on their fi rst visit to New Zealand as part of a landmark world tour. This is vocal music at its sublime and absolute best.

THE TALLIS SCHOLARS (UK)DIRECTED BY PETER PHILLIPS

The Tallis Scholars have ruled supreme over sacred vocal music ever since they gave their fi rst concert, in November 1973 at the Church of St. Mary Magdalen in Oxford. 40 years later, with countless world tours in their calendar and a catalogue of over 70 award-winning recordings, they have done more than any other group to establish the genre as one of the pinnacles of the Western classical repertoire.

This special cathedral tour programme begins with their namesake, the Elizabethan genius Thomas Tallis, and includes the works that The Tallis Scholars have made famous. The Allegri Miserere and Palestrina’s Missa Papae Marcelli, from the Italian Renaissance: Elizabethan motets by William Byrd; and two of the most beautiful contemporary composers for voices, John Tavener and Arvo Pärt.

The evening fi nishes with an historic meeting of voices across the world. Our fi nest local choristers, in each of the four centres, join The Tallis Scholars for the astonishing 40-part masterpiece: Thomas Tallis’ Spem in alium.

Chamber Music New Zealand has championed new music for more than half a century. Commissioning new music is at the heart of our philosophy and we are proud to present brand-new works by four distinct Kiwi voices. Very much our music of today.

NEW MUSIC

Samuel Holloway is the 2013 Mozart Fellow at the University of Otago and the artistic director of the contemporary music ensemble 175 East. He won fi rst prize at the 2007 Asian Composers League Young

Composer Competition in Hong Kong, was a fi nalist in the 2011 SOUNZ Contemporary Award, and has a growing catalogue of chamber and orchestral works that have been performed in Asia, Europe and North America, including one of the Landscape Preludes for Stephen De Pledge. Usually based in Auckland as a lecturer at Unitec, he studied philosophy as well as music and has a strong interest in science and the history of ideas.

Gareth Farr (ONZM) began hiscomposing career with CMNZ as composer-in-residence, in 1993, while he was in the middle of post-grad study at the Eastman School of Music in New York.

He has been commissioned numerous times since for CMNZ, most recently for the Zephyr tour in 2012, and has written works for all of New Zealand’s fi nest ensembles from the New Zealand String Quartet, Auckland Philharmonia and NZSO to the percussion group Strike, of which he was a founding member. Gareth has also worked on a number of trans-Tasman collaborations including the 2000 Sydney Olympics concert and the recent Song Company project, and is as well known for his theatre, dance and fi lm works as his chamber and orchestral scores. This is his fi fth string quartet.

CMNZ/Goldner String Quartet co-commission

This is Claire’s second work for NZTrio and her fi rst commission from CMNZ. Freelance composer, founding member of Auckland’s Thread Theatre Co, director of ‘The Blackbird Ensemble’ and cellist in alt-country band 'Toad’, she is the

youngest composer to have had a work performed in the NZSO’s Made in NZ concerts, spent 2008 in residence in New York, and has become increasingly known recently for her fi lm and television scores including Billy andy What Really Happened: The Women’s Vote. Her works range from orchestral and chamber music to dance and drama collaborations – always with a certain wry sense of humour and quirkiness.

CMNZ/NZTrio co-commission

Ross Harris, QSM, recipient of the CANZ Citation for Services to New Zealand Music and four-times winner of the SOUNZ Contemporary Award, has a catalogue of over 200 works that range from chamber music and electronic music to

symphonic music, opera, and numerous song cycles. Composer-in-residence for two years with the Auckland Philharmonia and frequently commissioned by every major ensemble in New Zealand, his many works for CMNZ include the recent cycle Songs for Beatrice with long-time collaborator Vincent O’Sullivan, which toured the country to great acclaim in 2012. He also has a soft spot for klezmer, playing accordion in his band Kugeltov Klezmer, which made him the fi rst choice for Galvanised when they were lookingfor a new work to round out their programme.

“I love writing string quartets and it’s a real thrill for me to go back to that. It’s also exciting to be working with the Goldner String Quartet for the fi rst time, and to be chosen to celebrate this international connection between Wellington and Sydney – both cities which I absolutely love.”

“I’m very excited to engage musically with the life, work and legacy of someone as fascinating as Einstein. I’m also thrilled to be working with Stephen again, and with Jack, Julia and Andrew for the fi rst time – they are all such superb musicians.”

“I love working with NZTrio. They are such a dynamic bunch of performers, and their enthusiasm, talent, and willingness to experiment make them a dream team to collaborate with. It’s awesome to be able to tour the piece around so many communities in 2013.”

“Coming from a folk tradition, klezmer gives me a palette of melody, rhythm and harmony beyond my normal compositional resources. My klezmer-infl uenced chamber music attempts to transform the wildness and passion of klezmer into an ‘art’ music context.”

“When the musicians came into our school, the children were both excited and inspired by the workshops they participated in. They got so much out of the experience, with many of them wantingto take up instruments themselves! The work CMNZ are doingis fantastic and I would encourage anyone to get involved.” Teacher from participating school

Chamber Music New Zealand has teamed up with musicians and schools, education leaders and funding partners to ensure that quality music is accessible to all primary school children. We want to raise community awareness to the benefi ts of linking professional musicians directly with schools.

The New Zealand Community Trust Chamber Music Contest is the longest running youth music competition in New Zealand and is the only nationwide chamber music competition for young musicians and composers in the country. It is presented annually by Chamber Music New Zealand.

The competition is a wonderful opportunity to encourage young musicians, regardless of standard or experience, to perform together and strive towards excellence. It also aims to provide an opportunity for musical activities within schools to have a link with the wider community at both a local and national level.

The 2013 National Finals will be held in Wellington on 2 and 3 August. Entries will be accepted from January 2013 and more details can be found on our website.
