• He was a Democratic-Republican• He was a friend of the farmer• Fixed the Alien and Sedition Acts• Repealed the Judiciary Acts of 1801

Tripolitan War

• The Barbary States made ships pay tribute when passing so they wouldn’t take your goods and crew

• Jefferson refused to pay it, so we went to war• Lasted 10 years

Louisiana Purchase

• The US relied on the port in New Orleans for shipping.

• It was owned by Spain and we paid a tax to use it.

• When France gained control of the port Jefferson sent Robert Livingstone to buy New Orleans from Napoleon.

• Napoleon offered the entire Louisiana territory to the US for $15 million.

• Jefferson sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the new purchase.

• Jefferson wanted them to do 4 things:1. Make careful studies of geology, botany and

zoology of area2. Gather info on any Indians3. Search for source of Missouri River4. Look for any British soldiers

• Left with three boats and 29 men on May 14, 1804

• Along the way, a French fur trapper joined the group with his wife, Sacagawea
