City land use patterns: Residential, Industrial, Commercial - Where do you live?

CBD

The rapid growth of urban areas is the result of two factors: natural increase in population and migration to urban areas.

SquatterSettlements

SquatterSettlements

In less developed countries, people often arrive from the countryside without education or resources. These newcomers may settle in squatter settlements or shanty towns, usually found outside of the city. A shanty town is a slum settlement where poor people live in dwellings made form scrap materials.

RURAL or URBAN Where do you live?Rural areas (the country / countryside) in the US are areas that are not urbanized. They have a low population density, and typically much of the land is devoted to agriculture. Other areas in the world might have small huts/simple cottages where people maintain traditional ways.

The human population has lived a rural lifestyle through most of history.

The world’s population, however, is quickly becoming urbanized. In 1950, less than 30% of the world’s population lived in cities. This number is expected to grow to 60% by the year 2025.
