President's Message
Hello ALAC Members,
Anyone that has not paid their dues has been deleted
from the membership of ALAC following the mailing of
this Bulletin. If you are one that has not paid your
dues, please send a membership form and the dues
($25 single, $35 family, $35 foreign single) to Joyce
Johanson, 126 Kurlene Dr., Macomb, IL 61455, for
reinstatement.
Note to Past-Presidents: The old standing rule that
dues were not payable by Past-Presidents has been
turned around and all members of ALAC have to pay
dues to have membership in the club.
By now, I'm sure everyone has noticed that we are
going to have one National Grand Futurity
competition. You will find a full page on the prize
money breakdowns in this Bulletin. Make sure you are
a part of this. Make sure you have nominated your
litter(s). It is only $15.00 per litter. The Futurity
Secretary is Ann Lanterman, 1509 189th Ave. NE,
Redmond, WA 98052, phone 425-868-0276.
We realize that the last Bulletin was out late. We will
endeavor to improve this situation in the future and
hope that everyone will enjoy the Bulletin back in it's
old form and will support it with advertising.
Work on the National Specialty is gearing up. There
are a lot of special things planned and we look
forward to everyone participating. You can boa part of
it whether you are showing a dog or just helping with
the Specialty, or both. If anyone would like to help out
please let me know. I'm sure we have plenty to do and
could use your help.
I hope everyone has had a wonderful Holiday. I wish
you health, wealth and happiness in 1998Susan S. Giles

From the Treasurer
Members should note that dues are payable September
1, 1997 for this year. There are no notices sent
individually, just the one in the Bulletin. If you do not
pay your dues by December 1, 1997, you can be
removed from the Roster and will have to reapply for
membership. If you did not receive a bulletin with the
dues notification in it, mail your check immediately, to
me at the following NEW ADDRESS:
Stephen Campbell88 Lake Avenue
Ocean Grove, NJ 07756
Questions, call 732-897-0544. The best time to reach
me is between 6:30 and 9:00 PM during the week.
Please try and remember in the future that dues are
payable by September 1 of each year. Next year we will
have the notice in earlier. NOTE: ALAC's past
Presidents must now pay their dues each year to keep
their membership. Dues are $25.00 individual, $35.00
family and add $10.00 for each foreign member.
($35.00 individual, $45.00 family). The new Bulletin is
worth it alone.
Look for our financials as of November 21, 1997 in this
Bulletin. For your information, we have $2,615.40 in
the Benitez/Wilks fund and $1,282.00 in the Rescue
funds. Both these funds are designated and cannot be
used for anything else. Some members have been
generous with their dues payments and it is truly
appreciated.

YOUR 1997 AWARD FORMS IN THE MAIL-111 i I I
know you think you have lots and lots of time BUT
April 1st will be here before you know it.
The Holidays and the shows will all be over for 1997
when you read this. Now is a wonderful time as you
recoup from the joyous festivities of the 1997 holiday
season to reflect on the past year. What better time to
get your awards forms out( they have appeared in the
last three bulletins) fill them out, and mail them to me.
16
Be sure to include any instructions that pertain to yourawards. Also if you are not planing to attend thenational specialty in June PLEASE send $4.00 perPlaque so it can be sent directly to you and we don'thave to worry about someone else picking it up to taketo you. Believe me doing this saves us a lot of time andconfusion.
The best part of' this event is Larry Bniton's video. He iscounting on each person with an award due to submit aPhoto(.5..X7 or 8X10 PLEASE) of that dog so the videocan include every one. Last year we had a wonderfulcollection of pictures and I hope this year will be evenbetter. DON'T BE LEFT OUT OF THE VIDEO!
I would like to propose a plan for anyone who does nothave an awards form to submit for 1997. Write me anote as to how many you need and send it to me with aSTAMPED self-addressed envelope and I will return itto you promptly with your request. I think this willwork better than phone calls as my work hours do notwork well to return calls.

Health & Education
I attended the AKC Breeders Conference on CanineHealth and Genetics in St. Louis. The breakthroughs inmapping the Canine Gnome are incredible. As far ashealth approximately 97% of canine diseases thought tobe genetic have a counterpart in human medicine, sincethe genepool in purebred dogs is infinitely smaller thanthat in humans, studies in dogs can be extrapolated backto the human for both sites and defect in geneticmaterial to start looking.
Canine geneticists have decided that Lhasas have asmaller genepool than lots of other breeds so thatidentification and parentage should be possible withonly 5 or 6 markers. Hopefully we will be one of thefirst breeds to have genetic testing at our NationalSpecialty in Colorado. More information and acomplete report on the Genetics conference will follow.
We will still offer CANINE GOOD CITIZENTESTING in COLORADO and request that you plan toattend.

Amy Andrews is working on a draft survey to submit tothe committee for comment. It should be completed
17
before the end of November. Amy and Melanie Harker
have explored the possibility of distributing the survey
to veterinarians. The notion of including it in
professional publications and/or journals was discarded
because it would cost a minimum of S200 per page, and
the returns would not justify the cost. Instead, members
will be encouraged to distribute it to veterinarians in
their area.

Futurity, Secretary/Coordinator
The results of the 1998 Futurity Judge's Ballot are
published in this bulletin. A big thank you to all who
allowed their name to be on the ballot.
114 ballots were counted. (Not included in the count -4
persons sent in two ballots, 3 ballots had no name or
address, and 2 ballots sent by non-members).
Please remember, all litters born between October 1,
1996 and November 30, 1997 are eligible to be in the
1998 Futurity. You may nominate through the end of
February, 1998.
A form to nominate the 1999 judges is included in this
bulletin. Please consider putting your name in
nomination. Nominations will be open until March
31st, 1998.
Please remember to support Mike Reinke. I hope he
receives a large entry. Let's make the 1998 Futurity a
successful event. There will not be a Sweepstakes in
98 - get your nominations in for your new litters.

Historian
I want to thank the Board for appointing me as the new
Historian for ALAC. I am looking forward to serving
ALAC in this position. I would like to ask the Board
and the membership for suggestions for projects or
displays that relate to the history of the breed. My
thought is to present a display each year at the National,
perhaps in the Hospitality Room, that showcases some
aspect of our breed. This would not necessarily be
restricted to the history of show dogs. Please submit
any suggestions you might have for topics by
February I'.
I am informed that there is no budget for this position.
Coming from a strong background in the non-profit and
public sector, I am well used to this directive. Perhaps
we can offer a Lhasa photo contest, with a minimal
entry fee, to generate some dollars to offset the cost of
display production. Photos could be exhibited andjudged at the National, and perhaps category winners
could be published in The Bulletin. And, of course,
donations for this purpose are always appreciated as
well. If anyone has access to portable display boards ofany kind that could be borrowed for the National, please
call me at (408) 730-7575.
It would also be nice if some kind of portable display
could be developed to ship to regional specialty shows,
if clubs were interested, since many in the fancy are
unable to attend the National. I find the history of our
breed a fascinating one, and think there is broaderinterest beyond National Specialty attendees.
If anyone else is interested in helping with these orother efforts which promote the historical aspects of theLhasa Apso, please give me a call; it's always better tobrainstorm by committee.

PROGRESSIVE RETINAL ATROPHY
During the course 01 1997 a number of UK breeders/owners have had their dogs tested for evidence of hereditary
Generalized
Progressive Retinal Atrophy (GPRA). Throughout the summer and autumn I have been receiving evidence of testin
g and in most
cases the dogs have been pronounced 'unaffected'. This result does not mean that they are clear. In fact it is doubt
ful in these early
stages if any assumptions can be made as to when or if any Lhasa is likPly to be clear. As the year progressed there
developed two
classes of owner and breeder. Firstly there were those who were anxious to ensure the welfare and wellbeing of the
ir dog was
paramount so much so that some had all their dogs tested including those which had gone as pets a few years ago. Al
l were traced
and tested. Secondly there are those who selfishly find excuses, usually financial, for not having there dogs tested. Th
is is immedi-
ately' seen. This is immediately seen as false economy because for the cost of a single entry at a UK Championshi
p show they could
have their dog's eyes tested.
The avoidance of having the test, which to date has not had the stamp of approval under the joint BVA/KC scheme
, has meant a
major change as from January 11998. Because of the strenuous efforts by the Lhasa Apso Breed Council together w
ith those of
breed specialist, Juliette Cunha, we have succeeded in getting the breed listed under the joint BVA/KC eye testi
ng scheme as
from January 1, 1998. The results will be printed in the Kennel Club's Breed Record Supplement, published quar
terly. But we do
have a black hole.
Ever since the clic&nse was known about earlier in 1997 a number of responsible breeders/owners have had their do
gs/bitches
tested. In a small number of rnv-s the dog showed to be affected. Now once the disease has been identified there
is no cure just a
progressive worsening until the dog becomes totally blind. So those few dogs found to be positive, because there w
as no joint
scheme in
being until January 11998, then the record of that dog will not be in the public domain, unless the breeder/own
er reveals it.
Further as the disease is incurable then we may never know of the affected dog, nor its pedigree line. This is very s
ad because in
order to establish a link through the sire and dam it is essential to know the background.
Further there is an element in the UK, plus a number in nearby Europe, who are trying to restrict the owners of th
eir stock from
having them tested. Immediately that throws up, the question WHY? There would seem to be two reasons. First
ly they do not
want their stork and/or pedigrees revealed especially if some stock is declared affected. Secondly they may be awa
re of a problem in
the line and do not want it in the public domain. As far as I know in the UK no one can stop you having your do
g tested without
a court injunction. But we feel that restrictions of this nature are imposed for other than honest reasons. What is i
nteresting is that,
to date, very few of the successful kennels are having their stock tested. This is despite it being a recommendation
from the Breed
Council, which is made up of two representatives from each breed dub, and they are elected by the membership
of each club. So
we can honestly say that Breed Council represents the membership as a whole. Even so some of the Breed Counci
l members do not
wish to conform to the agreement they entered into. See what I mean about enforcing things in the UK.
24
Well from the all important date ofJanuary 1, 998 everything will be in the public domain. It is only a matter of time before those
who are not having their dogs tested becomes common knowledge. Further, I can see a very short lead time coming about when
failure to join in with the testing will result in having a financial effect on specific breeders. I hold no direct brief on the subjectexcept to say that as it is an established fact that Generalized Progressive Retinal Atrophy is hereditary in the Lhasa Apso then
anyone who tries hide from it is deluding themselves.
Oh and by the way don't think that it is only on this side of the pond. I have evidence of its existence across at least three conti-
nents. In order to make everyone aware of the latest developments the Breed Council has notified each National Canine Club
affiliated to the Kennel Club. The exception is the USA where I have already been given the privilege of addressing the Board of
the American Lhasa Apso Club.
On a final serious note could I please, implore you not to ignore the disease. IT WILL NOT GO AWAY. Once we can establish the
age of onset then we can identify the lines from which to breed out the disease. Currently I know the American exhibitors achievedistinction with their dogs in the ring at a much earlier age than in the UK and throughout much of the rest of the world. That
does not excuse the responsibility for seeking out the possibility of the disease by asking the new owner of the Champion even in
it's older age, to have the eyes tested. Being an ostrich is not responsible dog ownership. And by avoiding the issue you are causing
unnecessary perpetuation of the disease rather than setting the example by participating in the test program. I can visti2li7P that in
the next twelve months you will be undertaking the same process as we have just complete in the UK.
At our seminar in November it was decided that we are to publish, the names of all the dog/bitches tested, including those
affected, together with the names of the sire and dam. This is for dissemination within the breed, but as in other breeds with
similar hereditary problems the news soon travels. And that can only be good for the breed, if we are responsible and not callous
breeders.
So please join us in our efforts to identify each and every line where the d sen cf. might exist. The eye test is the only available process
at the moment but with sufficient interest and need then DNA testing is the ultimate, one off process and it can also Identify all
sorts of other problem areas plus the genetic finger printing of the sire and dam, should there ever be any doubt.
