OASIS Online Access to Student Information Services (OASIS) is a secure web portal to electronic services provided to Curtin students. It is a condition of your enrolment at the CGSB that you create your OASIS account and access OASIS at least once a week to receive important communications via your student email and the Offi cial Communications Channel (OCC).

e-Student and Start Up are important features within OASIS. e-Student allows you to update your contact details, view your study plan, enrol and withdraw from units and obtain your results. It is important for you to become familiar with e-Student. You can access e-Student from the My Studies and Evaluate tab in OASIS.

The CGSB off ers free OASIS familiarisation sessions at the start of each trimester and all new CGSB students are encouraged to attend.

Students enrolled in the MBA and the MBL are required to complete at least forty hours of professional development to be eligible for graduation which comprises their CGSB Professional Portfolio. The Portfolio is a tool for recording and acknowledging your professional development activities. All CGSB students will be encouraged to use the online platform iPortfolio accessible through OASIS to keep track of their Portfolio activities. Training sessions for iPortfolio can be found under the Events tab of the CGSB website: http://gsb.curtin.edu.au/gsb/events

While the CGSB Professional Portfolio requirements only apply to graduating MBA and MBL students, students enrolled in Graduate Certifi cate of Business, Graduate Diploma of Business and Masters of Science (Mineral and Energy Economics) are also encouraged to build their professional portfolio. We recommend that you aim to complete 10 hours of portfolio activities by the completion of your GCB and 25 hours by the completion of your GDB. These hours will be counted towards the 40 hours required at the end of your MBA or MBL should you continue your studies beyond your initial qualifi cation.

Most events held at the CGSB through its Building Your Career initiative carry Portfolio hours. You must register online using your Student ID in order to accrue attendance certifi cates.

Trimester 2 2012ACADEMIC MENTORING PROGRAM

As entry to the CGSB is highly competitive, your off er of a place in a CGSB course is an important achievement. If you’ve had a break from study or have never studied before, beginning your fi rst trimester can be challenging as the transition to graduate study may require some reorganisation in the way you think about yourself. The CGSB is committed to ensuring that all students are provided with appropriate assistance during their transition to the School and its courses and so, the CGSB Academic Mentoring Program (AMP) for commencing students was developed.

The overriding purpose of the Program is to ensure that new students at the CGSB are assisted in making the transition to life at the CGSB and their studies a successful one and in order to help with this process, commencing students have the opportunity to register for allocation of a CGSB Mentor. The mentors in the program are recent graduates who have kindly volunteered their time, experience and skills in social and academic life to help you settle more easily into your studies and new environment. The AMP is set up as a ‘buddy system’, giving new students a contact for the simple questions they don’t want to ask their lecturer. While the program is voluntary, we recommend that all new students register for the Program.

The AMP runs formally for one trimester only as we believe that the main objectives of the program will be met within that timeframe. Any ensuing arrangement between the mentor and mentees aft er trimester end will be deemed outside the AMP and conducted at the discretion of the two parties.

Please complete the registration form online by Friday 4 May. You will be assigned a mentor by the beginning of Week 2. You can fi nd registration information at http://gsb.curtin.edu.au/gsb/events

A full set of AMP Guidelines can be found on our website: gsb.curtin.edu.au/gsb/current-students/academic-mentoring-program

• FIRST PRIORITY - To protect life by ensuring that all people who may be in danger are warned and made safe. This is your only priority.

• SECOND PRIORITY - To prevent the spread of the hazard by controlling its extent and minimising its release into the environment.

• THIRD PRIORITY - To save assets in the area. • FOURTH PRIORITY - To eliminate the hazard i.e. eliminate the cause of the emergency.

You are responsible for yourself and for assisting your classmates. The most important element is making sure that everyone gets out of the building, safely & quickly.

Know where the primary and secondary exits are (the emergency exit stairs at both ends of the building).

Always make sure that your name is on the roll taken at the start of class in order to ensure an accurate head count.

Go directly to the assembly point aft er you evacuate the building.

REMAIN CALM. When you reach the assembly point (corner of Murray & Irwin Streets), help check that everyone has assembled. If you notice someone is missing, immediately advise your lecturer.

If you do not intend returning to class, notify your lecturer before leaving to ensure that you have not been mistaken as being still in the building.

COMMUNICATIONS

External Phone/Mobile 9266-4444

When reporting an emergency, the following information should be included: • Exact nature of the emergency • Exact location (including Building, Level & Room No. where applicable) • Name of person reporting the emergency • Contact number (where applicable)

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES AT THE CGSB

Page 14: CGSB Orientation Guide Tri 2 2012

CGSB Orientation Guide

Trimester 2 2012

CONSIDERATIONS IN AN EVACUATION EVACUATION SIGNAL The sounding of the EWIS evacuation alarm will constitute the evacuation signal in buildings. The alternate evacuation signal will be a fi re alarm bell or a verbal directive issued by the appropriate warden or member of staff . Evacuate immediately.

EVACUATION ASSEMBLY AREA The CGSB Evacuation Assembly Area is on Murray Street opposite the intersection of Irwin and Murray Streets. Exit the front of the building and turn left .

EXITS & EGRESS ROUTES Go to the nearest safe & unobstructed exit (located at both ends of the building). Use the emergency exit on the ground fl oor. DO NOT RE-ENTER THE LOBBY. DO NOT USE THE LIFT.

PERSONAL BELONGINGS Personal belongings such as wallets, handbags, briefcases, keys, mobile phones, etc. should only be taken if they are immediately and safely accessible and will not obstruct egress routes or in any way hinder a person's prompt evacuation from the aff ected area/building.

PERSONS REFUSING TO LEAVE Don’t refuse – just go. Do not engage in arguments. If persons refuse to comply, Floor Wardens will carry on with their own emergency evacuation duties and report the matter to the Building Warden as soon as possible. Don’t be the one left behind.

'OUT OF THE WAY' PLACES Providing it is safe to do so, particular attention must be paid to toilets, storerooms, offi ces, etc. where persons could be unaware of an evacuation in progress. If you know someone was headed to the toilets just before the alarm, let the Floor Warden know.

OPENING DOORS -FIRE SAFETY When opening doors (to check a room or leave) in circumstances where a fi re is suspected, before opening the door, look for warning signs of a possible fi re (e.g. smell, smoke, temperature).

PEOPLE STANDING OUTSIDE Be on the alert for persons gathering outside the building -they must be encouraged to move well away from the building to ensure that they do not block exits, obstruct emergency services personnel or expose themselves to secondary hazards.

RE-ENTRY TO THE BUILDING Persons are not permitted to re-enter until approval is given by the Emergency Response Offi cer. Where applicable, staff should re-enter before students.

PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES -HELPFUL STRATEGIES Persons with disabilities are not necessarily helpless, and can serve as resources for their individual conditions and needs. Discuss with persons who have disabilities how they can best be assisted in an evacuation (e.g. lift ing, carrying, escorted from the building). Be involved in the planning process so that if it does become necessary to evacuate, you can directly assist the individual. In an evacuation, when off ering assistance, ask the person how you can best help.

FLOOR WARDENS ARE ASSIGNED TO EACH FLOOR. They will: • Where applicable, deploy persons to prevent

access to aff ected area/building • Ensure people are evacuating • Check designated area/s to ensure all people

have evacuated • Report results of evacuation to Building

Warden • Assist as required
