Carlton Gardens Primary School 29 May 2015 Compass School Manager Compass School Manager is an essential part of our school organisation. Instead of having to visit numerous websites and fill out paper forms Compass is a one stop shop that allows you to manage attendance, school reports, student portfolios, school excursions and payments. It also allows teachers to send you important information about your child’s class. We would recommend that you download the Compass app from the the App store. In the next couple of months the app will be constantly updating and adding new elements. Soon you will be able to receive notifications to your phone just like tiqbiz. It has been great to see over 75% of our school is accessing Compass. In the next few weeks it will be essential for you to login to Compass. You will be required to use Compass to book Parent-Teacher Interviews. School Reports will also be delivered using Compass. Over the next few weeks you will be receiving documentation that will include a your login details, instructions on how to book an interview as well as instructions on how to approve student absences. Open Morning

Thank you to all the community members that came along to our open morning for Education Week. It was lovely to see so many parents sharing in their child’s/children’s learning. The purpose for the morning was for parents to experience and observe their child/children within their normal learning program, including specialists. Teachers were not available during this time to chat as they were busy teaching/planning. Please remember that if you need to discuss matters with your child/children’s teacher make a time directly with them that suits you both. You are always welcome as we have an open door policy.

Attendance

At Carlton Gardens Primary School we believe that student success is dependent upon good attendance at school. Students need to attend school regularly in order to participate fully and gain maximum benefit from their schooling. Regular attendance enables students to access a full education, allowing them to reach their full potential. Students with poor patterns in primary school usually have poor patterns in secondary school and often disengage from school. There is a direct link between school attendance and achievement later in life. Poor attendance also makes it difficult for children to form positive relationships with their peers therefore; we feel that good attendance is essential for CGPS students.

Attendance If your child has an attendance record around the state average for their entire school life by the time they reach year 12 they would have missed one year of school. Last year at CGPS we were above the state average for attendance. We are trying to get our attendance level well below the state average. To help us with this goal please ensure that your child attends school on all designated school days. If your child is absent please immediately login to Compass to approve the absence.

Punctuality At CGPS we classify a child as late if they arrive at school after 8:55am. Children are expected to sign in using Compass if they arrive after the bell. If a child is 15 minutes late everyday by the end of the year that is the equivalent of 8 days away from school. Please ensure that your child is on time for school every day. The need for punctuality and the impact lateness can have on student learning and classroom routines. Our lesson structure dictates that most of the instruction is done in the first 10 to 15 minutes of class so if a student misses this it is hard to catch up.

Approving Absences. It is a State Government requirement that all student absences are approved by parents. At Carlton Gardens parents can easily do this by logging into Compass.

Holidays Parents taking holidays during school time can also pre approve absences on Compass.

GRAFFITI HURTS EVERYONE

HOW STUDENTS CAN HELPYour child will be exploring the issues of graffiti in an educational presentation. Delivered by leading educationalists Warner Youth Education, the Graffiti Education program informs young people about the legal, social and personal consequences of graffiti. It encourages them to be part of the solution by developing a sense of civic pride.

If you see graffiti anywhere within the City of Melbourne you can call 9658 9658 or contact us online to report it for removal.

HOW PARENTS CAN HELP

Encourage your child to discuss with you and others what they learned in the presentation.Encourage your children to become involved in the various city wide art programs that provide an opportunity to be involved in art activities and events. For information visit City of Melbourne website www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/doartnottags.

WORKING AS A COMMUNITY TO HELP STAMP OUT GRAFFITI

UNDERSTAND GRAFFITI LAWS

Tough graffiti laws in Victoria give police and Protective Service Officers special powers to search, arrest, fine or charge you. Penalties range from on-the-spot fines to imprisonment and can include:

• Marking property without owner’s consent - Jail term of up to 2 years and fine of up to $34,646

• Carrying a spray can while on or near public transport property - Fine of up to $3,609 or on the spot fine of up to $722

Graffiti is a highly destructive problem which affects the entire community. It has damaging economic, social and environmental consequences and costs many millions of dollars each year to police and clean up. Every dollar spent on graffiti removal is a dollar that could be used in other positive ways in our community.
