CFS 2015

The American Singer Canary is a Song Type Canary bred in the United States by a systematic plan, known as the blending of Roller to Border Fancy over a period of years to produce a Canary that has (1) an outstanding free harmonious song, pleasing to the ear, neither too loud or too harsh, with plenty of VARIETY and (2) a beautiful shape or type not over 5 3/4 inches long with tight feather that will please the average home lover of canaries. SONG is 70 POINTS divided into FREEDOM 10 POINTS and RENDITION 60 POINTS. FREEDOM. 10 POINTS. Every time a bird sings a full song dur-ing the first ten minutes, Judge scores one (1) point. If he sings more than 10 times he still gets only 10 points. RENDITION 60 POINTS. This means SONG itself. Song of the AMERICAN SINGER should have just the right amount of blending of roller and border to be pleasing to the ear, neither too loud, harsh or monotonous, of the right quality, strength and vari-ety without any more than 6 chop notes in his song. CONFORMATION 20 POINTS. This means TYPE compared to our MODEL. Faults on the score sheet are not the only to be con-sidered. If the bird is not up to the MODEL in length and size through the breast, also length of beak, set of the eyes, condition of the toes and feet, in fact anything contrary to the MODEL, points may be deducted. CONDITION 10 POINTS. Faults and score columns are provided in this section. Minus signs should be placed before all faults and

deducted from total of 10 points. Faults should be keyed for health, vigor and cleanliness with maximum of 2 points for each. Condition of cage should also be noted such as one perch in a cage where there should be two perches, paper on the bottom of the cage, soiled seed and water cups as well as cage and bird.

Jose Zelada National Colorbred Association Judge

My passion for birds started on my early childhood on my native country. Canaries came on to the scene after moving to New York twenty-five years ago to pursue a degree in Aviation Technology. After graduating I have started working for a major Cargo Airline Company. I became involved in the hobby after been introduced to the local Canary Club in New York City, since then, I joined different Clubs in the NY tri-state area and later the National Color Bred Association and Ornithologists Associations around the world. I attended to my first National Show in 1,993 and thereafter I enjoyed attending as exhibitor, this is the opportunity to share experience and accomplish-ments with friends made through the years of exhibiting and stewarding at the Show. Fifteen years ago I have founded the Color Bred Canary Club of New York and I am serving as President since inception. On the year 2004 I became a Certified Color Bred Judge, then in 2014, the Stafford Association awarded me the certification as Judge. I have judged shows in USA and Canada. I truly enjoy breeding, showing and judging. I have been pleased with success of my birds at shows. I would like to thank you all of you for the opportunity to judge your Show.

Finch Judge Laura Watkins

My bird journey started when I was a child, as my moth-er always seemed to have a canary or pair of finches in the kitchen for company. After the typical childhood budgie, and then a cockatiel, I acquired a pair of Green Singing Finch which raised babies in my dining room! That began my fascination with Finches, and I began breeding them in earnest in 1992 after I built my first backyard aviary. Since then I’ve successfully raised over 20 different species of finches from Zebras to Grassfinches and Waxbills, as well as Diamond Doves, Button Quail and a few hookbills. I became interested in showing after attending an NCBS show and a Zebra specialty show, both in California. I later learned to Steward at the shows, and became an NFSS judge in 2013. I love judging, as it gives me the opportunity to not only recognize and reward breeding excellence, husbandry and showmanship, but to also ed-ucate hobbyists, breeders and the general public about birds and their place in our homes and lives. The best part? Making new friends, and reconnecting with old friends!

Type Judge Jim Pickel

I have been raising birds most of my life. As a child in Kansas, I raised pigeons, pheasants, quail, and other assorted fowl. For the past 32 years, I have been raising and showing type canaries, colorbred canaries and finches. Aside from numerous Best in Show awards for both type canaries and finches, I have also won Kellogg awards in both: Best Gloster in 1988 and Best Type with a Fife Canary in 1989. I have been judging for 30 years includ-ing five U.S. National Cage Bird Shows and several Canadian Shows, as well as the 2000 Canadian Nationals held in Windsor. I have been an officer of numerous bird clubs, Presi-dent of the Midwest Pheasant and Waterfowl Society, a past President of the American Chapter of the IGBA and am currently the President of the Old Variety Canary Associa-tion. I have also served on the U.S. National Cage Bird Club’s Board of Directors. I am presently raising Fifes, Northern and South-ern Dutch Frills, Borders, Irish Fancy, Scott Fancy and Lizard canaries.

Standard

The standard of perception for the breed, as laid down by the Crested Canary Club, is as follows: Size and formation of crest shall be the first considera-tion. A crest cannot be too large. It should consist of an abundance of broad, long and veiny feathers evenly radiated from a small center well over eyes, beak and poll. A good crest may be flat if well filled in at the back and without splits, but a drooping or weeping crest shall have preference. The body should in shape resemble that of a bullfinch possessing substance in proportion to its length with a broad back, nicely arched, full and well circled chest, tail short and nar-row wings not extending beyond root of tail, nor crossed at tips, but fitting closely to the body. The neck should be full and the beak short. The bird should stand well across the perch on short legs, with thighs and hocks well set back. The Crest-bred should possess a body as above

described. The head should be large and round broad at every part, with a small beak and an abundance of long, broad feathers commencing at entrance of beak, continu-ing over the crown and flowing well down the poll and should be well browed. In a good Crest-bred the feathers of the crown when turned over should reach the end of the beak, the heavy brow should give the bird a sulky appearance without brushing. When two or more birds are of equal merit in crest or head properties the smaller bird shall take precedence, if it is of the correct type, the Club recognizing it to be more difficult to obtain, but no restriction whatever is placed on the length of the bird. Class 6603 The German Crest has a special place between the color-bred and type canar-ies. It combines the color qualities of the color-bred canary with a crest that is unique to the breed. CREST Conforming to the oval head shape, the crest radiates from a clearly defined small center point. Observed from the side the edge of the crest reaches the beak and continues to the neck in a slightly wavy line. The continuation into the neck feathers is smooth with no gaps or breaks. The eye is evident (obvious). COLOR The color characteristics have the same requirements as in the color-bred ca-naries. Spots (pied, brindle coloring) is not permitted. The crest color on lipochrome birds is bright and clear, dark, or mottled. TYPE The body shape conforms to that of the color-bred birds. The wings should lie close to the body without crossing. FEATHER The feather should not show any gaps or breaks and lie smoothly on the body. The tail is neatly closed, symmetrical and very slightly notched. The length of the tail has to fit with (balance) the body. SIZE The is size is 13.5 to 14.5 centimeters. STANCE The stance is approximately 45 degrees with relation to the perch. The birds should be alert, but not agitated. GENERAL EFFECT The bird is clean, in good condition and shows that it is accustomed to the cage. In this category even the cleanliness of the cage is a consideration.

color, with only the melanistic coloring of the dark under flu distinguishing it as a self bird, not a clear bird. (When the Satinette also has striations, it is then called Isabel Satinette. Here, the brown melanistic pigmentation is in a striated formation with ground color between. The ruby eyes determine if the bird is an Isabel Satinette or a black-eyed Isabel). Self A bird with melanistic pigmentation on all of its feathers, legs, feet and beak. 3 Part Parts Dark A bird showing only one quarter of its body with light feathering. Ticked A clear bird having a mark on its body coverable by a penny. ("one pence piece") Unflighted A bird that has not moulted its flight feathers. Current year bird. (In Eng-land, a bird is not color-fed until after the fledgling moult and therefore it's primary flight feathers will appear white to pale yellow against the red or rose ground color. This obvious contrast is a sure sign of this being a current year's bird, in a country where closed bands are not used for dating birds.) Variegated A clear bird showing any form of melanistic markings on it's feathers, from a tick to 3 parts dark. Cinnamon Another term used for a brown. Often used to describe variegated brown birds, e.g., "a cinnamon crested, frosted, variegated cinnamon and rose hen". Clear A bird showing no melanistic pigmentation of its body. (Check the under flu feathers. A satinette appears clear but the under flu is dark.) The crest can be clear, grizzle or dark. Crested A growth of feathers radiating from a central point on the head. One of two partners in a breeding pair. Dark Crested A crest of dark feathers (Black, Brown/Cinnamon). Dimorphic A very broad feather that extends the amount of frosting on the edges of the feather. Dimorphism exhibits two distinct forms of feather pattern for the cock and hen, may appear in clear, variegated and self varieties. (What appears to be a clear red or rose fledging, in the Summer/Fall moult will turn white with red markings). Flighted A bird having moulted its flight feathers, (over 18 months old). Foul A self-bird having up to three light feathers in either its wings or tail. Frosted A bird showing white frosting on the tips of it's feathers. Grizzle A term to describe melanistic markings in the crest, appearing as a salt and peppery crest Ino A self-bird having chocolate brown melanistic pigmentation in a spangled for-mation and red eyes in a recessive (non-sex linked) factor, therefore without albinism. (The non-pigmented is a red eye, clear red lipochrome and is called a Rubino). Isabel A self-bird. A diluted brown (cinnamon) bird. Isabel Satinette (See Satinette) Mosaic A term used interchangeably with dimorphic. However, there is a dramatic difference. The male markings in a new type Mosaic are brighter and more extensive than in the old type dimorphic male markings. In the clear Mosaic variety, both male and female show more ground color contrasted with more distinct red markings. Non-Crested A Stafford without a crest but with a round head, which sustains the round crest. One of two partners in a breeding pair. Not interchangeable with the Col-or Bred Red ground canary. Non-Frosted A bird that shows no frosting on its feather tips. Opal A self-bird characterized by the inhibition of brown, having gray/blue strated melanistic pigmentation. the dark, melanistic color appears in the underside of the feathers, while the outer feather have a milky gray/blue glaze. Pastel A paling or dilute factor called ivory in the lipochrome and pastel in the mela-nin. The first reduction in black and brown melanin pigment produces agate, the sec-ond reduction is the Pastel. In the self, appears as a suffusion of brown melanistic pig-mentation covering the entire plumage.

Crested

The crest feathers should radiate from a small circle at the center of the top of the head and should finish level with the top of the eye. There should not be an obvious break at the back of the head where the crest meets the neck.

Non-Crested The head should have a broad well rounded appearance from whatever angle it is viewed. The forehead should have a good rise above the beak. The curve of the head should continue to rise to the center of the skull, giving the head a nice rounded ap-pearance. The forehead should be broad as the head is behind the eye. And finally the head should have a browy appearance with heavy feathering above the eye.
