Commencement Speaker

E. Gordon Gee

E. Gordon Gee became the 11th president of The Ohio State University on September 1, 1990.

Dr. Gee serves as chief executive officer of the University which includes the central campus in Columbus, regional campuses in Lima, Mansfield, Marion, and Newark, and OSU/ATI.

OSU has 19 colleges and a graduate school and is home to a state-wide, agricultural research and cooperative extension system. The University has nearly 60,000 students, over 4,400 faculty, more than 12,500 staff, and an annual budget of $1.16 billion.

Born in Vernal, Utah, in 1944, he received a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Utah in 1968 and a law degree and doctorate in education from Columbia University in 1971 and 1972, respectively. At Columbia, he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and Kellogg Fellow.

Dr. Gee returned to the University of Utah, serving as assistant law dean from 1973 to 1974. He served as judicial fellow and senior staff assistant in the chambers of the Chief Justice of the United States from 1974 to 1975. He was associate law dean and professor of law in the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young Universiity from 1975 to 1979.

Dr. Gee was dean of the law school from 1979 to 1981, when he became the 19th president of West Virginia University.

In 1985, Dr. Gee became the 15th president of the University of Colorado.

A recipient of several prestigious honors in the fields of law and education, Dr. Gee is listed among the Outstanding Young Men in America, Who's Who in Law, and Who's Who in America. He has written or co-written six books, including "Information Literacy: Revolution in the Library," which won the American Library Association G.K. Hall Award in 1990 for outstanding contribution to library literature.

He serves on numerous boards and commissions including: the Board of Directors of the American Council on Education; the Advisory Council of Presidents to the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges; the Board of Trustees of the New York Law School; and the Corporate Board of the Central Ohio Council of Boy Scouts.

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Gee as speaker for OSU/ATl's 18th commencement.

Director's Award Recipient

Dale E. Keller

Dale E. Keller, will graduate today from The Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute with a major in Dairy Cattle Production and Management. He is the recipient of the 1991 Director's Award and is Outstanding Technology Student in Dairy Cattle Production and Management. As part of the honor, Mr. Keller will give a student address titled, "Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow."

Mr. Keller was named to the Director's List every quarter and was awarded scholarships from COBA, NOSA, MMI, and the Farm Bureau. He is president of the Dairy Club, a member and public relations secretary for Phi Theta Kappa, the honorary scholastic fraternity, and has been an active tutor in various subjects while at the Institute.

He is a recipient of the State Farmer's Degree and placed tenth in the nation last year at the National FFA Convenfon. He took first place individual honors in the 1990 state competition and was named the FFA Star Chapter Farmer in 1990. He is also the holder of a Home and Farmstead Improvement Award.

His community involvement has earned him a Congressional Medal

of Honor and other local, community service awards.

After graduation, Mr. Keller hopes to become more involved in local organizations such as the Young Farmers and the local chapter of the Holstein Association. He hopes to find employment as a herdsman, but has not ruled out the possibility of continuing his education in agricultural economics or veterinary science. His ultimate goal is to own and operate a dairy farm.

"I realize that starting my own dairy farm is a very large goal, but with a lot of determination and a step-wise plan, I can and will make it happen."

We are proud to present Dale E. Keller, recipient of the coveted Director's Award, as the student speaker at OSU/ATI's 18th commencement.

Congratulations from the Director

You and I have often heard the old and proven statement that people make the difference. Even more so, it is educated people that make the biggest difference.

We are tremendously proud of the difference the graduates of The Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute are making. As the newest graduates, you are entering the manpower force of this country at a time when we, as a nation, are challenged with national and global issues.

The faculty and I have never been more confident of your ability to achieve than we are at this moment. That confidence is built on the successes of the graduates before you. This is a special day for all of us at OSU/ATI as well as you, your family and friends.

Your future is calling. Your opportunities are truly great. Education and continuing education will give you your edge. I leave you with a plea to keep in touch, we want to hear from you. Congratulations to each of you.

Sincerely,

Dan D. Garrison Associate Dean, College of Agriculture Director,OSU/ATI
