Brief description & notable features: Dark grey bark, growing to 10 metres. Its leaves are three-lobed, sharply toothed, and with long, pointed tips. Small, greenish flowers appear in April/May. Reddish fruit when young.

Small and spreading with grey-brown bark. Bright green, oval, toothed leaves. The flowers are greenish-white. Deep red fruit in early autumn. Early leaf drop with no significant colour.

A dainty-leaved and elegant evergreen with mid-green, alternate, simple leaves. The flowers appear in spikes. Brown nuts.

Compact, columnar shape. Noted for its dense dark green summer foliage that clusters at the branch tips. Yellow leaves in autumn.

A cultivar of common holly with purple-grey bark and twisted, thick leathery leaves with few or no spines except for a sharp pointed tip. Male clone. No fruit.

A small tree often without thorns. Brown, coarse, scaled bark. Deeply cut leaves, dark green above and grey underneath, with fine hairs. White flowers followed by large red haws.

An upright small tree, with brown or grey rough-textured bark. Wedge-shaped, toothed leaves, deeply lobed. White, cream or pink flower clusters followed by large red haws.

A cultivar of the Common hawthorn, Crataegus monogyna, with a weeping shape. It has pink flowers in late spring and red haws in late summer.

A small tree with deeply cut leaves with lobes toothed at the tips. In spring it has white flowers. The fruits are red haws.

Reaches 4m by 4m. White flowers have an aromatic scent which later have an unpleasant, rotten odour to attract midges for fertilisation. Bright red haws in autumn.

Cardinal Royal has bright red berries (hence cardinal) and an upright and compact shape. Creamy-white spring flowers and dark green leaflets turning orange. Grows up to 10m.

A small pyramidal tree. Its leaves are narrower than most apples and with occasional lobes on new growth. Pale pink flowers are followed by yellow-orange fruits.

Malus x purpurea ‘Oporto’ has vivid red spring flowers, purple-red foliage and small purple-red fruits.

A small tree with a spreading crown. Purplish young leaves greening later. Large, rose-pink flowers produced mid-April. Glossy, purplish fruits about 1.5 in long in August.

Malus scheideckeri ‘Excellenz Theil’ is small and very pendulous. It has semi double flowers, deep pink in bud and opening white-pink.

A small, spreading tree with drooping branches. Grey-green leaves in spring maturing to bright green. White flowers tinged with pink. 2 to 3cm round apples, yellow with a red-orange flush.

Malus ‘Cheltenham’ occurs in planting records for Bute Park and Dyffryn Gardens, Vale of Glamorgan, both trees are believed to have been planted in the 1960s, but no other examples of this cultivar are known to exist. At Bute Park the name appears on original maps of the arboretum made by William Nelmes Senior.

Prunus ‘Sunset Boulevard’ PRUE-nus ‘Sunset Boulevard’ 2013, H & G, 1995-96, M Frazer (Donated by Cantonian High School)
A narrow, conical tree, becoming oval. Its leaves emerge coppery in colour, turning green then golden yellow. Long lasting flowers appear in pairs with the leaves, white tinged with pink.

A small deciduous tree with a spreading habit and light bronze-green young foliage. Shell-pink, rounded double flowers in pendulous, long-stalked clusters in mid-spring.

Prunus ‘Yedo Zakura’ PRUE-nus ‘Yed-o Za-KUR-a’ 2005, G, 1950’s, W Nelmes Snr
A small upright tree. Broadly oblong, serrated leaves, coppery-brown, maturing to green. Flowers before the leaves emerge, in early April. The flowers are semi-double, pink or white, opening from deep red buds.
