LAVISH GENEROSITY – Today’s parable highlights a common human

struggle. Those who worked all day were jealous that those who worked only one hour received the same pay for their labor. They thought that it was unfair, that they deserved more. It highlights that God loves all his children lavishly, that his generosity is without measure and that his mercy knows no limits. On Mission for The Church Alive! calls us to seek to love with the heart of God, to look beyond our own wants and ensure that all can have their

needs provided for. While this process will result in changes for our parishes, the ability of the Church to take care of the needs of her people will grow stronger. Trust that God will always provide for you. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more about it and to stay informed.

A second collection will be added next week. Checks may be payable to the Diocese of

Pittsburgh with “Hurricane Irma” in the memo field. Please give generously.

FR. JASON CHARRON

This Sunday we welcome Fr. Jason Charron as our guest and priest for the 9:30 and 11:30 Masses. Fr. Jason is pastor of Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Carnegie. He and his wife Halyna have six daughters: Sophia, Maria, Katya, Daria, Martha, and Natalia. The photo of Fr. Jason is from Good Friday of this year, when he led Carnegie-area churches in a procession honoring our crucified Lord. Meanwhile, at St. Paul Cathedral this Sunday, parishioner Vince Bellini receives the Manifesting the Kingdom award from Bishop David Zubik. You read about Vince’s award in last week’s bulletin, but I now extend to Vince my own congratulations. Thank you for your exemplary service to Christ and his Church!

I’m trying to help a friend with a research project, and I in turn need help doing so. My friend studies atheists, agnostics, and otherwise non-religious people, and he’s currently working on their politics. He reports that it’s easy to find non-religious people who self-identify as “liberal,” but not so easy to find those who self-identify as “conservative” or “Republican.” If you know of such persons among your friends or family, and they’d be available for an evening interview on October 28, I’d appreciate an introduction.

Fr. Robin will bless animals next Sunday, October 1, at 1:00 p.m., at our pavilion on the corner of 3rd Avenue and 4th Street. The blessing traditionally falls on or near the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, observed this year mid-week.

In our series of histories of the parishes in our grouping On Mission for The Church Alive!, this week’s is from Our Lady of Grace Parish.

Our annual Ritual Mass of the Anointing of the Sick is planned for Sunday, October 1, at 11:30 a.m. If you plan to receive the sacrament of Anointing at that Mass, please do our volunteer help a favor by registering in advance. Email the parish office at [email protected] or call us at 412-276-1011 ext. 210. The deadline for registration is Monday, September 25.

I invite you to join me for dinner on Wednesday, November 1, at 7:00 (after the 6:00 holy day Mass). The dinner is in celebration of SEAS Parish’s 25th anniversary. I ask you to give $25 to help defray the cost of the dinner.

HEARTS SPEAK TO HEARTS

Living As Missionary Disciples (…continued!)

Last Sunday we observed as SEAS community the very important Catechetical Sunday, with the theme

of “Living As Missionary Disciples”, where we celebrated and thanked in advance our volunteers who

help parents teach their children about our beautiful faith. Our devoted catechists have now been

commissioned or re-commissioned for their ministry. This sharing of the faith, this “Living As Missionary

Disciples”, also involves the rest of us. We, too, need to re-dedicate ourselves to the mission.

The New Evangelization calls each of us, baptized Catholics, to commit ourselves to growing in our

prayer life, to learning more about our faith, and to sharing that faith. The need for ongoing formation

and catechesis is not just for the young. Before we can share our faith with others, we must attend to

our own growth and understanding of it in a responsible manner.

For adults here in our parish we have many ways to grow in relationship with God, Church, and

neighbor … too many to name! For starters, in the area of Evangelization, here are just a few:

Our Parish website, featuring educational and informative clips from Bishop Robert Barron and from

Catholic News Service, as well as diocesan info.

Contact the Pastoral Associates to determine what programs on dvd we have (such as

“Catholicism”, “The Bible Timeline”, “Divine Mercy”) to loan.

FORMED.org, an amazing formation program with HUNDREDS of Catholic videos, movies, e-books,

audio recordings, to which our parish subscribes. Just for starters, try listening to the 70-minute

“Evangelizing Catholics” talk by Dr. Scott Hahn, or “Set All Afire” by various speakers, while you’re

driving, or out for a walk, or doing the dishes. Or sit down and treat yourself by watching “The Three

Secrets Of Sharing The Faith” or “How To Win An Argument Without Losing A Soul”. (Remember, our

parish code is 8ZWH7W!) While you’re at FORMED.org, check out the astounding quantity and

quality of movies, books, etc. Then, take advantage!

Learn, grow, and then share!

SPECIAL NOTE: Masses scheduled for September 2018 or later are subject to modification based on the policies of the Diocese of Pittsburgh in relation to On Mission for the Church Alive!

Anticipated changes in all parishes’ Mass schedules may result in modifications to Mass intention requests from September 2018 on, such as: postponing the time and date of the Mass

intention; relocating the mass intention to another church in

the grouping; and or sharing a single Mass with more than one

intention, for the duration of the remedy.

Parish Histories

Like many other parishes in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Our Lady of Grace Parish was established after World War II to accommodate the demographic shift of families moving out of the city neighborhoods to the new suburban homes being built on old farmlands. Fr. Oliver Keefer was the founding pastor of OLG in 1947. He erected the first building in 1954, that served as both a church and school. For the next few years as the parish population grew, the building expanded in three phases: 1956, 1958 and 1960, on the 16-acre sprawling property. With a vibrant, growing parish, a full school and cafeteria to accommodate grades K-8, and ample grounds for parking, the new pastor, Monsignor Michael Conroy built the new church and rectory in 1963; holding 1,300 people, with its unique wrap-around balcony and semi-circular seating. Two additional buildings were added for the sisters who taught in the school during the expansion, which are now utilized for offices, a parish library, meeting rooms and a residence. While Fr. Ted Rutkowski was pastor, a large gymnasium was built in the early 1990’s, to add an additional athletic facility to the existing football/soccer/softball field used by both elementary and high school students. Finally, in 2007, the 60th anniversary year of OLG, the parishioners built a beautiful grotto to Our Lady of Grace in the center of the property which has become a center of prayer and devotion for the community. The life of any parish, though, is more than its grounds and buildings, its fields and facilities. The parishioners of Our Lady of Grace combine a wonderful spirit of volunteerism with a deep Catholic sensibility that expresses itself in numerous catechetical programs, apostolates, fundraising efforts, school initiatives and sacramental celebrations flowing from the Sunday Eucharist. The six-day parish festival held the week of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven in August, is a wonderful example of OLG’s outreach into the larger community as thousands of our friends and neighbors join us for this joyful week of fun, food, games, rides and fellowship. The Lenten fish fries are another example of how hundreds of parishioners volunteer to help the parish prepare and host guests observing the discipline of abstaining from meat on the Fridays of Lent. Recently, OLG added another community festival: the Pentecost Sacred Arts Festival which is growing into a regional celebration of the sacred arts: visual, literary and musical. The OLG Catholic School has always been at the heart of the parish life from the 1950s and 1960s, through the year 2000 and into this new century where our commitment to Catholic education for our children and the children of our neighboring communities still flourishes. Begun in 1954 and in continuous operation the past 63 years, we are proud to be a parish school that has functioned as a defacto regional school for the past generation, welcoming students from a dozen different school districts over the years, as well as those from other Catholic parishes who had to close their schools over the past decade, or so. This brief description provides a profile and some background about the 5,800 people who worship and

thrive at Our Lady of Grace Parish. But, like all of the four parishes in our grouping, at the heart of our

parish’s life is the Lord Jesus, who animates our prayer, our worship, our faith and our fellowship with

each other and all those with whom, in the future, we may be one.

HERE’s how to take part at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish:

Sign up in Holy Family Hall to join with other SEAS parishioners as we pray

together against the evils of abortion in front of the Planned Parenthood Abortion

Facility in downtown Pittsburgh on SEAS Day, 10/10/17 from 3:00-7:00 p.m. You can

come downtown for whatever time segment fits your schedule. Come alone, or with

a friend, or with your whole family! At least one of the core group will be there,

waiting to pray with you!

Consider backing us up on SEAS Day by committing to pray from your home for a

certain amount of time during our 3:00-7:00 shift. Call Sue at 412-561-1347 and

leave a message to let us know when and what you'll be praying! (If you want a

return call, say so on your message.) Rosaries (for Life) are recommended, but Divine

Mercy Novenas, the St. Michael the Archangel prayer, as well as any other prayers

will be appreciated! This is a new activity for us this year. Help us to make it a

success, especially if you are unable to go downtown to pray!

Make a commitment to pray Rosaries for Life and for the many people involved

with and affected by the issue of abortion. The 40 Days For Life Campaign is hoping

to be backed up by ongoing Rosaries for Life throughout the length of the Campaign,

which runs from Wednesday, 9/27 through Sunday, 11/5. Again, you may call Sue at

412-561-1347 to register your commitment of times and dates of your Rosary-

praying!

Together, through the power of prayer, we can make a SEAS-difference in saving babies from abortion and energizing the culture of life!

ST. ANNE PARISH A presentation entitled "Loving Someone with an Addiction" will be sponsored by St. Anne Substance Abuse Ministry. Mr. Mark Joseph will be our guest speaker Monday, October 2 from 7:00 p.m. till 9:00 p.m. at St Anne Parish. The presentation will offer hope filled support in the form of practical information and the power of shared experiences. No cost. For more information 412-531-5964 or stanneparish.com.
