Technical Specification

1 Description1.1 Voltex is a waterproofing membrane, approximately 6.4 mm thick, consisting of two polypropylene geotextiles, a woven fabric and non-woven fabric, enclosing granular sodium bentonite at a minimum weight of 4.88 kgm–2. The two geotextiles are interlocked by a needle-punching process pushing fibres from the non-woven layer through and beyond the woven layer. This process links the geotextiles and contains and confines the bentonite (see Figure 1).

Figure 1 Cross-section through Voltex

woven geotextile needle-punched geotextile fibres

non-woven geotextile granular Volclay sodium bentonite

1.2 Voltex is manufactured in a controlled continuous process in which partially-hydrated bentonite granules are uniformly distributed between woven and non-woven geotextiles. A needle-punching process is applied, linking the geotextiles together and securing the bentonite granules within the membrane.

1.3 Other components used with Voltex include:Waterstop RX — a black-extruded strip of sodium bentonite/butyl rubber backed with a silicone release paper and • used as a water bar in construction joints and in conjunction with VoltexBentoseal — a trowel-grade sodium bentonite compound used for detailing work, eg around penetrations• Voltex Granules — a loose form of granular sodium bentonite used to prevent the seepage of water from backfill • material or mixed with water and used as a paste for sealing.

1.4 Quality control is exercised over raw materials, during manufacture and on the final products.

2 Delivery and site handling2.1 Voltex is supplied in 1.1 m wide by 5.0 m long rolls on pallets of 35 rolls, stacked horizontally and shrink wrapped. Each roll weighs between 33 kg to 38.5 kg(1).

2.2 Coils of Waterstop RX, 25 mm by 19 mm are packaged in cartons. Each carton contains six coils of 5 m length(1), each box weighs 25 kg.

2.3 Bentoseal is supplied in 14.25 litre tubs(1), each tub weighs 18 kg.

2.4 Voltex Granules are supplied in 20 kg bags.2.5 The product and components must be stored in dry conditions, under cover and away from the possibility of damage or premature contact with water. Waterstop RX should also be stored away from direct heat.(1) Weights and sizes are subject to change, users are advised to consult current manufacturer’s literature.

Assessment and Technical Investigations

The following is a summary of the assessment and technical investigations carried out on Voltex.

Design Considerations

3 Use3.1 Voltex is satisfactory for use in waterproofing and damp-proofing underground reinforced concrete structures, and is satisfactory for Type A reinforced concrete basement construction grades 2, 3 and 4 as defined in Table 1 of BS 8102 : 1990.

3.2 The membrane stops the passage of water between the membrane and the concrete structure to which it is fixed. The membrane must be adequately confined to ensure a watertight seal is achieved in service.

3.3 Waterstop RX is satisfactory for use as a water bar in reinforced concrete construction joints, on Type B constructions as defined in Table 1 of BS 8102 : 1990. It is also used as an accessory in structures waterproofed with Voltex.

3.4 Waterstop RX is not designed for use in movement joints.

3.5 The product and components must never remain permanently exposed.

4 Practicability of installation4.1 The system should only be installed by contractors who have been trained and approved by the Certificate holder.

4.2 The membrane is easy to handle and can be cut using a sharp knife.

4.3 Voltex may be applied under most normal site conditions, including subzero temperatures and during heavy rainfall. Under wet conditions the system can withstand light construction traffic without significant extrusion of the bentonite. Slight losses at the exposed edges of a lap joint will not impair the watertightness, provided the conditions given in section 12.3 are met. Any bentonite that extrudes from the membrane will become slippery when wet which can have an adverse effect on site safety.

4.4 Waterstop RX should not be applied during heavy rainfall or where there is free-standing water.

5 Resistance to water and water vapourThe system provides an effective barrier to the passage of liquid water and water vapour from the ground.

6 Resistance to puncturingThe polypropylene geotextiles containing the bentonite are robust and resistant to normal site activities. The dropping of heavy articles will normally have no damaging effect on the membrane. Any accidental cuts will self heal when the membrane is hydrated following correct installation, provided that bentonite material is not lost from the edges of the cut. If it is thought that bentonite material has been lost, Bentoseal can be applied over the damaged area or, if the damage is more extensive, the membrane should be replaced with fresh Voltex.

7 Chemical resistance7.1 The gelling of sodium bentonite is adversely affected by the presence of electrolytes (particularly trivalent ions) and may also be affected by the presence of soluble cations such as those found in chalk or lime soils. In such cases advice should be sought from the Certificate holder.

7.2 The membrane is not affected by organic contaminants.

7.3 In chemically-contaminated areas the membrane is hydrated by deliberate soaking with mains water and leaving for two to three hours before placing the backfill or pouring the concrete.

8 Resistance to loadingProvided the membrane is adequately confined, properly hydrated and not subject to point loading, an installation beneath a foundation slab will transmit dead and imposed loads to the ground safely and without excessive deformation. In situations where point loading is anticipated the Certificate holder’s advice should be sought.

9 AdhesionWhen concrete is cast against the membrane the free ends of the needle-punched fibres become embedded in the concrete, creating a permanent bond between the concrete and membrane.

10 MaintenanceAs the system is confined by the concrete and has suitable durability (see section 11), maintenance is not required.

11 DurabilityA fully-protected Voltex membrane, when installed with the appropriate ancillary products, will provide an effective barrier to water and water vapour for the life of the building in which it is incorporated.

Installation

12 General12.1 Voltex is installed with the woven geotextile in contact with the concrete surface to be waterproofed.

12.2 The system bonds to poured concrete to form an integral seal to prevent water migration and requires no priming, fillets or protection boards.

12.3 The formation of a continuous waterproof barrier is achieved using lap joints with a minimum overlap of 100 mm between adjoining edges and roll ends. It is recommended to stagger laps at a minimum of 300 mm to avoid four sheets overlapping in one location. All lap joints are secured by either stapling laps together, or fixing them to the base with fasteners.

12.4 Sealing around protrusions through the membrane, eg at such details as piles and service pipes, is accomplished by cutting a hole in the membrane and fitting over the protrusion, bedding the membrane onto either Bentoseal or a paste made up, in situ, by mixing Voltex Granules with water.

13 ProcedureVoltexVertical surfaces13.1 Voltex can be installed either against the outside of existing walls, or preferably applied to the inside face of shuttering to be subsequently filled with poured concrete.

13.2 On cast concrete substrates, the product is aligned horizontally (although vertical alignment is possible) and fixed through the overlaps using proprietary washer-headed fasteners. When fixed to the inside face of shuttering, the product is aligned vertically (although horizontal alignment is possible) ensuring that all laps face down, away from the flow of the poured concrete. The overlaps are secured to the shuttering using nails or staples. A minimum overlap of 100 mm should be achieved between the vertical membrane and the membrane protruding from the base slab.

13.3 Backfilling should be carried out as soon as possible after placing the Voltex. Backfill material should be free from builders’ debris and angular aggregate, and should be compacted to a minimum 85% Modified Proctor.

13.4 After backfilling, the application of the membrane is continued. The membrane should not be installed above the intended final ground level and Voltex is terminated on the concrete structure at ground level.

Horizontal surfaces13.5 Surfaces to be waterproofed should be reasonably smooth and may be damp (but free from standing water). Earth and sand substrates should be compacted to a minimum 85% Modified Proctor.

13.6 At the edge of the slab the membrane should extend vertically a minimum of 300 mm above the top surface to form an overlap with the vertical membrane.

13.7 Overlaps should be stapled or nailed to prevent displacement during concrete placement.

13.8 The concrete slab to be poured should have a minimum thickness of 150 mm.

Waterstop RXSurface preparation13.9 Joint surfaces should be clean, dry and free from cavities and spalling. Any irregularities in the surface do not normally need to be filled. If required, these can be filled with a suitable strength cement grout or mortar while the concrete is still green, and made smooth.

13.10 Waterstop RX is positioned in the centre of the reinforced concrete construction joint, ensuring that a minimum of 75 mm concrete cover is provided to all sides of the product.

Installation13.11 A strip of Waterstop RX is uncoiled and placed in position leaving the release paper temporarily intact so it can be pushed firmly in place into any undulations in the concrete surface (see Figure 2). Once sufficient product is positioned, the release paper is removed.

13.12 Continuity of consecutive strips is maintained by butt jointing.

13.13 To prevent movement during concrete placement, the strips of Waterstop RX are covered by placing Revofix mesh over the product. The successive lengths of mesh are overlapped and fixed using nails at each overlap and at a spacing of approximately 300 mm in between.

Swelling13.14 If the material exhibits considerable swelling prior to confinement in the joint, it must be replaced with new material.

Concrete casting13.15 Casting of retaining walls and floor slabs is carried out immediately after fixing Waterstop RX in position.

Technical Investigations

14 TestsVoltex14.1 A trial installation was built and observations were made of the ease of installation at corners, laps and around obstructions, and the rate and pattern of water penetration.

Technical Specification

1 Description1.1 Voltex DS is a waterproofing membrane, approximately 6.4 mm thick, consisting of two polypropylene geotextiles, a woven fabric and non-woven fabric, enclosing granular sodium bentonite at a minimum weight of 4.88 kgm–2. The two geotextiles are interlocked by a needle-punching process pushing fibres from the non-woven layer through and beyond the woven layer. This process links the geotextiles and contains and confines the bentonite. An HDPE liner is integrally bonded to the non-woven geotextile (see Figure 1).

Figure 1 Cross-section through Voltex DS

1.2 Voltex DS is manufactured in a controlled continuous process. Quality control tests are carried out on the separate components of the system, and on the finished membrane.

1.3 Other components used with Voltex DS include:Waterstop RX — a black, extruded strip of sodium bentonite/butyl rubber backed with a silicone release paper and • used as a water bar in construction joints and in conjunction with Voltex DSBentoseal — a trowel-grade sodium bentonite compound used for detailing work, eg around penetrations• Voltex Granules — a loose form of granular sodium bentonite used to prevent the seepage of water from backfill • material or mixed with water and used as a paste for sealing.

1.4 Quality control is exercised over raw materials, during manufacture and on the final products.

2 Delivery and site handling2.1 Voltex DS is supplied in 1.1 m wide by 5.0 m long rolls on pallets of 35 rolls, stacked horizontally and shrink wrapped. Each roll weighs between 35 kg to 40 kg(1).

2.4 Voltex Granules are supplied in 20 kg bags.

2.5 The product and components must be stored in dry conditions, under cover and away from the possibility of damage or premature contact with water. Waterstop RX should also be stored away from direct heat.(1) Weights and sizes are subject to change, users are advised to consult current manufacturer’s literature.

Assessment and Technical Investigations

The following is a summary of the assessment and technical investigations carried out on Voltex DS.

Page 18: CETCO Europe Ltd Agrément Certificate 86/1650...Voltex Granules a loose form of granular sodium bentonite used to prevent the seepage of water from backfill material or mixed with

Design Considerations

3 Use3.1 Voltex DS is satisfactory for use in waterproofing and damp-proofing underground reinforced concrete structures and is satisfactory for Type A reinforced concrete basement construction grades 2, 3 and 4 as defined in Table 1 of BS 8102 : 1990.

3.2 The membrane will not permit the passage of water between the membrane and the concrete structure to which it is fixed. The membrane must be adequately confined to ensure a watertight seal is achieved in service.

3.3 Waterstop RX is satisfactory for use as a water bar in reinforced concrete construction joints, on Type B constructions as defined in Table 1 of BS 8102 : 1990. It is also used as an accessory in structures waterproofed with Voltex DS.

4.3 Voltex DS may be applied under most normal site conditions, including subzero temperatures and during heavy rainfall.

6 Resistance to puncturingThe system is robust and resistant to normal site activities. The dropping of heavy articles will normally have no damaging effect on the membrane. Any accidental cuts will self heal when the membrane is hydrated following correct installation, provided that bentonite material is not lost from the edges of the cut. If bentonite material has or may have been lost, a patch of Voltex DS is applied, and secured by nailing over the damaged area, ensuring that the patch extends a minimum of 100 mm each side of the damaged area. If the damage is more extensive, the membrane should be replaced with fresh Voltex DS.

In situations where point loading is anticipated the Certificate holder’s advice should

be sought.

Page 19: CETCO Europe Ltd Agrément Certificate 86/1650...Voltex Granules a loose form of granular sodium bentonite used to prevent the seepage of water from backfill material or mixed with

11 DurabilityA fully-protected Voltex DS membrane, when installed with the appropriate ancillary products, will provide an effective barrier to water and water vapour for the life of the building in which it is incorporated.

Installation

12 General12.1 Voltex DS is installed with the woven geotextile in contact with the concrete surface to be waterproofed.

12.2 The system bonds to poured concrete to form an integral seal to prevent water migration and requires no priming, fillets or protection boards.

12.3 The formation of a continuous waterproof barrier is achieved using lap joints with a minimum overlap of 100 mm between adjoining edges and 300 mm between roll ends.

13 ProcedureVoltex DSVertical surfaces13.1 Voltex DS can be installed either against the outside of existing walls, or preferably applied to the inside face of shuttering to be subsequently filled with poured concrete.

13.3 Backfilling should be carried out as soon as possible after placing the Voltex DS. Backfill material should be free from builders’ debris and angular aggregate, and should be compacted to a minimum 85% Modified Proctor.

13.4 After backfilling, the application of the membrane is continued. The membrane should not be installed above the intended final ground level and Voltex DS is terminated on the concrete structure at ground level.

14 TestsTests were conducted to determine:

resistance of lap joints to water penetration • resistance to rainfall (natural exposure)• resistance to puncture damage • weight per unit area of the membrane• weight per unit area of bentonite.•

15 Investigations15.1 The manufacturing process was examined, and the raw material specifications and quality control procedures established.

15.2 An assessment was made of existing data relating to the performance of the bentonite geotextile.

15.3 An assessment was made of the original data resulting in the issue of Certificate 83/1081.

Assessment and Technical Investigations

The following is a summary of the assessment and technical investigations carried out on Redstop Waterstop.

Design Considerations

3 UseThe product is satisfactory for use as a water bar:

as part of a Volclay waterproofing installation, • for Type A basement construction grades 2, 3 and 4 as defined in Table 1 of BS 8102 : 1990, • for construction joints in reinforced concrete structures, or• for Type B structures as defined in BS 8102 to waterproof basements.•

4 Practicability of installation4.1 The system should only be installed by contractors who have been trained and approved by the Certificate holder.

4.2 Redstop Waterstop should not be applied during heavy rainfall or where there is free-standing water.

5 Resistance to water pressureBoth in its original condition and after hydration, Volclay Redstop Waterstop will provide an effective barrier to liquid water in construction joints of reinforced concrete.

6 MaintenanceAs the product is confined by the concrete and has suitable durability (see section 7), maintenance is not required.

7 DurabilityWhen fully protected, Redstop Waterstop, will provide an effective barrier to the transmission of liquid water in construction joints, for the life of the building in which it is incorporated.

Installation

8 General8.1 Redstop Waterstop should not be applied during heavy rainfall or where there is free-standing water.

8.2 The product is not designed for use in movement joints.

8.3 The product must never remain permanently exposed.

9 ProcedureSurface preparation9.1 Joint surfaces should be clean, dry and free from cavities and spalling. Any irregularities in the surface do not normally need to be filled. If required, these can be filled with a suitable strength cement grout or mortar while the concrete is still green, and made smooth.

9.2 Redstop Waterstop is positioned in the centre of the reinforced concrete construction joint, ensuring that a minimum of 75 mm concrete cover is provided to all sides of the product.

Installation9.3 A strip of Redstop Waterstop is uncoiled and placed in position leaving the release paper temporarily intact so it can be pushed firmly in place into any undulations in the concrete surface (see Figure 1). Once sufficient product is positioned, the release paper is removed.

Figure 1 Redstop Waterstop installation details

9.4 Continuity of consecutive strips is maintained by butt jointing.

9.5 To prevent movement during concrete placement, the strips of Redstop Waterstop are covered by placing Revofix mesh over the product. The successive lengths of mesh are overlapped and fixed using nails at each overlap and at a spacing of approximately 300 mm in between.

Swelling9.6 If the material exhibits considerable swelling prior to confinement in the joint, it must be replaced with new material.

Concrete casting9.7 Casting of retaining walls and floor slabs is carried out immediately after fixing Redstop Waterstop in position.

Technical Investigations

10 TestsThe following tests were carried out:

characterisation• resistance to hydrostatic pressure, and observations were made of the ease of installation, in particular around • obstructions.

11 Investigations11.1 Details were obtained of the manufacturing process, including the methods adopted for quality control.

11.2 Existing data on the effectiveness and durability of natural (Wyoming) sodium bentonite as a waterproofing membrane were examined.

11.3 Visits were made to a site in progress to assess the practicability of installation.

11.4 A survey of known users was conducted to assess the performance in use.

11.5 An assessment was made of the original data resulting in the issue of Certificate 83/1081.

Technical Specification

1 Description1.1 CombiSeal-T is a waterproofing membrane, approximately 6.4 mm thick, consisting of two polypropylene geotextiles, a woven fabric and non-woven fabric, enclosing granular sodium bentonite at a minimum weight of 4.88 kgm–2. The two geotextiles are interlocked by a needle-punching process pushing fibres from the non-woven layer through and beyond the woven layer. This process links the geotextiles and contains and confines the bentonite, an HDPE liner is integrally bonded to the non-woven geotextile, (see Figure 1).

Figure 1 Cross-section through CombiSeal-T

1.2 CombiSeal-T is manufactured in a controlled continuous process. Quality control tests are carried out on the separate components of the system, and on the finished membrane.

1.3 Other components used with CombiSeal-T include:Waterstop RX — a black, extruded strip of sodium bentonite/butyl rubber backed with a silicone release paper and • used as a water bar in construction joints and in conjunction with CombiSeal-TBentoseal — a trowel-grade sodium bentonite compound used for detailing work, eg around penetrations• Voltex Granules — a loose form of granular sodium bentonite used to prevent the seepage of water from backfill • material or mixed with water and used as a paste for sealing.

1.4 Quality control is exercised over raw materials, during manufacture and on the final products.

2 Delivery and site handling2.1 CombiSeal-T is supplied in 1.1 m wide by 5.0 m long rolls on pallets of 35 rolls, stacked horizontally and shrinkwrapped. Each roll weighs between 35 kg to 40 kg(1).

The following is a summary of the assessment and technical investigations carried out on CombiSeal-T.

Page 38: CETCO Europe Ltd Agrément Certificate 86/1650...Voltex Granules a loose form of granular sodium bentonite used to prevent the seepage of water from backfill material or mixed with

Design Considerations

3 Use3.1 CombiSeal-T is satisfactory for use in waterproofing and damp-proofing underground reinforced concrete structures and is satisfactory for Type A reinforced concrete basement construction grades 2, 3 and 4 as defined in Table 1 of BS 8102 : 1990.

It is also used as an accessory in structures waterproofed with CombiSeal-T.

4.3 CombiSeal-T may be applied under most normal site conditions, including subzero temperatures and during heavy rainfall.

If it is thought that bentonite material has been lost, a patch of CombiSeal-T is applied, and secured by nailing over the damaged area, ensuring that the patch extends a minimum of 100 mm each side of the damaged area. If the damage is more extensive, the membrane should be replaced with fresh CombiSeal-T.

In situations where point loading is anticipated the Certificate holder’s advice should be

sought.

11 DurabilityA fully-protected CombiSeal-T membrane, when installed with the appropriate ancillary products, will provide an effective barrier to water and water vapour for the life of the building in which it is incorporated.

Installation

12 General12.1 CombiSeal-T is installed with the woven geotextile in contact with the concrete surface to be waterproofed.

13 ProcedureCombiSeal-TVertical surfaces13.1 CombiSeal-T can be installed either against the outside of existing walls, or preferably applied to the inside face of shuttering to be subsequently filled with poured concrete.

13.3 Backfilling should be carried out as soon as possible after placing the CombiSeal-T. Backfill material should be free from builders’ debris and angular aggregate, and should be compacted to a minimum 85% Modified Proctor.

13.4 After backfilling, the application of the membrane is continued. The membrane should not be installed above the intended final ground level and CombiSeal-T is terminated on the concrete structure at ground level.

14 TestsTests were conducted to determine: • resistance of lap joints to water penetration • resistance to rainfall (natural exposure)

resistance to puncture damage • weight per unit area of the membrane• weight per unit area of bentonite.•

15 Investigations15.1 The manufacturing process was examined, and the raw material specifications and quality control procedures established.

15.2 An assessment was made of existing data relating to the performance of the bentonite geotextile.

15.3 An assessment was made of the original data resulting in the issue of Certificate 83/1081.hydraulic conductivity under water pressure • low-temperature flexibility• resistance to hydrostatic pressure • mechanical properties of the geotextiles• water vapour transmission through hydrated membrane.•

Design Considerations

3 Use3.1 Volclay Type 1 Panel is satisfactory for use in waterproofing and damp-proofing underground reinforced concrete structures and is satisfactory for Type A reinforced concrete basement construction grades 2, 3 and 4 as defined in Table 1 of BS 8102 : 1990.

3.2 The system stops the passage of water between the panel and the concrete structure to which it is fixed. The panel must be adequately confined to ensure a watertight seal is achieved in service.

3.3 Waterstop RX is satisfactory for use as a water bar in reinforced concrete construction joints, on Type B constructions as defined in Table 1 of BS 8102 : 1990. It is also used as an accessory in structures waterproofed with Volclay Type 1 Panel.

3.4 Waterstop RX is not designed for use in movement joints.

3.5 The product and components must never remain permanently exposed.

4 Practicability of installation4.1 The system should only be installed by contractors who have been trained and approved by the Certificate holder.

4.2 The panel is easy to handle and can be cut using a sharp knife.

4.3 Volclay Type 1 Panel may be applied under most normal site conditions, including subzero temperatures, but must not be installed during heavy rainfall.

4.4 Waterstop RX should not be applied during heavy rainfall or where there is free-standing water.

5 Resistance to water and water vapour5.1 The system provides an effective barrier to the passage of liquid water and water vapour from the ground.

5.2 A single layer of the panels with lap joints, will provide an effective barrier to the passage of liquid water up to 1 bar. At higher pressures, a double layer of panels, with staggered joints, will be required.

6 Resistance to puncturingIf a dry panel is punctured, provided no bentonite is lost, it will self-heal when hydrated. If bentonite is lost, the waterproofing properties of the panel will be reduced. However, these properties can be restored by applying a layer of Bentoseal or a second layer of panels to the damaged area or by replacement of the damaged panel.

7.2 The panel is not affected by organic contaminants.

7.3 In chemically-contaminated areas either a double layer of panels is used or the panels are hydrated by deliberate soaking with mains water. In badly contaminated areas both techniques are used.

8 Resistance to loadingProvided the panel is adequately confined, properly hydrated and not subject to point loading, an installation beneath a foundation slab will transmit dead and imposed loads to the ground safely and without excessive deformation. In situations where point loading is anticipated the Certificate holder’s advice should be sought.

9 Resistance to substrate movementThe panels are not bonded to the substrate and can thus accommodate any likely structural movement in service, eg differential settlement or movement at joints.

10 MaintenanceAs the system is confined by the concrete and has suitable durability (see section 11), maintenance is not required.

11 DurabilityA fully-protected Volclay Type 1 Panel, when installed with the appropriate ancillary products, will provide an effective barrier to water and water vapour for the life of the building in which it is incorporated.

Installation

12 General12.1 Surfaces to be waterproofed need not be clean and may be damp but must be free from cavities, projecting ribs and standing water.

12.2 Panels are cut as necessary to avoid pipes, conduits, ducts or other penetrations, but the continuity of the membrane is maintained by a 25 mm deep trowel application of Bentoseal.

12.3 At joints, Waterstop RX is included in the joint (see sections 13.8 to 13.14) or a proprietary water bar and an extra layer of Volclay Type 1 panels is applied (see Figure 2).

Figure 2 Concrete wall plan — proprietary water bar

13 ProcedureVolclay Type 1 PanelVertical surfaces13.1 Cracks wider than 1 mm and discontinuities are sealed with Bentoseal. Volclay Type 1 panels are then fixed to the foundation wall using hard nails, or are retained in position with backfill. Panels are overlapped up to the marked margin and, at corners, panels are bent along the line of the flutes. Where cut across the flutes, panels are wetted along the cut to prevent sodium bentonite loss.

13.2 A second course of Volclay Type 1 panels is installed, overlapping the first, with the joints staggered. When panels are not used under the structure, Hydrobar tubes are then laid at the base of the wall in accordance with the Certificate holder’s instructions (see Figure 3). Any discontinuities present in the membrane are sealed with a trowel application of Bentoseal.

Figure 3 Volclay Hydrobar Tube installation details

13.3 Normally, backfill is applied immediately. A bead of backfill is tamped over the Volclay Hydrobar Tube at the base and the backfill is applied and compacted to at least 85% Modified Proctor, to within 50 mm of the panels’ edge. Backfill must be well-graded, rounded material, not exceeding 50 mm and must be free from angular broken material; otherwise panels must be protected by boards. If backfill cannot be applied immediately, Volclay Type 1 panels are protected against rainfall by polythene sheet. Panels damaged mechanically or by wetting are replaced before backfilling.

Page 48: CETCO Europe Ltd Agrément Certificate 86/1650...Voltex Granules a loose form of granular sodium bentonite used to prevent the seepage of water from backfill material or mixed with

13.4 After backfilling, the application of Volclay Type 1 panels is continued. Panels must not be installed above the intended final ground level. The installation is completed with a flashing (or other technique).

Beneath the base of structures designed to resist hydrostatic pressure 13.5 The substrate is levelled and finished with a blinding of either 100 mm granular material or 50 mm concrete. Type 1 panels are laid, overlapping, with successive rows staggered. Volclay Type 1 panels may be protected from rainwater during installation with polythene sheet. Care is taken to avoid damage to the panels when the slab is poured and vibrated. A blinding screed is applied where heavy reinforcement is to be placed. Particular attention is necessary to ensure continuity of protection at junctions with walls (see Figure 4).

Figure 4 Hydrostatic structure

Volclay Type 1 panels

13.6 The concrete slab to be poured should have a minimum thickness of 150 mm.

On roofs of underground structures (tunnels, reservoirs, etc)13.7 Volclay Type 1 panels are overlapped, nailed in position, and covered with compacted earth, sand or gravel (maximum aggregate size 18 mm) with a minimum depth of 450 mm (if trafficking is not envisaged, a 300 mm depth of cover is adequate).

Waterstop RXSurface preparation13.8 Joint surfaces should be clean, dry and free from cavities and spalling. Any irregularities in the surface do not normally need to be filled. If required, these can be filled with a suitable strength cement grout or mortar while the concrete is still green, and made smooth.

13.9 Waterstop RX is positioned in the centre of the reinforced concrete construction joint, ensuring that a minimum of 75 mm concrete cover is provided to all sides of the product.

Installation13.10 A strip of Waterstop RX is uncoiled and placed in position leaving the release paper temporarily intact so it can be pushed firmly in place into any undulations in the concrete surface (see Figure 5). Once sufficient product is positioned, the release paper is removed.

13.11 Continuity of consecutive strips is maintained by butt jointing.

13.12 To prevent movement during concrete placement, the strips of Waterstop RX are covered by placing Revofix mesh over the product. The successive lengths of mesh are overlapped and fixed using nails at each overlap and at a spacing of approximately 300 mm in between.

Swelling13.13 If the material exhibits considerable swelling prior to confinement in the joint, it must be replaced with new material.

Concrete casting13.14 Casting of retaining walls and floor slabs is carried out immediately after fixing Waterstop RX in position.

Design Considerations

3 Use3.1 Volclay Type 1F Panel is satisfactory for use in waterproofing and damp-proofing underground reinforced concrete structures and is satisfactory for Type A reinforced concrete basement construction grades 2, 3 and 4 as defined in Table 1 of BS 8102 : 1990.

It is also used as an accessory in structures waterproofed with Volclay Type 1F Panel.

4.3 Volclay Type 1F Panel may be applied under most normal site conditions, including subzero temperatures, but must not be installed during heavy rainfall.

11 DurabilityA fully-protected Volclay Type 1F Panel, when installed with the appropriate ancillary products, will provide an effective barrier to water and water vapour for the life of the building in which it is incorporated.

12.3 At joints, Waterstop RX is included in the joint (see sections13.7 to 13.13) or a proprietary water bar and an extra layer of Volclay Type 1F panels is applied (see Figure 2).

Figure 2 Concrete wall plan — proprietary water bar

13 ProcedureVolclay Type 1F PanelVertical surfaces13.1 Cracks wider than 1 mm and discontinuities are sealed with Bentoseal. Volclay Type 1F panels are then fixed to the foundation wall using hard nails, or are retained in position with backfill. Panels are overlapped up to the marked margin and, at corners, panels are bent along the line of the flutes. Where cut across the flutes, panels are wetted along the cut to prevent sodium bentonite loss.

13.2 A second course of Volclay Type 1F panels is installed, overlapping the first, with the joints staggered. When panels are not used under the structure, Volclay Hydrobar Tubes are then laid at the base of the wall in accordance with the Certificate holder’s instructions (see Figure 3).

If backfill cannot be applied immediately, Type 1 panels are protected against rainfall by polythene sheet. Panels damaged mechanically or by wetting are replaced before backfilling.

13.4 After backfilling, the application of Volclay Type 1F panels is continued. Panels must not be installed above the intended final ground level. The installation is completed with a flashing (or other technique).

Beneath the base of structures designed to resist hydrostatic pressure 13.5 The Volclay Type 1F Panel is not normally recommended for this application and should not be use without prior consultation with the Certificate holder.

On roofs of underground structures (tunnels, reservoirs, etc)13.6 Volclay Type 1F panels are overlapped, nailed in position, and covered with compacted earth, sand or gravel (maximum aggregate size 18 mm) with a minimum depth of 450 mm (if trafficking is not envisaged, a 300 mm depth of cover is adequate).

Waterstop RXSurface preparation13.7 Joint surfaces should be clean, dry and free from cavities and spalling. Any irregularities in the surface do not normally need to be filled. If required, these can be filled with a suitable strength cement grout or mortar while the concrete is still green, and made smooth.

13.8 Waterstop RX is positioned in the centre of the reinforced concrete construction joint, ensuring that a minimum of 75 mm concrete cover is provided to all sides of the product.

Installation

13.9 A strip of Waterstop RX is uncoiled and placed in position leaving the release paper temporarily intact so it can be pushed firmly in place into any undulations in the concrete surface (see Figure 4). Once sufficient product is positioned, the release paper is removed.

Figure 4 Waterstop RX installation details

13.10 Continuity of consecutive strips is maintained by butt jointing.

13.11 To prevent movement during concrete placement, the strips of Waterstop RX are covered by placing Revofix mesh over the product. The successive lengths of mesh are overlapped and fixed using nails at each overlap and at a spacing of approximately 300 mm in between.

Swelling

13.12 If the material exhibits considerable swelling prior to confinement in the joint, it must be replaced with new material.

Concrete casting

13.13 Casting of retaining walls and floor slabs is carried out immediately after fixing Waterstop RX in position.

Technical Investigations

14 InvestigationsVolclay Type 1F Panel14.1 A test was carried out to compare the rate of hydration of the Volclay Type 1F panel to the Types 1 and 1C panels.

14.2 An assessment was made of the physical properties of the panel.

14.3 An assessment was made of the durability of the Volclay Type 1F panel using relevant data on natural sodium bentonite waterproofing products.

14.4 An assessment was made of the original data resulting in the issue of Certificate 83/1081.

Volclay Hydrobar Tubes 14.5 Volclay Hydrobar Tubes were included as part of a trial installation and rate of water penetration test conducted on Volclay panels.
