What do CETC54 want to do?

• Win large non-military export contracts– Last year $100M– Little profit from ASKAP

• Manufacture and install all of the SKA dishes– Manufacture in China, re-assemble on site

• Use their own fabrication technology– Session 12 tomorrow

• Do most, if not all, of the mechanical design– Also em design

• Manufacture feeds and receivers5

• Manufacture a mount to TDP design• Manufacture a complete antenna (DVAC) to the TDP

optics design, but using panels.• Virtually anything, if they thought it would lead to

getting the big contract?

What would CETC54 be prepared to do?

CETC54: strengths

• Enormous resources

• Engineers

• Skilled manpower

• Sub-contractors

• Excellent facilities

• Manufacturing

• Test ranges

• Anechoic chamber etc.

• Low labor cost

• Fast response

• Extensive satcom experience

• Willing to embrace and develop new designs (ASKAP)

CETC54: weaknesses

• Minimal radio astronomy experience• But JLRAT should help

• High noise designs• Used to working to satcom specs

• Attached to established in-house technologies and design solutions?• But may be persuaded to adopt new solutions

• Do it their way or not at all?• Resistant to suggestions about manufacture on site

What should we ask CETC54 to do?

• Build DVAC in parallel with DVA-1 to the same specification, but using panels.– Interesting test of alternative manufacturing

technique– Integrate and test where?– Funded by NAOC and CETC54?

• Manufacture the mount for DVA-1?– Only if funds are so short that this is the only

way to build DVA-1.

• Split from CETC54 in 1970s• Similar capabilities and resources• They have made hundreds of 9, 11 and 13

metre antennas.• Also keen to win ‘The SKA Contract’
