From scriptwriting to casting to directing to editing—collaborate with peers and professionals to produce either a 16mm or 35mm narrative film, or a digital documentary short. Open in spring, summer and fall.

Expand your portfolio—focus on analog techniques (large and medium format), darkroom developing and aesthetics. Exhibit your work in a gallery or café in the heart of Prague. Use your own 35mm camera. Open in spring and fall.

Create moving-image works “beyond cinema.” Explore video installation, conceptual artworks, intermedia performance, interactive work, experimental documentary, or expanded-to-database cinema. Open in spring.

All programs are based at the Film & Television School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU). All courses are taught in English. There is no language prerequisite, but previous experience within the program medium is strongly encouraged.

EXPLORING THE CITYStroll down cobblestone streets, and look up at elegant spires. Take the tram to an open-air market to buy fresh produce, or take the tram to the end of the line for no reason at all. Stop at a street vendor for a cup of mulled wine while hiking up to Prague Castle, or set an early alarm to see the stunning Charles Bridge at sunrise. Semester after semester, this gem of a city captures the hearts of students. They fall in love with Prague—its beauty, its history, its architecture, its accessibility, its people.

LOCAL ARTS SCENEPrague has long been on the cutting edge of creative movements—from avant-garde photography to New Wave film to multimedia performance. CET gives students the inside track to this art world: film festivals, experimental noise-rock concerts, exhibition previews. Some students step out of the audience and onto the stage themselves. Many exhibit their work at city venues, and one former student served on a Queer Film Festival judging panel, at the invitation of her professor.

CET students may share apartments with Czech roommates, collaborate on projects with Czech peers, or produce films with Czech production teams—managers, designers, technicians. Students soon find that their local

FILM PRODUCTION IN THE SUMMER TERMStudents work in groups to create a short, 16mm, dialogue-free narrative film using natural lighting. They take Film Technology & Practice for 100 hours and 6 credits, Czech Language for 21 hours and 1 credit, and attend the Karlovy Vary Film Festival.

SUMMER TERM IS OPEN TO STUDENTS WITH NO PREVIOUS FILM EXPERIENCE.

All of the programs are hosted by the renowned Film & Television School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, locally known as FAMU. FAMU boasts an impressive list of state-of-the-art resources—darkrooms, studios, projectors, cameras, a black box theater, full sound- and image-editing suites, a Virtual Reality CAVE environment.

I created one exhibit about sound…there were some very technical pieces, like an underwater microphone submerged in a fishbowl that played back the sounds of the room, or drone that generated sound as its position in space changed.…Before coming to Prague I was worried because the media I choose to work in are hard to categorize. Not only do I love Prague, but I am very happy with the work I am making here.

Guiding students through these resources are FAMU faculty, who take a hands-on approach to learning. Film students head to Barrandov Studios (the MGM of Prague) to conduct a transfer of their footage. Photography students work with photo models and learn the art of studio lighting. New Media students show their works-in-progress at “crit” sessions with instructors and peers.
