Dog Days of SummerCelebrate the dog days of summer with us at the Brennity!
We have several fun events planned for residents, family members, and friends. We will be making dog treats for the local humane society, humane society outing, yappy hour, dog costume contest, and even a pool party with popsicles!
Originally, the phrase actually had nothing to do with dogs, or even with the lazy days of summer. Instead, it turns out, the dog days refer to the dog star, Sirius, and its position in the heavens.
To the Greeks and Romans, the ‘dog days’ occurred around the day when Sirius appeared to rise just before the sun, in late July. They referred to these days as the hottest time of the year. We hope you will enjoy all the fun events we have planned!

The delightfully delectable papaya is a tropical fruit that is widely popular in Central America and Mexico, but can found in most markets when in season. It’s something one might dub “large and in charge.” Why? Several reasons. On average, a single papaya weighs roughly one pound, but obviously it can be much larger (or smaller). But a pound? That’s a decent-sized fruit right there. And it is fully in charge due to the massive health benefits the fruit offers. Here’s the short list:• The fr uit ’s f lesh is
easily digested since it contains a great deal of soluble fiber.
• It’s both cholesterol free and low calorie, and is packed with Vitamin C — as in, just 61 grams of the fruit provides more than one’s recommended daily value of Vitamin C. That’s more than the average orange provides. Plus, it’s also loaded with folic acid and potassium.
• In addition, papaya has been used as naturally-occurring remedy for a variety of stomach ailments and conditions like ringworm. This is likely because
it’s multifaceted, being analgesic with anti-parasitic and anti-inflammatory properties. With characteristics like this, it seems pretty logical to
consider incorporating papaya into your diet. So if you’re interesting in testing the proverbial papaya waters, here are a few things you should know:
• Green, hard papayas aren’t mature. Be sure not to eat the
immature fruit raw, as its insides are toxic. The fruit is said to be ripe and ready with a skin that’s amber to orange and
indents when you squeeze it gently. Remember the skin is totally inedible, too. • It can be used in more
than just fruit salads and smoothies. Papaya makes an
excellent salsa ingredient, and can be used in all sorts of poultry and seafood dishes.
Plus, papaya seeds can be substituted for peppercorns since the seeds are naturally a little spicy.
• Also note that some people are allergic to the milky coating inside a papaya, aka latex. So be extra cautious when handling for the first time. Otherwise, enjoy!
All About PapayaStaying Hydrated this SummerWhy Seniors Are at Risk
There are a few reasons why older adults are more susceptible to fluid and electrolyte imbalances. With age, our body’s ability to conserve water is reduced. This can make it more difficult to adapt to things like fluctuating temperatures. Additionally, the sense of thirst diminishes with age. By the time someone actually feels thirsty, essential fluids could already be extremely low.
Certain medical conditions and medications can affect a senior’s ability to retain fluids. Individuals with dementia may forget to eat and drink, and in more advanced stages may have difficulty swallowing. Drugs like diuretics, antihistamines, laxatives, anti-psychotics and corticosteroids can cause frequent urination that depletes water and electrolytes. Furthermore, seniors who experience incontinence often purposely refuse or limit fluids in order to avoid accidents.
Signs and Symptoms of DehydrationAs a family caregiver, it’s important to be mindful of the
signs and symptoms and to communicate with a doctor or health professional if you notice red flags that could indicate complications from fluid loss.
Picking up on the more subtle, early signs that a senior needs to up their fluid intake is crucial. Keep in mind that thirst is not usually a helpful indicator, because a person who feels thirsty may already be dehydrated. Initial signs to look for include headache, constipation, muscle cramps, dry mouth and tongue, and sleepiness or lethargy. Urine color is another helpful indicator and should be clear or light yellow for someone who is properly hydrated.
If severe dehydration goes unchecked, it can cause seizures due to electrolyte imbalance, a reduction in the volume of blood in the body (hypovolemic shock), kidney failure, heat injuries, and even coma or death.
Signs of Severe DehydrationLittle or no urinationDark or amber-colored urineDry skin that stays folded when pinchedIrritability, dizziness or confusionLow blood pressureRapid breathing and heartbeatWeak pulseCold hands and feet
Preventing DehydrationFor most of us, drinking plenty of fluids and eating
foods with high water content is a great way to keep our bodies properly hydrated in warmer weather. Most adults need about 64 ounces of fluid every day, but that amount increases with heat and humidity and can change based on various medications and health conditions.
Pay attention to your muscles.Lean muscle tissue contains more than 75 percent
water, so when the body is short on H2O, muscles are more easily fatigued. ‘Staying hydrated helps prevent the decline in performance (strength, power, aerobic capacity, anaerobic capacity) during exercise,’Casa says. When your muscles feel too tired to finish a workout, try drinking some water and resting for a bit before getting back at it.
Keep dry mouth at bayOne of the first signs of dehydration is dry mouth. If
your mouth starts feeling like the Sahara, head to the water fountain (or take a sip from your reusable water bottle!). A short water break between sets or during quick breaks from cardio can help stave off exercise-induced dehydration.
For many, the long-awaited summer months bring to mind family picnics, cool drinks on the porch and lazy afternoons at the beach. But, as temperatures soar, warm weather activities can increase the risk for another staple of summer: dehydration. Not getting enough fluids, especially when it is hot outside, can pose serious health problems for anyone, but older adults are at particular risk for dehydration.
