Every week we will interview two CESL students. If you are willing to be interviewed, talk to the student workers in the Student Learning Center.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT!

Name: Abdalmohsen Alqahtani Hometown: Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia

Level: 40

Hi Abdalmohsen, what is your major, and what do you want to do with it?Chemical engineering and I want to go to school at the U of A. I want to work in my city - Al Jubail in the east of Saudi Arabia.

Is this your first time here? This is my first session here but I studied English in Flagstaff one year ago. I decided to move here and study because my major is not offered at NAU.

What do you think of Tucson compared to Flagstaff, and why is Tucson better?Tucson is bigger than Flagstaff but hotter. The weather in Flagstaff was beautiful in the summer.

What are some of your hobbies?Riding horses. I would jump the fence but I stopped recently. I rode for 10 years. I also like soccer and swimming.

What will you do for spring break? My brother will come to CESL this month so maybe travel with him and some friends. Maybe in California, I want to see all of it. I have never been to the beach in the USA, but my city is on the coast.

Tell me about Al Jubail. It is a little bigger than Flagstaff, and has a very beautiful beach. It also has lots of companies: oil, chemical and others.

What surprised you moving from Saudi Arabia to America?I thought Americans would cook food, but this is not the case. I heard stereotypes about the people and thought people would hate me, but it is the opposite; they are very friendly and funny.

Have you done any traveling?I lived and studied in Auckland, New Zealand for three months and have been to London, UK.  New Zealand was my favorite place. Before I came to America I was thinking maybe to study there but it might be too hard because of their accent.

Alright, what will you do this weekend?Probably buy furniture and a new TV. Right now I have nothing, I sleep on an air mattress and have not slept on a bed in America.  My air mattress has a small leak so the air is always leaking out and I must pump it up every night.

Yes, sounds like you need to do some shopping! Okay last question: what is one word to describe yourself?Handsome.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT! Name: Tasuku Ishiko Hometown: Tokyo, Japan

Age: 21 Level: 60

How long have you been at CESL? 9 months.

Will you attend the university after CESL? No, I will return to Japan to complete my studies at Hosei University. I am taking one year leave of absence from the university in order to improve my English and then I will return to Japan.

So are you doing a study abroad program through your university?

No, I took the leave of absence and found a study abroad program independent of the University.

What do you study at the university? I study sociology. I would like to work at the airport because I really like planes.

Do you build airplane models in your free time? No, I built airplane models as a child, but now I enjoy going to the gym, hanging out with my friends, and playing lacrosse. I play on the lacrosse team at Hosei University.

I have never been to Japan, is there something that is different from the U.S. or interesting that I should try? Jing was telling me that I should try something called Basashi sushi. Basashi is horse sushi. It is not very common, but you can find it at a very nice restaurant or make it at home. It is very good.

That sounds very interesting; I will have to try that sometime. Have you found good sushi in Tucson? I have only been to Sushi Garden and Yoshimutsu. Sushi Garden was okay, but Yoshimutsu was good. Yoshimutus has very good tempura.

What do you think is something that is very different between Japan and the U.S.? The fashion is different. Japanese people care more about the quality of their clothes and how they are dressed than Americans.

Are the stores more expensive in Japan? No,no I would say that they are about the same in price.

Have you travelled anywhere else besides the U.S.? I was born in Belgium, but moved to Japan when I was three years old. Besides that, I have been to France and a few cities in the U.S.

Where else have you visited in the U.S.? I have been to New York, San Francisco, Boston, and Georgia because my dad works for a Japanese company there.

Which of those places was your favorite? I really liked San Francisco. It was a big city but not as busy as New York.

If someone in CESL were to want to get to know you better, what is something that they should know? I am very shy. When I get to know someone, I am very quiet but I become more comfortable with time. When I first came to America, I was very scared because I didn’t know any English and didn’t have any Japanese friends. Having Japanese friends has made it easier, but it is not very good for my English.
