Plastics become electrically charged because they are poor conductors. once static electricity has accumulated on a plastic surface, it remains and can’t be reversed. CESA®-stat permanent prevent the development of static electricity by increasing the conductivity of the material so electric charges remain mobile and can dissipate to an earth connection within a relatively short period of time.

Traditional antistats, such as those used in plastic packaging, are water-attracting surfactants added to and dispersed in the plastic material. Additives of this kind are not integrated in the material and can migrate to the surface where they form a molecular hy-groscopic film that absorbs air humidity. This humidity will lower the electric surface resis-tivity temporarily and will allow static electricity to discharge. However, migrating antistats have inherent shortcomings: they are water-soluble, washable and volatile upon air contact, which causes them eventually to lose their effectiveness and contribute to VOC emissions. Moreover, their performance depends on air humidity. If the air is too dry, such as on a cold winter day, migrating antistats do not work well.

This is not an ideal scenario for car owners who want to keep their cars looking good even after they have been on the road for a few years. Clariant CESA®-stat permanent masterbatches are the solution to provide a sustainable antistatic effect to molded parts. They are high-molecular-weight additives and as such are conductive along their full molecular chains. They bind themselves to the plastic in a three dimensional network so they do not contribute to VOC emissions. The antistatic effect, therefore, no longer depends on the humidity of the air and is integrated permanently in the plastic. Molded parts such as sunglass storage compartment or overhead consoles will look spotless giving the car interior a lasting high-quality look.
