CES 2018 –Evolutionary vs. Revolutionary

Technology Trend: Making it Accessible, Practical and Friendly
• In 2017, scientists inserted a GIF of a horse into living bacteria. It’s either the most hipster or weirdest tech thing ever (maybe both?!). But no matter what, it highlights just how far and fast tech is movinginto consumers' lives, including potentially their DNA. But while the tech may be limitless, consumer expectations are far more grounded. Wearables, the connected home, autonomous cars and VR are all categories still trying to find their place in the lives of consumers, who are seeing technology as utilitarian and practical, not futuristic and aspirational.

Key Consumer/Market Trends Driving Innovation in Technology
1. #Assisted Development: In a world that’s more complex to navigate, consumers today are looking to brands to teach them life skills, let them outsource daily tasks, or help them realize personal life goals. Example: Buzzfeed & GE partnership in Tasty One Top smart cooking appliance, virtual companions that teach, entertain, heal and befriend.
2. #Adaptable by Design: Consumers don’t have to experience the most innovative forms of digital adaptation to have their expectations reconfigured. They just have to know about them. The Apple HomePod reconfigures its sound depending on where it’s placed in a room. Why doesn’t my new car adapt around the changing weather?” Tesla automagically extended the battery life of cars in Florida to help drivers evacuate in the wake of Hurricane Irma. Brands need to design offerings that adapt to changing needs – 78% of consumers say they retract loyalty faster today than they did 3 years ago. (Accenture, Feb. 2017).
3. #Health Yourself: Self–care and preventative health are becoming essential across demographics. An uncertain world is driving people to seek holistic ways to boost their mood and stay healthy, in some cases changing the way we interact with medical professionals. Tech trends - digital health, sensory deprivation a.k.a. restricted environmental stimulation therapy (REST)
4. #Connected Entertainment: Consumers, especially younger Millennials and Gen We will expect a social or sharing component in the world of gaming and entertainment. More and more, entertainment will be expected to connect people in a virtual world, inspire creativity and self-expression, and provide escape.
5. #Instant Access: Brands that allow more reliable, consistent speed in accessing information and entertainment, e.g. 5G technology will allow more connectivity to devices in the home, less lag time in network response, and greater reliability and consistency in speed of delivery.

Digital Transformation/Top Tech Stories for 2018
Retail, healthcare, and industrial/supply chain industries will likely see the greatest growth in IoT. Forrester Research has predicted the IoT will become “the backbone” of customer value as it continues to grow. Retail is hoping to harness the power of the IoT to connect with customers, grow their brands, and improve the customer journey in deeply personal ways.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) goes mainstream – will be more pervasive and integrated to enrich human interaction vs. to avoid it.
An umbrella term for augmented reality, virtual reality, mixed reality, 360°, and immersive technologies.
delivering more feature-rich, intelligent, and personalized services and capabilities.
self-driving vehicles, expected to launch its first commercial ride-hailing service in early 2018 in a suburb of Phoenix.
Blockchain is the underlying innovation behind cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. Allows multiple stakeholders to confidently and securely share access to the same information.

Home Security
- Economic Times Technology
Expect to see an increase in home security cameras (with more advanced face scanning technology) supporting “person alerts” that can tell you who they see, and send you a notification about it.

Life in Sync: Voices and Visuals – AI that makes life seamless and smarter
As the line between online and offline blurs, smart systems are delivering seamless convenience with voice control and image recognition at the helm. Look for brands that seamlessly help the “physical” and the “digital” worlds become one streamlined benefit to consumers, e.g., Apple ios11 making AR available to the masses through seamless integration.
| 11
International Data Corp. (IDC) projects that total spending on AR/VR products and services will soar from $9.1 billion in 2017 to nearly $160 billion in 2021, representing a compound annual growth rate of 113.2 percent.
• Consumer applications: Explore and Play, e.g.o Estée Lauder has launched an AR virtual makeup mirror on its web and mobile sites that adjusts for light, skin texture,
and shine so that users can virtually try on product shades using their photo or live video. o IKEA will soon launch an AR app that lets you see how furniture will look in your home via 3D renderings of up to 600
furniture pieces.o Pinterest Lens, is a “visual discovery tool” that consumers can use to turn their real-world surroundings into a boundless
search engine. Consumers simply point Lens at an object and tap the “Instant Ideas” button to discover related content. Pointing it at an ingredient suggests relevant recipes.
• Business applications: Connect, Learn, Know, e.g. VR technology as a merchandising aid, mocking up shelves with complementary products to assist multiple product-line owners in collaborative marketing efforts, as well as to present suggested display ideas to retailers.
Digital Reality – Shifting focus from Reality to Opportunity – to help Educate, Create, Operate, Sell.
Companies/Brands to watch in this space: Magic Leap, a startup that uses digital light field signals, sleek lightweight goggles, and a palm-size processor worn at the waist. Also, Google (ARCore), Oculus for Business, Unity and Unreal gaming engines, Cisco Spark Board,

AI Gets Smarter Voice
With 5G technology enabling faster data transfers and the ever-improving AI space, the CTA are predicting common voice assistants to get ever closer to passing the Turing test and passing for legitimate human beings through contextual conversations, self-aware assistance and the expansion of robotics in this area.Intel have already kicked things off with the introduction of their Nervana chipset, focused on artificial intelligence computation. Work is already being done in this area (I met Olly, one such example last year), but it's still very much in its infancy.
Retail $549
Olly understands your facial expressions, vocal intonations, and verbal patterns. So whether you are happy or sad, Olly sees it and hears it. This understanding allows Olly to move and talk to you in an unprecedented way.
Olly interacts with people in a more natural way similar to how a person might. Olly does not only hear, but it can also see. Olly will proactively start a conversation rather than just reacting to a command.

Evolving Wearables Market
• Bridging the gap between technology and fashion -Hybrid Smartwatches – Fossil, Asus, Skagen, Michael Kors, Emporio, Diesel.
• From fitness to health monitors – detecting hypertension, sleep apnea, heart conditions and even alert us when we’re getting sick.
• Greater integration with voice assistants to make it more functional for everyday use.
Health monitoring could soon become a major aspect of wearables. The Apple Watch already has a heart rate sensor, which the company wants to use to check for heart rhythm abnormalities (atrial fibrillation) too. It's also launched an AFibheart rate study with Stanford University that anyone can opt into and test. Now, there's a new strap from AliveCor for the Apple Watch that gives on-the-spot EKG readings.
What’s Next:Voice assistants will likely show up in more devices next year, too. Hanich expects Samsung will soon offer devices with Bixby, and Alexa could find her way into more gadgets. Llamas thinks wearables will tie into the internet of things. That means, for example, your watch could start your car's engine when you're 200 yards away, turn on the heater at 150 yards and switch on your favorite music service at 20 yards
