CES 2017 Executive Summary

This year has been the 50th CES anniversary and the organizers reported over 175,000 professional attendees. According to CTA official visitor figures will be announced in spring time.

As in 2016 the big topics were IoT (Internet of Things) devices represented by home automation and fitness products and automotive developments such as autonomous driving and in-car audiovisual technology. Many IoT start-up companies were exhibiting

All major flat screen manufacturers showed their Ultra HD flat screens with HDR (high dynamic range) capability – the technology fight is ongoing between LED (Samsung calls it now QLED as in Quantum Dot with with blue OLED backlight) and OLED (Organic LED)

LG positioned new Nano Cell display technology superior to Quantum Dot in the LCD category and furthermore positions its OLED technology as superior to all

Sony introduced a new range of OLED flat screens where the panel apparently is supplied by LG

The new HDMI 2.1 specification was announced supporting video resolutions up to 10k @ 120fps and dynamic HDR signalling

Several manufacturers showcased 65” 8K flat screens (apparently for the Japanese market). Chinese manufacturer HAIER announced a range of flat screens with a Google Chromecast client integrated and Westinghouse announced an Amazon Fire TV UHD flat screen

Hobby and professional drones were exhibited by over 40 manufacturers indicating the anticipated growth in that segment. There were considerably fewer exhibitors of 3D printers and smart watches present compared to previous years

The big marketing battle: OLED versus back-lit LCD technology Or LG versus Samsung = OLED versus QLED (quantum dot LED)

OLED is the premium technology = perfect color on perfect black LCD is inferior but the new Nano Cell displays are much better than the

Quantum Dot displays (as manufactured by Samsung)

LG showed four HDR technologies on their stand: 1. Dolby Vision 2. HDR 10 3. Hybrid Log Gamma (= DirecTV and ATSC 3.0) 4. Technicolor/Philips

After Panasonic also Sony joined the OLED camp 4K Laser Projector by Hisense Samsung: QLED positioning as “director’s intend”

Just amazing: Sony’s new A1E OLED series has an Acoustic Surface Technology which vibrates the display itself and allows "sound to be output directly from the TV screen“

CES 2017 Ultra HD Flat Screens – content integration

The big manufacturers continue to integrate content platforms into their products Third party platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime But also their own platforms such as Samsung’s TV Plus (see below)

Chinese manufacturer HAIER integrated Google’s Chromecast client (top left picture)

Launched in October 2015 in Korea, TV Plus is Samsung’s “virtual channel” video service that is slowly making its way around the world. It now expanded to Thailand and Vietnam before eventually being supported in the U.S. The company has been gradually adding new content providers to the video-on-demand offering. The latest one is Fandango, which will offer to subscribers more than 40,000 movies and shows to rent or own. In Korea it is featuring 33 channels and a wide range of content, including dramas, music and education. One-fifth of Samsung Smart TV users have watched TV PLUS, and their rate of revisiting the service exceeds 80 percent

CES 2017 8K flat screens are just around the corner

Virtually every flat screen manufacturers showed an 8K prototype

No price announcements yet

Stunning picture resolution but mainly static pictures were demonstrated

Still some years required for technology to mature (in terms of 8K picture processing, motion compensation etc.)

The 8K flat screens of the Chinese manufacturers were the ones most visible on the stands

Large and impressive stands Excellent technology show cases including Smart Home and 8K But: still far away from the mechanical finish and quality of Sony, Samsung, LG, Panasonic

Chinese manufacturers drive 4K TV prices down: TCL’s S-series Ultra HD screens in the US will start at USD 369 for a 43” model All new TCL screens use the new Roku 7.5 OS (streaming client) TCL also integrated HDR 10 and Dolby Vision
