  • Name: Certified Seismic Installation Program (CSIP)

    Status: Woodwork Institute’s (WI) Certified Seismic Installation Program is meant to be either a stand-alone quality control option that can be specified separately or in conjunction with our Certified Compliance or Monitored Compliance programs.

    Benefits To: Design Professionals and Property Owners:

    • SpecifieduseofWI’sseismiccaseworkpre-approvalsfromtheOfficeofStatewideHealth PlanningandDevelopment(OSHPD),withoutanyadditionalengineeringcostsand/or requirements.

    • Assurancethatproperbackingwasinstalledinthewallsforcompliantcaseworkinstallation.

    • AssurancethatcaseworkwasinstalledinaccordancewithWI’sseismiccaseworkpre-approvals withinOSHPD’scompliancerequirements.

    • Certifiedacknowledgementthattheproject’sseismiccaseworkinstallationrequirements have been met.

    Applicability: OSHPD WI OSHPD’s pre-approvals are adequate for casework installation within the State of California

    at any height within the building where the SDS is not greater than 1.93 for base, peninsula, and mechanical chase cabinets, and 2.0 fir wall and tall storage cabinets, and includes:

    • Concreteorconcretemasonryunit(CMU)wallconstruction

    • Woodormetalstudwallconstructionwitheithercontinuous3x6or16GAinwallblocking respectivelyandoneortwolayersofsheetrock

    • Caseworkconstructionofplywood,particleboard,MDForSolidPhenolicCore(SPC)in compliance with the minimum requirements of the Architectural Woodwork Standards (AWS),including:

    • Basecabinets,upto36″tallx24″bodydepthx48″wide,includingpeninsulaandthose with mechanical chase

    • Wallcabinetsupto48″tallx18″bodydepthx48″wide

    • Tallstoragecabinetsupto96″tallx24″bodydepthx48″wide

    • Peninsulabasecabinetsupto36″tallx36″bodydepthx48″wide

    • Mechanicalchasebasecabinetsupto42″tallx36″bodydepthand48″wide

    Specification Requirement: Should a design professional wish to take advantage of the Woodwork Institute’s Certified Seismic Installation Program (CSIP),projectspecificationsshallrequireconformancetothe North American Architectural Woodwork Standards(NAAWS)andcontainthefollowing wording:

    • CertifiedSeismicInstallationProgram:

    • Beforewallsareclosedup,provideawrittenWoodworkInstituteCertifiedSeismic InstallationProgramreportconfirmingthatbackingisprovidedinalllocationsrequired forcaseworkinstallationoridentifyingthoselocationswherebackingismissingor improperly located.

    • OncompletionofinstallationprovideaWoodworkInstituteCertifiedSeismic InstallationProgramCertificate,identifyingtheworkcoveredandcertifyingthat installationmeetstherequirementsoftheWICSIPattachmentdetailsandschedules.

    • AllfeeschargedbytheWoodworkInstitutefortheirCertifiedSeismicInstallation Programaretheresponsibilityofthemillworkinstallerandshallbeincludedintheirbid.

    Casework Installer Requirements: The party responsible for installation of casework for any project requiring CSIP certification shall:

    • ContacttheWoodworkInstituteandcoordinateCSIPcertificationwiththempriorto submittal of shop drawings.

    • Ensurethatthecaseworkshopdrawings:

    ○ AreincompliancewiththeNAAWS’sminimumrequirementsasestablishedin Section1

    ○ Include,inaccordancewiththeminimumrequirementsWI’sOSHPDPre-approvals:

    • Caseworkelevationsshowingthecenter-lineheightandhorizontallocationsofall required,continuous,internalwallblockingfurnishedbyothers,

    • Acaseworkfastenerschedule,clearlyshowingthetype,size,locationand maximumspacing.

  • • Atwoodormetalstudwalls,priortoapplicationofwallsurfacing,CaseworkInstallershall examine,approveandacknowledgeblockingcompliancetoWI’sOSHPDPre-approval requirements,whileprovidingdocumentationofsuchthrough:

    ○ Aninspectionreportshowingrooms/wallsinspectedtypeofblocking(woodormetal), confirmationofcomplianceorstatementofnon-compliance,inspectorsname,dateand signaturewith:

    • Photodocumentation(referencedbyroom/wall)ofatleast25%ofthewalls inspected,andinspectionreportshallidentifywhichwallsincludephoto documentation. • ContactWIandarrangeforfinalinspectionofthecaseworkinstallationbyaWIDirectorof ArchitecturalServices(DAS),and:

    ○ Ifinstallationisfoundcompliant,theDASwillauthorizeissuanceoftheCSIPCertificate.

    Although it is not required, WI recommends, that those fabricators with the appropriate equipment pre-bore their cabinet backs with the proper number, spacing and location of the installationfastenerlocationsinaccordancewithWI’sOSHPDPre-approvalstoavoidfielderror.

    WI Affiliate Requirements: In order to qualify for the WI Affiliate fee discount for CSIP certification, WI Affiliate shall hold a WI

    SB-E Type License,whichwillbeofferedtoexistingWIAffiliatefirmswithoutaWI-TypeB-E LicenseandnewWIAffiliateapplicantsundernormalapplicationprotocols.

    CSIPisnotapplicabletotheInstitute’sWIAffiliateSub-Subdiscount.

    Drawings: The current OPM approval does not include base and peninsula cabinets. However, WI’s CSIP has additional specifications with regard to base and peninsula cabinets.

    For CSIP, use the approved OPM for wall and tall storage cabinets and the previously approved OPA requirements for base and peninsula cabinets. The applicable drawings and their sources are noted below and included in this document.
