My Dear South Atlantic Region Sorors,

Memories of serving as your Regional Director have filled my mind over the past four months. These memories I shall cherish for the rest of my life. Memories of:

• getting to know the sorors of the Region better — up close and personal;

• bringing many new members into the sisterhood, chartering two chapters, and reactivating the largest number of sorors;

• speaking engagements for chapters’ functions and Founders’ Day observances;

• having record-setting numbers and outstanding Undergraduate Roundups, Cluster Meetings, and Regional Conferences;

• being faced with challenges and obstacles;

• mourning Ivies Beyond the Wall, especially those who were so special to me;

• winning Program, EAF, and other recognitions at Boules, especially this year for the Youth Business Plan;

• having eight excellent and sisterly Cluster Coordinators; a skilled Administrative Assistant; faithful Personal Assistants; the best Webmaster and On-Line Technology Assistant; a devoted and accurate Regional Tamiouchos; committed Regional Committee Members; expressive Spiritual Advisors; hard working State Connection Coordinators; knowledgeable and productive International Committees Members, and a money raising EAF Representative; a creative Boule Luncheon chairman and imaginative committee members; and effective and devoted Chapter Basilei, Graduate Advisors, and sorors in the Region;

• helping and encouraging former South Atlantic Regional Directors and two former Supreme Basilei from the Region; and

• receiving thank you notes and cards, gifts, and well wishes from chapters and sorors.

All that I can say is “thank you” for the memories and “thank you” for your love, support, and tangible gifts. I love each of you.

Sisterly,

Soror Ella

Ella Springs Jones 16th South Atlantic Regional Director

GLOBAL LEADERSHIP THROUGH TIMELESS SERVICE PROGRAMS TO

ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY

Join in this second century of service as we continue our legacy of Service to all man-kind. Our legacy of commitment to global service and leadership is the inspiration and impetus for our 2010-2014 program and theme - Global Leadership through Time-less Service.

The challenge before us is important so be-gin your program transitions now. How? Chapters must evaluate current programs and map them to our 2010-2014 Program Initiatives. We’ve traditionally focused on Education, Health, The Family, Economics, and the Arts. So ask yourself, “What are we doing now that works for our community and what is supported by the membership?” In addition, ask “What strategies can be used to maintain current partnerships and collabora-tions?”

Our guiding principles and imperatives were developed with our traditional areas of ser-vice in mind combined with the relevant is-sues in our modern society – they are deeply rooted in SERVICE: S for Sisterhood, E for Economic Security, R for Human Rights, V for Vitality and Health, I for Innovative Pro-grams, C for Collaborative Partnerships, and E for Environmental Security.

We also have to work SMART! Each pro-gram initiative is Strategic, Measureable, Attainable, Relevant and Transferable for the most impact. Sorors, take leadership in your chapters using Awareness, Advocacy, and Action as the building blocks of your 2010 — 2014 Program Initiatives.

Awareness means education. We must edu-cate ourselves and our communities as to why these initiatives are important and the cold hard facts that support them. For exam-ple, 1 in every 9 African Americans has dia-

betes, but only 1 in 4 is aware that they are living with this danger-ous condition. But awareness isn’t enough, we must Advocate. We’ve partnered with key international and national agencies to collaborate and share resources. Regions and chapters are en-couraged to take advantage of these partnerships and ones that you’ve already established. View videos of our sorority’s partner-ships at http://www.aka1908.com/about-aka/partnerships.html. And finally, Sorors, we must Act. Our chapters and program initia-tives can host fairs, forums, and screenings at AKA events along with other innovative approaches.

This great mission: Global Leadership through Timeless Service and its six initiatives start with the signature program of this admini-stration, the Emerging Young Leader Program.

Initiative I - Emerging Young Leader Program, The Signature Pro-gram Initiative, is designed to significantly impact the lives of young girls in 6th through 8th grades in the areas of leadership develop-ment, civic engagement, educational enrichment and character building. Sorors, you can partner with a local school or boys and girls club to select your participants. We will impact the lives of thousands of girls as they develop into leaders of their communi-ties, our country, and the world.

Initiative II - Health Initiatives are designed to promote personal fitness and healthy lifestyles while focusing on two signature pro-grams and partnerships: Asthma Prevention and Management and Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability. Partnerships in-clude the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart/Stroke Association, the American Kidney Fund, the American Can-cer Society, and Health Promotion the undergraduate emphasis program. Environmental Stewardship encompasses eco-living, en-vironmental education, advocacy and stewardship. Chapters will disseminate information to encourage and sponsor youth to apply for the President's Environmental Youth Awards, http://www.epa.gov/enviroed/peya/index.html.

Initiative III - Global Poverty is intended to fight to end hunger and malnutrition, preserve the environment, and empower women. Key program partnerships are where the greatest number of children are suffering from PEM (protein-energy malnutrition). We will part-ner with HEIFER, http://www.heifer.org/#, an international organiza-tion whose mission is to provide food and training in self-reliance through gifts of livestock and training in environmentally sound agri-culture. We will also co-sponsor a project in Africa and South America to create opportunities for women self-sufficiency. Women will be equal partners in ending hunger and poverty.

Initiative IV- Economic Security Initiative is

designed to continue Alpha Kappa Alpha’s

efforts to build wealth, allocate resources,

promote homeownership, asset protection,

estate planning, access to capital, support

and empower female-owned businesses

and urban enterprise zones.

Initiative V - Social Justice and Human

Rights initiative is designed to advocate for

social justice and human rights for all.

Through awareness campaigns, support of

legislation, and global campaigns, we will

be advocates for changes in laws that ad-

dress Domestic Violence Prevention and

the protection of victims of Human Traffick-

ing. We will seek for the protection of

rights for Children of Incarcerated Parents

and Youth Aging Out of Foster Care.

Through our advocacy in these areas, we

must educate voters and constituents and

empower them to make the positive

changes needed.

Initiative VI - Internal Leadership Training

for External Service is designed to provide

leadership training for members at all levels

within the sorority as well as professional

leadership skills for leadership in other or-

ganizations. For example, we will now cer-

tify our Financial Officers like we’ve certi-

fied our Graduate Advisors.

We’ve Got Work to do Sorors! Join in this

second century of service as we enrich our-

selves and enrich the lives that we touch

through our commitment to service while

continuing our wonderful legacy. Your In-

ternational Program Committee stands

ready to partner with you.

Setting High Standards

In his book, The 22 Non-Negotiable Laws of Wellness, author Greg Anderson wrote, "Let us be about setting high standards for life, love, creativity, and wisdom. If our expecta-tions in these areas are low, we are not likely to experience wellness. Setting high stan-dards makes every day and every decade

worth look ing forward to."

He also reminded us that, "When we change our perception, we gain control. The stress becomes a challenge, not a threat. When we commit to action, to actually doing some-thing rather than feeling trapped by events,

the stress in our life becomes manageable."

Supreme Tamiouchos Tidbits Soror Delores Y. McKinley

Most chapters should have already started planning the budget for 2011. I have included a few reminders that might facilitate that process:

1. The Budget or Finance Committee should meet no later than September to prepare the budget. The Tamiouchos normally serves as the committee chairman. The Tami-ouchos should have already obtained input from the various committees.

2. The Pecunious Grammateus and the Program Committee Chairman should also serve on the committee. It is neces-sary that the chapter determines its program activities for the year in order to establish the cost of implementing the pro-grams.

3. Timetable for Budget a. In October, the budget should be presented to the Chap-ter. b. In November, the Chapter should approve the 2011 budget.

4. Use your 2010 budget as a guide in preparing the 2011 budget.

5. On the income side, add $5 each for the Constitution and Bylaws and Manual of Standard Procedures, $10 total. These are mandatory documents for all Sorors.

6. Remember to add EAF dues for each member of $10.

Expenses 7. Remember the International Founders’ Day in Little Rock, Arkansas in January 2011. Please plan to have representa-tion, if your budget so allows.

8. 2011 is a Leadership Seminar year. This year it will be in Atlanta. Please budget for your Basileus to attend.

9. Include a contingency line item for emergencies that may arise.

10. Chapters must use funds raised through the community exclusively for scholarships and/or community service pro-jects. It is required that these funds be budgeted separately and maintained in a separate bank account.

Other Financial items 11. Chapter Tax and per capita are due by January 1st. Per

Capita is considered late if not postmarked by February 1, 2011. Do not wait until the last week in December to process electronic payments of per capita, as we experience heavy processing during this time.

12. Pay close attention to items in the Fall mailing and the Chapter Report Booklet. Please remit your annual Budget and Statement of Operations Report by February 1, 2011 to the Corporate Office, Regional Director and Supreme Tamiouchos. This is required to facilitate the preparation of the IRS form 990 Group Tax Return for Chapters.

THERE IS A FORM 990 QUESTIONNAIRE THAT MUST ALSO BE COMPLETED. Chapters that do not submit reports on time will be responsible for filing their own tax returns to the IRS and will be left off the corporate return. Further, if these chapters do not respond to the final request for information, they will be subject to disciplinary actions from the Regional Director.

13. To facilitate transferring of fiscal responsibilities, the Tamiouchos should be prepared to have the signatures changed on the bank accounts and the fidelity bond in December. Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Bylaws require each chapter to (fidelity) bond its Tamiouchos and Pecunious Grammateus. We also recommended any other soror handling funds also be bonded. Greetings from your Second Supreme Anti- Basileus! Soror Jocelyn McDaniel

Undergraduates, it is our time to lead the way. We will lead the way by providing local service with a global per-spective. As we move forward in this second century of service, may we commit ourselves to protecting the legacy of our dear Founders by putting on the armor of the whole Alpha Kappa Alpha woman. Dress yourselves with leadership, service, and scholarship. Don’t leave home without this armor. This AKA armor will protect our status as America’s premiere black Greek-lettered organization. We must also protect our legacy by adhering to our keystone documents and obeying the mandates sent down by our International leadership. In the spirit of sisterhood, we will unite as one to accomplish our Global mission of service to all mankind.

Undergraduates, I welcome you on this journey of Global Leadership through Timeless Service.

Kudos for the 2010 Undergraduate Round Up

Soror Marsha,

Just wanted to send you a note to let you

know how much I enjoyed the Undergrad

Roundup in Savannah. The sessions were

very informative and the information

very timely.

Soror Jasmine and Soror Ella’s presenta-

tions were “on point” and I left with no

doubt of how the different situations

should be handled or conducted.

The location was excellent and the spirit

of sisterhood could be felt in the air.

Congratulations on a truly successful re-

treat and much continued success

throughout your administration.
