About the Labor Education Program:

The only state-wide labor education program, LEP was formally established in early 1947 in response to the

educational demands of workers belonging to newly-formed unions. Over time, the program’s mission of

worker outreach, education and participatory-action research has expanded to serve low-wage and other

marginalized workers in addition to union members. With offices in Urbana and Chicago, LEP provides

educational programs for over 2,000 union members and other workers each year. Most classes are held in

the evening or on weekends in various locations throughout Illinois – including union halls, workplaces,

community organizations, worker centers and schools.

A Brief Overview of the

Certificate in Labor & Employment Law:

Beginning in the Fall of 2019, the Labor Education

Program within the School of Labor & Employment

Relations at the University of Illinois will begin offering

an exciting new Certificate in Labor & Employment

Law for open-enrollment students. All classes will be

taught by Stephanie Brinson, Lecturer, J.D., who was

a practicing Chicago union-side labor attorney for

13 years before joining the U of I faculty. Students

may enroll in any one course or take all six 7-hour

courses (42 total hours) to complete the Law

Certificate. Note that students completing the Labor

Education Program Certificate may take any one of

the Law Certificate classes as an elective satisfying

the legal class element of that certificate program.

LABOR LAW SURVEY (TWO 7-HOUR COURSES)

Course Abstract: The Labor Law Survey consists of two 7-hour courses that can

be taken as a combined survey or individual stand-alone courses. Courses are

designed to provide students with both a solid introduction and also deeper

critical analysis of essential Constitutional rights, statutes, regulations, and case

law related to the National Labor Relations Act (private sector) and the Illinois

Public Labor Relations Act (public sector). *Topics and issues covered are subject to change at the discretion of the instructor

INTENSIVE LABOR & EMPLOYMENT LEGAL WRITING

WORKSHOP

(TWO 7-HOUR COURSES)

Course Abstract: The two intensive labor & employment legal writing workshops

are designed to be taken together, but where necessary, could be divided into

stand-alone workshops where warranted. Course is designed to be an

advanced writing workshop for those interested in developing successful written

advocacy when representing union members before various legal tribunals

including arbitrators and labor boards. All workshops will be conducted

collaboratively in a group with the instructor and other students and will include

individual reading, research, and writing assignments. *Topics and issues covered are subject to change at the discretion of the instructor
