    Certifcate and Class ChartThe ollowing chart provides inormation about the types o certifcates and the classes to whichsuch applicants may be admitted. In all cases the SAT I (mathematical reasoning, verbal reasoning,and writ ing) must be taken by the deadline, and the English Language Profciency Requirement must

    be met.

    The abbreviations used in the chart are as ollows:1

    Agri = Agricultural and Food Sciences GD = Graphic Design

    Arch = Architecture HS = Health Sciences

    Biol = Biology Math = Mathematics

    Chem = Chemistry Nurs = Nursing

    CmpS = Computer Science PtSt = PetroleumStudies

    Engg = Engineering Phys = Physics

    Eng = English SB = School o Business

    FAS = Faculty o Arts and Sciences Soph = Sophomore

    Fr = Freshman Stat = Statistic

    Geol = Geology

    Certifcate Class and department towhich the certifcate permits admittance

    High School Diploma or Secondary School LeavingCertifcate, based on at least twelve years oschooling starting with Elementary I Class

    Students with high grades on certain advancedplacement (AP) examinations o the College Board

    may apply or reshman course credit in thosesubjects (see p.38)

    Freshman or Nursing I

    Government Secondary Certifcates (literary or

    scientifc), including the German Abitur and theDiplome dEtudes Collegiales (DEC) based on twoyears o the CEGEP Program

    Freshman or Nursing I

    Students who successully complete the reshman class are promoted to the sophomore class in theFaculty o Arts and Sciences, or may seek admission to the equivalent classes in other aculties.

    These equivalent classes are the frst year in the Faculty o Agricultural and Food Sciences, the frstyear in the Suliman S. Olayan School o Business, the frst year in the Faculty o Engineering and

    Architecture, the frst year in the Faculty o Health Sciences, and the second year in the Rafc HaririSchool o Nursing. Students admitted to the reshman class are urged to consult with their advisersto amiliarize themselves with the requirements or admission to the majors oered by the various

    aculties o the University.

    Government Secondary Certifcates also qualiy the student or admission to the sophomore classin the Faculty o Arts and Sciences, and to equivalent classes in the other aculties, as ollows:

    General Certifcate o Education (GCE) and Oxord or CambridgeHigher Certifcate

    Atotalofvedierent subjects are required, at least two o which are at advanced level (4

    Advanced Subsidiary level subjects may replace the 2 required A levels depending on the program

    applied or).

    ArabicatadvancedlevelisnotcountedasoneofthetworequiredsubjectsatAdvancedLevel.It

    is also advised to take an extra subject i one o the subjects is a language.

    TheGCEadvancedsupplementarysubjectsmayberecognizedforthepurposeofadmissionupon

    the approval o the department concerned. This department may require extra remedial courses toreplace lacking subjects.

    AGCEcerticatebasedonlyonO-levelsubjectsdoesnotpermitadmittancetotheUniversityat

    any level.

    HoldersoftheGCEcerticatewithsubjectsasspeciedabovemayapplyforadmissiontothe

    reshman class. I they choose to do so, they may be given reshman credits or courses equivalent

    to A-level subjects in which they received high scores.

    HoldersoftheGCEcerticateasspeciedabovemayapplyforadmissiontothesophomoreclassin

    FAS, and to the equivalent classes in other aculties in the manner indicated below:

    3 Students who hold the Lebanese or French Baccalaureate (literature and humanities or sociology and economics) or a government secondaryschool certifcate, or a certifcate or diploma considered by the University to be equivalent to the Lebanese Baccalaureate, may seek admissionto any o the our engineering majors or to architecture ater they have completed a minimum o six credit o reshman level mathematics

    and a minimum o nine credits o reshmen level natural sciences. This minimum credit requirement is waived or students who hold theLebanese Baccalaureate in sociology and economics and are seeking admission to architecture i they have completed their Premiere year(oldBaccalaureate Part 1) in Sciences.

    4 Students who hold the Lebanese or French Baccalaureate (literature and humanities or sociology and economics) or a government secondaryschool certifcate, or a certifcate or diploma considered by the University to be equivalent to the Lebanese Baccalaureate, may seek admissionto the frst year in HS provided they take the ollowing additional courses: CHEM 200 and MATH 203 or literature and humanities students;only CHEM 200 or sociology and economics students.
